Insomnia
In simple terms the person complaining of insomnia is unsatisfied with the nature of his/her sleep. A person presenting with insomnia complains of
  • Difficulty initiating sleep or
  • Difficulty in maintaining sleep
  • Early morning awakening.
The person may complain of one of the above or all three together. Sleep quality is described as light, restless, unrefreshing. During the day the patient may complain of fatigue, tiredness, and mood swings. Insomnia is a symptom, not a disease. The best way to treat insomnia is to find the cause.
Quantity of Sleep
It is the quality and the perception of the time spent asleep more than the amount of hours which is important in insomnia. Two out of three adults report sleeping between 7-8½ hours per night. However, some people who are "short sleepers" (people who sleep 4-5 hours/night) may not complain of insomnia. On the other hand "long sleepers" (people who sleep 9-10 hours or more) may still complain of insomnia.
Sleep Misconception
This is common. It refers to the feeling of unrefreshing sleep even when the patient appears to have had good quality sleep as recorded during the sleep study. There is no clear explanation for it. It is possible that current sleep recording is unable to detect abnormalities in sleep, which would explain the way the person feels. It has been suggested that it is more common in elderly people who sleep less than in previous years.

Introduction If you answered yes, to any of the above questions, then you may be suffering from some form of sleeplessness, or insomnia. Many of us experience, or have experienced difficulties with sleeping at some time of our lives. Some of the more common scenarios which apply to us includes unable to sleep because of
  • jet lag those who work day and night shifts drinking coffee late at night
I suffered from insomnia during my exams at school and at university. A combination of coffee, anxiety, and stress ensured that I woke up the next morning feeling as bad as the night before. These are situations which a lot of us can relate to. For some, the problem may disappear after a few days (transient insomnia), but for others, this can continue for many weeks, months, and even years (chronic insomnia).

Insomnia
This is Christopher Nolan's second widely known directorial accomplishment-he actually made three movies and his very first one was more of a personal test of potentiality, as probably is the case with every director. Memento was a masterpiece, having a unique way of storytelling. When I first heard about Insomnia, I thought it might be similar in the making. It wasn't the case. Not entirely. Detective Will Dormer (Al Pacino) and his partner are sent to a far, cold town in the state of Alaska to investigate the murder of a local teen. While on the hunt for the murderer, he accidentally shoots his friend dead. Instead of confessing, the-spur-of-the-moment situation pushes him toward a different path; blame the killer for the cop's death. Between the risk of being caught and the messy and insomniac week, the detective battles his own demons arising from his emotional complexity and guilt. Toward the end we learn of a torment he was carrying all this time, which is the likely cause of his desensitized decision-making. This movie made me sleepy. Not because it was boring or anything, but because Al Pacino played the role of the insomniac guy, who cannot friggin' sleep for a whole week, very well. By the end of the movie, he was weak. He had black bags hanging under his eyes and he could not walk or see right. He barely functioned. Why? It is his subconscious being a bitch after he hid the truth from his partners. Not to mention the long and exhausting flight. Good job, though.

Starring: Al Pacino Robin Williams Hilary Swank , Maura Tierney, Martin Donovan Inspector Will Dormer ( Al Pacino ) suggests going to the local school to interview one of the pupils when someone points out that it's 10.30 at night. Dormer peers through the sunlit window. "When does it get dark around here?" he asks. "It doesn't." Although the summer sun never sets on Nightmute, Alaska - the Halibut fishing capital of the world - things are about to get very dark for the veteran LAPD detective.
Director Christopher Nolan, who played with time so originally in Memento , uses Insomnia 's permanent daylight to equally unsettling effect in this taut thriller. Pacino gives his best performance in some time as the irascible Dormer who, along with his partner Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan), has been sent to Nightmute to investigate the brutal murder of a young girl. The assignment isn't simply to assist the local police, including the eager rookie Ellie Burr ( Hilary Swank ), but also provides the two feuding detectives with some respite from the publicity surrounding their involvement in an internal investigation. Dormer would soon wish he had remained in LA as events and lack of sleep take their toll, driving the increasingly cranky detective to the verge of a breakdown.

