Premature menopause (PMM)
Premature ovarian failure
The word menopause refers to the last menstrual bleed. The term premature menopause (premature ovarian failure) is defined as the occurrence of menopause before the age 40. Menopause does not usually occur until a woman has reached her late forties or early fifties. Premature ovarian failure can present at varying ages and in many forms. If the condition presents after puberty, the woman will suffer from amenorrhoea and infertility. The diagnosis of premature menopause can be a shattering experience to the women and her family.

We try to keep it as up to date as possible including the current news section scrolling on this page now. Infertility Network UK (I N UK) has worked hard on raising awareness of infertility and particularly on the inequality of NHS funding for treatment. Do you have problems getting NHS funding for your treatment? Is your PCT moving towards funding treatment following the publication of NICE guidelines for fertility treatment? Do you want to do something to help yourself and others get NHS funding? Can we help? Next IN THE NAME OF ALLAH MOST GRACIOUS MOST MERCIFUL As salaamu alaikum/Greetings Welcome to our homepage about Infertility and Islam. We hope that you find it beneficial and informative. In many Muslim communities it is often considered a taboo to discuss the topic of infertility openly. Although 1 in 12 couples face infertility problems when trying to conceive a child. And while in many cultures the woman is blamed and shunned by the community, we inshallah would like to shed some light on the situation, in hopes that women will no longer feel ashamed in such an ordeal. It is hard enough for a woman who has difficulty conceiving, having a natural desire to feel a child grow in her womb, to have to deal with cultural ignorances as well. (For the non muslims who have ventured onto our site, please read our brief introduction to What is Islam Every month a couple has basically 1 in 4 chance of conceiving where no infertility factors exist. In a womans' lifetime she will normally produce 4 to 5 thousand eggs. Eight of these eggs are recruited each month, and only one is brought to maturity and relased into the fallopian tube, the other seven eggs deteriorate and die. The egg only lives from 24-36 hours after it is released and if it is not fertilized by the sperm (which can live up to 72 hours inside a woman) the egg will then deteriorate and die. Within two weeks the uterine lining will shed and a woman will have a menstrual cycle.

Infertility Facts and Statistics
Infertility, which affects as many as 1 in 6 couples, is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive a child after one year of unprotected sex and is usually diagnosed through medical interviews and physical examinations of both partners. Infertility can be caused by a wide variety of factors. One-third of the time the problem lies with the male, one-third of the time it lies with the female, and one-third of the time infertility is caused by problems with both the male and the female. Sometimes either the sperm or the egg are unhealthy or there is some sort of mechanical obstruction keeping the sperm from fertilizing the egg. Once an egg is fertilized it must be able to become implanted in the uterus and then the embryo must be healthy and have the proper hormonal environment in which to develop properly. Metabolic imbalances, stress, increasing age, smoking, alcohol, exposure to toxic chemicals and drugs, and

(an-drol'-uh-jee) The science of diseases of the male sex,

- Blakiston's Medical Dictionary
( andro- a combining form meaning "male", "male part or organ". Also, andr- [ < Gk andr- ] ) Ask any ten year old school kid with an average GK (general knowledge) who a gynecologist is or what gynecology is, and pat will often come the right answer. For some obscure reason, the Greek root 'gynaik', which means 'woman', seems to be very well known to many. Yet 'andrology', with its exactly identical and obvious Greek roots, is something that even most doctors haven't heard of. What's worse is that many respectable dictionaries don't mention it either. This is despite Google and Yahoo yielding more than 200, 000 links when one enters 'andrology' as the search term. Confusing the issue further is the fact that, except in a few countries, andrology remains a sub-specialty area within urology. This is probably because, unlike in the female, the same organ (penis) is used for both urination and copulation in the male, and hence the territorial encompassment - and confusion. It is quite obvious therefore, that there's a lot of confusion here and that this nomenclature needs to be reviewed.
