Insomnia
Most of us will suffer from insomnia at some time in our lives. If we are upset or anxious about something, or are under stress we may experience difficulties in sleeping. Exams are stressful for many people and so many students find their sleep is disturbed around exam time. Some will also find their sleep patterns are disturbed by work stress. If you are having difficulty sleeping try some of these simple techniques. Expect improvement to be gradual rather than immediate.
  • Do not drink tea, coffee, chocolate drinks or alcohol too close to bedtime. Do not take any naps or extra sleep during the day even if you are tired from the night before. Develop a regular night time routine. Stop work at least an hour before you intend to go to bed and prepare for bed gradually. Try to do something relaxing e.g. have a hot bath, read a novel or magazine, watch a little television before you go to bed. Aim to go to bed at approximately the same time every night. Doing some exercise in the day may help you to sleep.

Memento was good - but in Insomnia director Christopher Nolan comes of age. by Allison Felus At the risk of seeming contrarian, I have to admit I like Christopher Nolan's most recent film Insomnia more than his breakthrough hit Memento . Spare me the hate mail and keep reading. Insomnia is based on a 1997 Norwegian film of the same (translated) name. Nolan sets his movie in Nightmute, a small Alaskan town, where detective Will Dormer (Al Pacino) is summoned to investigate the gruesome murder of a teenage girl. Dormer's already got a lot on his mind when he flies in, and the sleepless nights induced by the midnight Sun only agitate him further. The plot complications that follow are less a question of 'whodunit?', than 'what exactly did he do, why did he do it and what does that say about human nature?'.

Insomnia , a compelling thriller from first- time Scandinavian director Erik Skjoldbjaerg, occurs in a state of perpetual light. The setting is north of the Arctic circle in the middle of summer. At that time and place, we have entered the land of the midnight sun, a strange world where daylight holds court twenty-four hours a day. Yet, even in such bright circumstances, the darkest impulses of the human soul can not always be held at bay. Insomnia starts out like a relatively traditional murder mystery - the kind of thing that might play on any episode of the PBS TV series

'Memento' recognition landed Christopher Nolan in the director's chair for big-budget 'Insomnia' Two years ago Christopher Nolan was in Hollywood trying to get Warner Brothers to hire him as a screenwriter on a remake of a gloomy and unusual 1997 cop vs. killer psychological thriller from Norway called "Insomnia." Warner's owned the rights to the film about a complex murder case in a town north of the Arctic Circle, where the sun doesn't set in the summer, and much to Nolan's disappointment they'd just hired a writer named Hillary Seitz to pen an American version of the film. So Nolan turned his focus to a low-budget noir thriller he'd been writing (from a short story by his brother), a reverse-chronological allegory of revenge and amnesia called

It was the year’s runaway arthouse hit. It brought director Christopher Nolan, whose second film it was, huge acclaim. Insomnia is Nolan’s followup. Clear evidence of the acclaim that Nolan has won can be seen the calibre of the stars he has lining up to work with him here - including three Oscar winners (Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Hilary Swank), not to mention Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney listed on the credits as Executive Producers. And subsequently, of course, Nolan went onto reinvigorate the Batman movie franchise with Batman Begins Insomnia joins a whole stack of recent films - from Three Men and a Baby (1987) through Point of No Return Just Visiting (2001) and Vanilla Sky (2001) - that remake foreign-language films for American audiences seemingly on the bizarre assumption that Americans are too illiterate to be able to read subtitles. The original film in question was the Norweigian thriller

    Review: 'Insomnia' leaves uneasy feeling
Web posted on: Monday, June 29, 1998 4:16:17 PM EDT From Reviewer Paul Tatara (CNN) There's more than a whiff of your basic American cop-and-serial-killer movie to Norwegian writer/director Erik Skjoldbjaerg's debut effort, "Insomnia." However, there's also a major departure from the norm in the screenplay's desperate psychological underpinnings, with star Stellan Skarsgard's coldly-distanced performance as the head detective only amplifying that desperation. Skarsgard's nominal hero is quite a bit less than heroic, and, at times, it's difficult to tell if we should even be concerned with whether or not he catches the killer. For all it's genre-ready trappings, this one is about a cop who has lost touch with the real world. He tries to come to grips with reality again by obsessing over a monster, but the suggestion that he himself is nearly as monstrous as the killer is what keeps him awake. His conscience bothers him because he can't always manage to dredge it up.
    Reviewer: 'Pretty freaked'
Skarsgard plays Detective Jonas Engtrom, an expert who, along with his partner, has been recruited from Sweden to try to catch the brutal killer of a comely young Norwegian high school girl. At first, I thought I was in for something on the order of the hugely crass "Seven," in which easy, grotesque displays of unspeakable violence are supposed to represent twisted-mentality insights on the screenwriter's part. The killing in "Insomnia," which takes place during the opening credits, is shot in raw black-and-white, probably on 8-millimeter film, with a droning synthesizer track underscoring the scene's morbidity.

    Help for Insomnia
    Q:
Lately, I have been having a lot of trouble sleeping. I've tried several over-the-counter medications and am relying more on caffeine during the days to stay awake. What can I do to get more rest?
    A:
    • Set a regular schedule for sleep, with a heavy emphasis on stable bedtime routines.
    • Exercise regularly, but avoid heavy exercise before bedtime.
    • Avoid taking naps.
    • Beginning 30 minutes before bedtime, provide a wind-down period with no TV, loud music or other stimulation.
    • Reserve the bedroom for sleep only.
    • Go to bed when ready to sleep and leave the bedroom if unable to sleep after 30 minutes.
    • Avoid the use of alcohol or over-the-counter sleep medications as sleep inducers.
    • Try not to rely in caffeine to stay awake, especially later in the day.
Often worry keeps us awake. Part of what we have learned recently is that we are not in control of our lives the way we once thought. One way to deal with this is through prayer and meditation, and taking the things we cannot affect and giving them over to God. I can think of few better ways to end the day and improve the likelihood of a better night's sleep.

SAAS the past and the present
SAAS is in the process of changing the way it's working. It started more than 10 years ago as a support service for general practitioners and evolved into service providing telephone consultations and internet support directly to people suffering with sleeping difficulties. Assessments and treatments ranged from the conventional to the non-conventional (albeit with some scientific support). This approach has worked well but a proportion of cases could have been dealt with more effectively had there been stronger medical backup and facilities .
    SAAS the future
In order to improve the service SAAS is now strongly collaborating with the London Sleep Centre . As part of this collaboration Dr C Idzikowski will now be taking face-to-face clinics at the London Sleep Centre. The centre has a multidisciplinary, cross-speciality, comprehensive approach to the treatment of sleep disorders.
