What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?
You may have heard IBS referred to as "spastic colon" or "spastic bowel." Sometimes IBS is confused with inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis . But IBS is not a disease and does not cause inflammation, bleeding, damage to the bowel, or cancer or other serious diseases. It is called a functional disorder, which means that there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined, but the bowel doesn't work as it should. The cause of IBS is not known, and as yet there is no cure. Often IBS is just a mild annoyance, but for some people it can be disabling. They may be unable to go to social events, to go out to a job, or to travel even short distances. Most people with IBS, however, are able to control their symptoms through diet, stress management, and medicines.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal condition that is diagnosed when a person has any of a variety of abdominal symptoms and/or a change in bowel habits in the absence of detectable organic pathology. It has been called a number of different names including "Spastic Colon." Some individuals with IBS have abnormal sensations in their abdominal organs. It usually occurs in people who are between the ages of 20 and 50. It is seen in both sexes but is more common in women. It can be a chronic condition which tends to come and go over one's lifetime. Although it causes varying degrees of discomfort and inconvenient symptoms, it does not progress to any other diseases or cancer. What causes IBS? IBS may be due to a variety of factors such as stress, diet, or hormones. Studies have shown that people with IBS may have changes in the way their intestinal muscles move food and liquid through the digestive tract. What are the Symptoms?

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is common in the general population and has significant medical and socioeconomic impact. Its pathophysiology is still not clear, and the diagnosis and management are often challenging. It is desirable to make a positive diagnosis rather than to rely on diagnosis of exclusion. A step-by-step approach for management and a realistic goal of therapy is advocated. An effective treatment strategy should address the dominant symptoms, their severity, and psychosocial factors. Rome II Diagnostic Criteria for the Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
DEFINITION IBS is defined on the basis of the recently modified Rome criteria (Rome II criteria) as the presence for at least 12 weeks (not necessarily consecutive) in the preceding 12 months of abdominal discomfort or pain that cannot be explained by a structural or biochemical abnormality and that has at least two of following three features: (1) pain is relieved with defecation, and its onset is associated (2) with a change in the frequency of bowel movements (diarrhea or constipation) or (3) with a change in the form of the stool (loose, watery, or pellet-like).

What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a problem that affects mainly the bowel ,* which is also called the large intestine. The bowel is the part of the digestive system that makes and stores stool. The word syndrome means a group of symptoms. IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms. For example, IBS causes cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. *Linked terms are defined in the glossary. IBS is not a disease. It's a functional disorder, which means that the bowel doesn't work as it should. With IBS, the nerves and muscles in the bowel are extra-sensitive. For example, the muscles may contract too much when you eat. These contractions can cause cramping and diarrhea during or shortly after a meal. Or the nerves can be overly sensitive to the stretching of the bowel (because of gas, for example). Cramping or pain can result.
IBS can be painful. But it does not damage the bowel or cause any other diseases.

What is irritable bowel syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common problem with the intestines. In people with IBS, the intestines squeeze too hard or not hard enough and cause food to move too quickly or too slowly through the intestines. IBS usually begins around age 20 and is more common in women. IBS is also called functional bowel syndrome, irritable colon (the large intestine is also called the colon), spastic bowel and spastic colon. It's not the same as inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis. Return to top

Irritable Bowel Syndrome What is an Irritable Bowel?
Medically, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is known by a variety of other terms: spastic colon, spastic colitis, mucous colitis and nervous or functional bowel. Usually, it is a disorder of the large intestine (colon), although other parts of the intestinal tract even up to the stomach can be affected. The colon, the last five feet of the intestine, serves two functions in the body. First, it dehydrates and stores the stool so that, normally, a well-formed soft stool occurs. Second, it quietly propels the stool from the right side over to the rectum, storing it there until it can be evacuated. This movement occurs by rhythmic contractions of the colon. When IBS occurs, the colon does not contract normally. instead, it seems to contract in a disorganized, at times violent, manner. The contractions may be terribly exaggerated and sustained, lasting for prolonged periods of time. One area of the colon may contract with no regard to another. At other times, there may be little bowel activity at all. These abnormal contractions result in changing bowel patterns with constipation being most common. A second major feature of IBS is abdominal discomfort or pain. This may move around the abdomen rather than remain localized in one area.

An estimated 15-20% of all Americans have Irritable Bowel Syndrome , and it's a devastating (not to mention incurable) condition. If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, you are NOT alone.
Fortunately, Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms (pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating) can be controlled through diet and IBS recipes
More good news - the IBS diet is also beneficial for inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, plus diverticulosis and diverticulitis.
Despite the fact that diet plays a direct role in gut function (which is instinctively obvious to IBS sufferers, who are desperate for a reliable diet as they know this will help them), many doctors fail to give their patients any dietary guidelines for Irritable Bowel Syndrome treatment at all.

What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal disorder that causes:
  • crampy pain
  • gassiness
  • bloating
  • changes in bowel habits
IBS has inaccurately been called by many names:
  • colitis
  • mucous colitis
  • spastic colon
  • spastic bowel
  • functional bowel disease
IBS is called a functional disorder because there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined. Because physicians have been unable to find an organic cause, IBS often has been thought to be caused by emotional conflict or stress. While stress may worsen IBS symptoms, research suggests that other factors also are important. IBS often causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it is not believed to:
  • cause permanent harm to the intestines.

Who's affected?
IBS is the most common gut condition and affects up to one in five people at some time, often between the ages of 25 to 45 years old. Women are more often affected than men. Although the exact cause is unknown, the condition is thought to be caused by a combination of factors including abnormal movements of the intestines and altered sensation of the gut. Some people develop IBS following gut infections and food poisoning. It isn't possible to prevent IBS from developing. However, certain things can trigger attacks for those with IBS and should be avoided. These include stress, eating irregular meals and, in some cases, a lack of dietary fibre.
Symptoms
IBS doesn't develop into bowel cancer IBS doesn't develop into bowel cancer. Abdominal cramps that may be eased by passing wind or passing a motion; bloating and abdominal distension; diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating diarrhoea and constipation; or a feeling of incomplete emptying of the rectum are all common.
