In the majority of cases there is no specific cause. Occasionally, iritis is just one symptom of a disease that affects other organ systems. These are called connective tissue diseases and include: rheumatoid arthritis , sarcoid , lupus , scleroderma , Behcet's disease , anklylosing spondylitis, Reiter's disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and B-27 disease. Sometimes, it is necessary to establish whether iritis/uveitis is a manifestation of one of these or some other underlying systemic disease. Your eye care provider may ask a detailed medical history, and may order a battery of tests including several possible blood tests, a chest x-ray, x-rays of the lower back, and a skin test for tuberculosis. The symptoms of iritis include light sensitivity, red eye, blurred vision, tearing, pain, and sometimes floaters

Iritis is inflammation predominantly located in the iris of the eye. Inflammation in the iris is more correctly classified as anterior uveitis. the ciliary body can also be inflammed and this would then be called iridocyclitis. When the iris is inflammed, white blood cells (leukocytes) are shed into the anterior chamber of the eye where they can be observed on slit lamp examination floating in the convection currents of the aqueous humor. These cells can be counted and form the basis for rating the degree of inflammation. this is measured on a scale of 1-4, four being one heck of allot of cells (this is further explained in the Glossary of medical terms at http://www.uveitis.org

Iritis Overview
The iris is a circular, pigmented membrane that provides the eye its color and forms the pupil of the eye. The iris is made up of muscular fibers that control the amount of light entering the pupil so that we can see clearly. The iris accomplishes this task by making the pupil smaller in bright light and larger in dim light. In some people, the iris can become inflamed. This is termed iritis. Iritis Causes
Iritis may be a consequence of trauma (traumatic iritis) or nontraumatic causes. In a significant number of cases, no cause for the iritis is found.
  • Blunt trauma to the eye can cause traumatic inflammation of the iris. Nontraumatic iritis is frequently associated with certain diseases, such as ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter syndrome, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis. Infectious causes may include Lyme disease, tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, syphilis, and herpes simplex and herpes zoster viruses.

Iritis
I ritis is the inflammation of the iris, the colored portion of the eye. Iritis, which is often the result of a disease in another part of the body, can be a recurring condition. A fairly common eye problem, iritis usually responds well to treatment. However, the condition may become sight threatening when left untreated. When left untreated iritis can cause a loss of sight.
Iritis, inflammation of the colored portion of the eye,
may cause a red eye or a small pupil. What is the iris?
The iris is a circular muscle near the front of the eye. Besides giving color to the eye, the iris controls the amount of light which enters the eye through the pupil. The iris is located behind the cornea (the clear protective layer of the eye) and just in front of the focusing lens. To see clearly, the proper amount of light must enter the eye. Just as the shutter controls the amount of light which enters a camera, the iris regulates the amount of light which enters the eye. The iris contains two muscles which control the size of the pupil opening. When too much light is present, the muscles cause the pupil to become smaller to reduce excessive light and glare. In dim light or at night, the muscles make the pupil larger to increase the amount of light entering the eye.

Iritis
Overview Iritis is an inflammatory problem of the iris , the colored part of the eye. It often occurs for unknown reasons, but it may be linked to certain diseases affecting the body, infections, previous eye surgery, or injury. Iritis may affect one or both eyes. It is sometimes a chronic, recurring condition.
Signs and Symptoms
  • Red eye Light sensitivity Pain that may range from aching or soreness to intense discomfort Small pupil Tearing

Detection and Diagnosis
The doctor can detect iritis during an examination of the eye with a slit lamp microscope . Among other things, the doctor will look for microscopic white cells floating inside the eye which are a sign of inflammation. The doctor will also carefully examine inside the eye to determine if other parts of the eye are involved.
Treatment
Steroids and anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed to reduce inflammation in the eye. Dilating drops also make the eye more comfortable by relaxing the muscle that constricts the