CURE INSOMNIA
20 WAYS TO WAKE-UP ALERT, RESTED AND REFRESHED Thomas Yarnell, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist
Marilyn tossed and turned as the hour hand moved silently to the next number. Two hours had gone by and she was no closer to falling asleep then she was when she first lay down. Marilyn is not alone. Twenty-five percent of all adults have one form of insomnia or another. You do not have to be one of them. Here are 20 things you can do to sleep well, wake rested, and be alert all day.
There are many causes of insomnia. Stress and depression are two causes that head the list. In Marilyn's case it was stress. When she laid down to go to sleep, her mind started racing. She was thinking about everything that she had to do the next day.
Insomnia generally comes in one of three varieties:
* Type 1 is where you have difficulty falling asleep when you go to bed. This is what Marilyn was experiencing.
* Type 2 is where you fall asleep easily but wake up to early.
* Type 3 is a blend. You may fall asleep easily or with difficulty and then wake up frequently during the night.
The end result is that you receive far less healthy sleep than your body requires. Being deprived of sleep interferes with your ability to think clearly, process information and find solutions for the problems that confront all of us on a daily basis.

Programs Available Insomnia can be a primary sleep problem or secondary to a mental condition or related to a medical illness or substance abuse. Studies estimate that 10% to 15% of the adult population have chronic sleep problem and an additional 25% to 35% of the population have transient or occasional sleep difficulties. Certain individuals are vulnerable for example the elderly whose sleep is more fragmented and teenagers who sometimes have difficulty falling asleep until late at night and awaking early in the morning. Shift workers and those who travel frequently are also at increased risk for insomnia. CAUSES
Sleep can be affected by numerous factors and six groups of etiologies have been proposed for sleep difficulties. Physical or medical disorders for example conditions causing pain, itch, cough, breathlessness etc. can disrupt sleep. Substances such as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol also impair sleep. Circadian rhythm problem such as shift work and jet lag; psychological factors and psychiatric disorder such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. Lifestyle issues, poor sleep habits and environmental factors such as noise, light and temperature also interrupt sleep.

During sleep, we usually pass through five phases of sleep: stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. These stages progress in a cycle from stage 1 to REM sleep, then the cycle starts over again with stage 1. We spend almost 50 percent of our total sleep time in stage 2 sleep, about 20 percent in REM sleep, and the remaining 30 percent in the other stages. Infants, by contrast, spend about half of their sleep time in REM sleep. For more, read the Sleep article.

No one knows how much sleep you really need. It varies from person to person. The amount you need to be at your best is as individual as the amount of food you need. How many hours you log is irrelevant. What's right for you is whatever makes you feel good, productive or creative next day. Anything between six and ten hours is normal for adults, but lots of people manage on less. Einstein needed ten. Napoleon, Freud and Churchill all got by on just a few hours. Bill Clinton averages five or six. Jay Leno and Maggie Thatcher are around the four/five mark. Most adolescents need nine. At any given time, about one in every three people is suffering from insomnia. In the Western World it's responsible for skyrocketing sales of various prescriptions remedies in general and sleeping pills in particular. In the UK in 1992, (the last year for which figures are available) doctors wrote 12 million prescriptions for sleeping pills. Americans spend $2.4 billion a year on prescription remedies while sales of melatonin and other non-prescription remedies top hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

In a hypnotic state, the body and conscious mind are deeply relaxed while the subconscious mind remains fully aware and receptive to suggestions. As we develop, many of us acquire unwanted and unhealthy habits such as smoking or overeating. These behaviors occur as a response to certain stresses, and the key to changing these habits lies in the subconscious mind. Clinical hypnosis directly accesses the subconscious mind and enables us to rid ourselves of these unwanted and harmful behaviors. Clinical hypnosis has been recognized as an important treatment tool by the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association for over 40 years.
