What are infertility tests?
Infertility tests are done to help determine why a couple cannot become pregnant. The tests help determine whether the problem lies with the man's reproductive system, the woman's, or both. A variety of tests can be used, including physical examination, semen analysis, blood tests, and special procedures.

The death rate is about 1 per 2000 ectopics in this country. About 40-50 women die each year from ectopic pregnancy in the U.S. There has been a large drop in the death/ectopic rate since 1970. In other words, it is much safer to have an ectopic than it was in 1970.

Female circumcision could lead to infertility
First clinical study shows harmful effects of practice used in 30 countries
LONDON - Female circumcision, which is practiced in more than 30 countries and affects 2 million girls each year, could cause infertility. Swedish researchers, who examined nearly 300 women in Sudan where the practice is widespread, said on Friday women who had undergone circumcision, or female genital mutilation, were five to six times more likely to be infertile. "All sorts of female circumcision, not only the severe forms, probably cause an increased risk of infertility. This is a very important argument to be used in areas where this is practiced," Dr. Lars Almroth, a pediatrician and researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, said in an interview. Despite efforts to stop what human rights campaigners have described as an atrocity against women, female circumcision is practiced in Africa and is common in some countries in the Middle East. It involves the removal of part or all of the female genitalia. An estimated 135 million women and girls have been circumcised, according to the human rights group Amnesty International.

Search Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR), including the UNDP/UNFPA/WHO/World Bank Special Programme on Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP) Infertility Infertility ART current practices and controversies For millions of couples around the world, the inability to have children is a personal tragedy . For a significant proportion of them, the private agony is compounded by a social stigma, which can have serious and far-reaching consequences. It is not surprising therefore that the demand for assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is growing in all regions. Progress in reproductive health newsletter - issue No. 63 Assisted reproductive technology (ART) The last quarter of the 20 th century has witnessed several major advances in reproductive medicine. One of the most widely publicised, celebrated and, at the time, controversial medical landmarks in this area is the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) to manage infertility. Infertility affects more than 80 million people worldwide. In general, one in ten couples experiences primary or secondary infertility, but most of those who suffer from infertility live in developing countries where infertility services in general, and ART in particular, are not available. The use of ART to manage infertility is a contested issue in the context of the cause of the problem, the attitude to overpopulation, and the availability of scarce health resources in developing countries.

116. Jones Institute: Clomid - Ovulation Induction With Clomid
Overview of the ways in which clomiphene is used as a first line treatment for infertility in some women.
http://www.jonesinstitute.org/clomid_treatment.html
Clomid
Clomid (clomiphene citrate) was first synthesized in 1956 and introduced for clinical trials in 1960. Since then, Clomid has been widely used as a "first line" treatment to induce and regulate ovulation. Clomid is typically administered on either days 3-7 or days 5-9 of the menstrual cycle with "day one" defined as the first day of normal menstrual flow. Clomid works at the hypothalamus, a small gland at the base of the brain. Clomid stimulates the production of gonadotropin releasing hormone which stimulates the pituitary gland to produce follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH stimulates the development of the ovarian follicles which contain the eggs. Clomid is taken orally and should be taken at the same time each day. The "fertile time", or the time of ovulation, usually occurs 5-8 days after the last Clomid tablet is taken. Sometimes Clomid is given to stimulate ovulation for intrauterine insemination, usually in combination with FSH It is up to the physician to determine how Clomid cycles should be monitored. Early in treatment, it is common for patients to take clomiphene for 5 days each month and return for a follow-up examination after 3 months of therapy if they do not become pregnant. Sometimes, the physician may wish to monitor the cycles more closely. A combination of ovulation predictor kits and/or ultrasounds may be used to determine the number of follicles present, their rate of growth, and to help pinpoint the time of ovulation.
