Secondary Infertility
Infertility affects approximately 15% of the population and secondary infertility approximately 5%. It has also been suggested that it takes 25% of the population longer than they would like to achieve their desired family size. Secondary infertility can be defined as infertility in a couple who have already had at least one pregnancy between them, whether that be a pregnancy resulting in the birth of a baby or a pregnancy that has miscarried, resulting in an ectopic pregnancy or lead to a termination of pregnancy for what ever reason.
Infertility is recognized as a significant illness with a significant impact on the wellbeing of men and women. Secondary infertility is just as important a condition even if the couple have between them a healthy child or children.
Clinics who look after couples with infertility recognize the need for a couple to have not only one child but the family size that they wish. Thus secondary infertility is just as important a condition. The issue of rationing of course always comes into health services and this is why those few health authorities that do fund infertility treatment will usually only fund a couple to have their first child and will not fund treatment of infertility for couples who already have children. Those of us who work in the field of infertility feel that this is wrong and that because fertility treatment is both successful and cost effective treatment should be provided on the health service to all those who wish it.

Overview You and your partner have tried for months, perhaps for even more than a year. But despite sexual intercourse without birth control, you've been unable to conceive a child. If you've been trying to conceive for more than a year, there's a good chance that something may be interfering with your efforts to have a child. Infertility, also known as subfertility, is the inability to conceive a child within one year. Infertility may be due to a single cause in either you or your partner, or a combination of factors that may prevent a pregnancy from occurring or continuing. Infertility differs from sterility. Being sterile means you're unable to conceive a child. With sterility, you or your partner has a physical problem that precludes the ability to conceive. A diagnosis of infertility simply means that becoming pregnant may be a challenge rather than an impossibility.

More men are having children later Infertility may be becoming more of a man's than a woman's problem, new figures suggest.
Until now, both were level pegging - 40% of cases linked to men, 40% to women and 20% to joint problems. However, the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology found rates of an IVF treatment typically used to help male infertility have risen. It said a number of factors including declining sperm quality due to environmental toxins may be involved. A male problem Use of ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection), in which a single sperm is injected into the egg to fertilise it, made up only 43% of IVF cycles in 1997, but accounted for 52% of cycles in 2002. BBC News health reporter in Copenhagen
Infertility rates 'could threaten Europe's population' Infertility is set to double in Europe over the next decade, a leading UK fertility expert has warned.
One in seven couples now has trouble conceiving naturally, but Professor Bill Ledger from Sheffield University warned this could rise to one in three. He told a European fertility conference that women should be offered career breaks so they could have children younger, when they are more fertile. Obesity and sex infections were also increasing infertility, he said. The incidence of chlamydia, a sexually transmitted infection which carries a risk of infertility, has doubled over the last decade - and 6% of girls under the age of 19 are currently classed as obese. A potential rise in male infertility could also affect couples, Professor Ledger said. Both the quality and quantity of sperm appeared to be in decline.

A Mind/Body Approach to Help Women
Cope with Infertility and Enhance Fertility
Are you currently experiencing any of the following problems? Trouble sleeping (difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up in the wee hours); increased or decreased appetite; neck or shoulder pain; headaches, stomach aches or pains; anxiety; tearfulness; frustration; anger; isolation; or confusion. While not unusual, these symptoms may be creating less than optimal conditions for conception.
    Our Mind/Body Program
The Behavioral Management Infertility Program brings training received in Boston, Massachusetts to conduct "The Mind/Body Program for Infertility" developed by Dr. Alice Domar to the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. Individuals who have gone through the Dr. Domar's infertility program have consistently reported significant improvements in depression, anxiety, anger, confusion and fatigue following completion of the program. Approximately 44% of the participants conceive within six months of completing her program. The relationship between participation in the program and subsequent conception and pregnancy is not fully understood. Research has shown that women who experience infertility have increased levels of depression, anxiety, frustration, isolation, and anger. Although some scientists believe that these negative emotions may prevent conception, it seems more likely that these feelings are the result, not the cause, of infertility. In either case, a reduction of stress and tension clearly is beneficial.

The growths are commonly referred to as "endometrial implants." Endometriosis affects 10% to 15% of women and is a chronic, sometimes painful condition that can lead to infertility. Causes of endometriosis are unknown. Diagnosis of endometriosis usually involves a laparoscopy , a complete medical history, a physical examination, and other tests. Treatment typically involves medication and/or surgery. Endometrial implants typically inset in other parts of the reproductive tract, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the inside lining of the abdominal cavity, and the outside surfaces of the uterus or intestines. They can also occur in other parts of the body, including the liver, legs, lungs, and rarely, the brain. The implants are not malignant (cancerous), but the disease may be progressive and
