Visual Field Test Uveitis is an inflammation inside the eye, affecting the uvea. The uvea provides most of the blood supply to the retina. Causes of uveitis can include autoimmune disorders, infection, or exposure to toxins. However in many cases, the cause remains unknown. The most common form of uveitis is anterior uveitis, which involves inflammation in the front part of the eye, which is usually isolated to the iris. This condition is often called iritis. The inflammation may be associated with

Left untreated, severe iritis can permanently affect vision. Uveitis and iridocyclitis are other terms used to refer to inflammation of this part of the eye. Most people who develop iritis have recurring episodes. Although iritis often occurs for unknown reasons, it can be linked to certain long-term (chronic) diseases that cause inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or other disorders. It may also occur as a result of infection, such as a herpes infection. Iritis is diagnosed with a complete eye exam. Treatment includes medications given as eye drops or by injection next to the eye.

Iritis
Iritis is an inflammatory problem of the iris, the colored part of the eye. The doctor can detect iritis during an examination of the eye with a slit lamp microscope. The doctor will also carefully examine inside the eye to determine if other parts of the eye are involved.
Dislocated lens

DESCRIPTION: Lens dislocation may be partial or complete, and may be hereditary or result from trauma. Vision is blurred if the lens is dislocated out of the line of vision. A quivering iris may be a symptom of lens dislocation, due to the lack of lens attachment and support.
Uveitis

Anterior uveitis (also known as iritis) involves the iris and ciliary body and is the most common type; intermediate uveitis affects the ciliary body, vitreous and retina; posterior uveitis involves the retina, choroid and optic nerve; and diffuse uveitis affects structures both in the front and back of the eye. The symptoms of uveitis depend on whether it is anterior, intermediate, posterior or diffuse.

    What is iritis ?
Iritis It is inflammation of the iris (ie the coloured part of the eye). The symptoms are pain and sensitivity to light. The eye looks cloudy, the iris (coloured part of the eye) bulges and the pupil (black part of eye) contracts. About 40% of people with AS will develop iritis and it is usually sudden and recurrent (ie there are repeated attacks often in the other eye). Each single attack last a few weeks and no more than 2 months. The inflammation is intense and pus may be present within the eye. Iritis occurs in 17 people per 100,000 people per year. However, almost half of all those with iritis carry the HLA B27 gene. Iritis is usually seen in people with ankylosing spondylitis or reactive arthritis.

Uveitis (Iritis)
Uveitis is an inflammation of the the uvea, the layer between the sclera and the retina, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and the choroid.
Structure of Eye The eye is a 3-layered ball, the outer layer is the sclera, a tough coat, the innermost is the retina, the thin light-gathering layer, and the middle layer is the Uvea. The Uvea is made up of the iris, the ciliary body and the choroid. The iris is the colored structure surrounding the pupil, visible in the front of the eye. The ciliary body is a structure containing muscle and is located behind the iris which focuses the lens. The choroid is a layer containing blood vessels that line the back of the eye and is located between the inner visually sensitive layer, called the retina. The uvea provides most of the blood supply to the retina. Inflammation in uveitis may involve any but not necessarily all of these three structures. Depending upon which structures are inflamed, uveitis may be further subcategorized into one of three main diagnoses, these include:
  • Iritis or anterior uveitis
