After making one of the most unconventional thrillers in motion picture history (MEMENTO), Nolan decided to remake the quite unusual 1997 Norwegian film INSOMNIA, which starred Stellan Skarsgård. The irony is that Nolan's version is a completely conventional, big budget Hollywood thriller filled with star power, including Oscar winners Al Pacino (SCENT OF A WOMAN), Hilary Swank (BOYS DON'T CRY) and Robin Williams (GOOD WILL HUNTING). I expected Nolan to magnify the original's unconventional aspects, not to diminish them. Don't get me wrong, the result is solid entertainment from start to finish, but it is certainly nothing worth putting on best of the year lists as MEMENTO definitely was. (MEMENTO was my top pick last year.)

INSOMNIA
Eric Skjoldbjaerg (1997)
Personified so fittingly by lead actor Stellan Skarsgard , Swedish police investigator, Jonas Engstrom is the pivoting character from whom the psychological effects of killing emanate unto a world of Insomnia . Solicited by the Norwegian police, who expect him to unveil the mystery behind the murder of a young schoolgirl, Jonas' renowned genius in crime-solving seems to degenerate after commiting a fatal error which costs him the life of his partner, Erik Vik ( Sverre Anker Ousdal ). This sudden confrontation with death, added to the anguish of a paranoia let loose, leaves the character with just enough sagacity that may earn him his ticket back home. Norwegian director Eric Skjoldbjaerg plays with the notion of a new "film blanc " (as opposed to film noir), as he defines a new style in terms of the use of excess light (as opposed to the low-key lighting characteristic of the urban American, post WWII genre). Insomnia is rich in visual metaphoric expression that seems to exteriorize the main character's interior sense of loneliness. Written by

Insomnia a Locarno 2002
Mentire è facile come uccidere, come inventare prove, creare indizi.
Ottimo.

InnerSelf Magazine (enter email here) Sample Issue Discovering Nutritional Therapy by Patricia Quinn Nutritional therapy is a system of healing based on the belief that food, as nature intended, provides the medicine we need to obtain and maintain a state of health: our food is our medicine and our medicine is our food. Although some health problems require specific medication, many conditions can be relieved effectively with nutritional therapy. These include disorders ranging from chronic fatigue, energy loss, insomnia and depression, to backache, skin complaints, asthma, and headaches. Nutritional therapy will also benefit you if you have no specific illness, but want to maintain a state of optimum health. It is safe for babies and children as well as adults, and the change of eating patterns that is typically prescribed usually has far fewer side effects than synthetic medicines.

There are four major types of Insomnia.
  • Difficulty falling asleep
No problem falling asleep but difficulty staying asleep (many awakenings)
Waking up too early Sleep State Misperception
How much sleep does a person need? Enough to feel alert during the day . Typically 7 to 9 hours (varies from person to person) of good quality sleep.
What can cause Insomnia?
Many things can cause insomnia. Insomnia is not a disorder it is a complaint. The goal is to find the underlying problem causing the complaint. Almost any sleep disorder can present themselves as insomnia including circadian disorders, sleep apnea, restless legs, and the list goes on. So ruling out a sleep disorder can be important. Medications, herbs and caffeine can cause insomnia. Most medications will report the possible side effect of insomnia and sleepiness. The same medication can cause both since we all react to medications differently. Life events can cause insomnia but it is usually temporary.

What is insomnia?
Do you often have trouble getting to sleep at night or find yourself waking up frequently and feeling exhausted in the morning? Typical symptoms of insomnia include a difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night or early morning, and not feeling refreshed from sleep. Because individuals require different amounts of sleep, insomnia is not defined by the number of hours of sleep a person gets or by how quickly they fall asleep, but by the quality of sleep achieved. Insomnia results in daytime tiredness, a lack of energy, an inability to concentrate, and irritability. Different types of insomnia include transient or short-term insomnia, intermittent insomnia and chronic or constant insomnia. Many people experience transient or intermittent insomnia at some point during their lives.

Dr Rob Hicks Insomnia is difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep. Symptoms may include difficulty dropping off, and waking during the night and not being able to get back to sleep.
In this article
Who's affected? What's the best way to drop off? Further help
Who's affected?
Everyone has difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep at some time in their life but this is usually short-lived. However, an estimated one in ten people suffer insomnia on a regular basis or over a long period of time, called chronic insomnia. Insomnia is more common in older adults and those with lots of stress. Sleeping difficulties are most commonly caused by stress and worry. Other common causes include physical illness that causes pain; environmental noise; caffeine, alcohol and medication side effects; depression and shift-work. Insomnia contributes to excessive daytime tiredness, which in turn may be responsible for accidents, recurrent infections, poor concentration, irritability, work and relationship problems and a general inability to cope.
