Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gut disorder. The cause is not known. Symptoms can be quite variable and include abdominal pain, bloating, and sometimes bouts of diarrhoea or constipation. Symptoms tend to 'come and go'. There is no 'cure' for IBS, but symptoms can often be eased.
What is irritable bowel syndrome and who gets it? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition of the gut. It causes pain and other symptoms (listed below). Up to 1 in 5 people in the UK develop IBS at some stage in their life. It can affect anyone at any age, but it commonly first develops in early adult life. Women are affected more often than men. Once it has developed, IBS tends to be a persistent long-term condition. What are the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome?
  • Pain and discomfort may occur in different parts of the abdomen. Pain usually 'comes and goes'. The length of each bout of pain can vary greatly. The pain often eases when you pass stools (motions or faeces) or wind. Many people with IBS describe the pain as a 'spasm' or 'colic'. The severity of the pain can vary from mild to severe, both from person to person, and from time to time in the same person.
  • Bloating and swelling of your abdomen may develop from time to time. You may pass more wind than usual.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome - A Summary
This leaflet gives a brief summary of irritable bowel syndrome. There is another more detailed leaflet on irritable bowel syndrome, and one on fibre in the diet.
What are the features of irritable bowel syndrome? Common symptoms include:
  • Pain in the abdomen which comes on from time to time. The pain often eases when you pass stools (faeces) or wind. The severity of the pain can vary from mild to severe.
  • Bloating and swelling of the abdomen, and passing more wind than usual.
  • Bouts of constipation and/or bouts of diarrhoea. Some people pass mucus too.
  • The stools may become small and pellet like, or watery and ribbony.
  • A feeling of not fully emptying your bowels after going to the toilet.
  • Urgency, which means you have to get to the toilet quickly.
Less common symptoms include: feeling sick, headache, belching, poor appetite, feeling quickly 'full' after eating, heartburn, and bladder symptoms (an associated 'irritable bladder'). Some people have occasional mild symptoms. Others have unpleasant symptoms for long periods. Many people fall somewhere in between, with flare-ups of symptoms from time to time. IBS is common and can affect anyone at any age. The cause of IBS is not known. There is no test that confirms the diagnosis of IBS. A doctor will usually diagnose IBS from the typical symptoms. What are the treatment options for irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome What is it? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a cluster of symptoms, consisting of abdominal discomfort, bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea. Some IBS patients experience alternating diarrhea and constipation. Mucus in and around the stool is commonly noticed. It is helpful to know what IBS is NOT!
  • It is not a cancer and will not cause cancer It is not an anatomic or structural defect It will not cause other gastrointestinal diseases It will not progress to a more serious disorder
IBS in Women IBS is among the most common gastrointestinal disorders for which women seek medical attention. While the disease itself is not inherently different in women than in men, it is much more common among women by a 3 to 1 ratio. The first symptoms of IBS usually begin in teenage years or early adult life. It is rare for IBS to start after the age of 50 years. Symptoms of IBS are often worse during the first few days of the menstrual cycle. Patients with IBS often suffer from depression and may have suffered physical or sexual abuse.

Irritable bowel syndrome
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
August 2003 Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic (long-term) condition affecting the small or large bowel. It causes pain or discomfort and an altered bowel habit. Treatments are available to help with the symptoms, and people can also take an active part in their own treatment, using self-help techniques.
Who is affected by IBS?
IBS is one of the most common disorders of the digestive tract, with about a fifth of people in the UK experiencing occasional symptoms. IBS can develop at any age, but most people experience their first symptoms between the ages of 15 and 40.
The small and large bowel
The symptoms of IBS
Most people's symptoms are so mild that they don't bother to see a doctor about them. However, some people can have symptoms that are more troublesome, especially abdominal cramps, bloating and diarrhoea. People with more severe IBS are usually affected by one symptom more than the others - either pain, constipation or chronic diarrhoea.

It is the commonest condition seen by gastroenterologists and some estimates suggest that as many as one in five of the adult population in the UK suffer from it at any one time.

Irritable bowel syndrome, a condition marked by diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain, is caused by excessive spasms of the large intestine. (It is also known as spastic colon, nervous bowel, irritable colon and mucous colitis.) Irritable bowel syndrome is not considered a disease as such because there are no organic abnormalities or physical changes. In many people, however, stress or feelings of anxiety, guilt or resentment seem to trigger the symptoms, It is probably the most common abdominal complaint brought to the attention of doctors, affecting one-third to one-half of all patients who seek relief from gastrointestinal problems. In addition, many people have irritable bowel syndrome without ever consulting their doctors about it. The condition appears in late adolescence or early adulthood. For unknown reasons, women are affected about twice as often as men. SYMPTOMS
The abdominal discomfort of an irritable bowel ranges from sharp, cramping-like pains to a continuous, dull ache. It is often relieved by a bowel movement. The lower left part of the abdomen may be tender to the touch. This abdominal pain usually appears after eating, although no particular food or type of food can be identified as the cause. There is also usually diarrhea, sometimes alternating with constipation. The diarrhea typically occurs immediately after a meal or when getting up in the morning, and there is often mucus in the stool. In addition, there may be other, less definite symptoms, such as fatigue, anxiety and difficulty in concentrating.
