Uveitis
Definition: Uveitis is an inflammation of the the uvea , the layer between the sclera and the retina , which includes the iris ciliary body , and the choroid
Alternative Names: Iritis; Pars planitis; Choroiditis; Chorioretinitis; Anterior uveitis; Posterior uveitis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Uveitis is an inflammation inside the eye, affecting the uvea. The uvea provides most of the blood supply to the retina. Causes of uveitis can include autoimmune disorders, infection, or exposure to toxins. However in many cases, the cause remains unknown. The most common form of uveitis is anterior uveitis, which involves inflammation in the front part of the eye, which is usually isolated to the iris. This condition is often called iritis. The inflammation may be associated with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis , but most cases occur in healthy people and do not indicate an underlying disease. The disorder may affect only one eye and is most common in young and middle-aged people. A history of an autoimmune disease is a risk factor. Pars planitis is inflammation of the pars plana, a narrow area between the iris and the choroid. Pars planitis usually occurs in young men and is not associated with any other disease. It is usually mild.

Fahnden muß man

Uveitis
By Gina White ; reviewed by Dr. Michael DePaolis Uveitis is inflammation of the eye's uvea. The uvea is the eye's middle layer that consists of the iris ciliary body and choroid Uveitis is often classified by which part of the uvea it affects. Anterior uveitis refers to inflammation of the iris alone or the iris and ciliary body; anterior uveitis is the most common form. Intermediate uveitis refers to inflammation of the ciliary body. Posterior uveitis is inflammation of the choroid. Diffuse uveitis is inflammation in all areas of the uvea. Many cases of uveitis are chronic, and they can produce numerous possible complications, including cataracts , lowered or raised intraocular pressure glaucoma retinal problems (such as neovascularization or retinal detachment cystoid macular edema and band keratopathy . These complications can result in vision loss. A study published in the March 2004 issue of Ophthalmology estimated that more than 280,000 people in the United States are affected by uveitis each year, which is almost three times greater than previously thought. The study, based on medical records from six northern California communities, also estimated that uveitis is the reason for 30,000 new cases of blindness a year and up to 10 percent of all the cases of blindness. It is more common in women and more likely to develop with age, according to that study.* (However, a previous study, done on a Minnesota community, showed a higher incidence of uveitis in people aged 25 to 44, rather than in elderly people.)
