I like that spicy food meant a bay leaf and a tin of pimientos. I like that fat was used with complete abandon. Indigestion
Definition
Indigestion, which is sometimes called dyspepsia , is a general term covering a group of nonspecific symptoms in the digestive tract. It is often described as a feeling of fullness, bloating, nausea, heartburn , or gassy discomfort in the chest or abdomen. The symptoms develop during meals or shortly afterward. In most cases, indigestion is a minor problem that often clears up without professional treatment. Description
Indigestion or dyspepsia is a widespread condition, estimated to occur in 25% of the adult population of the United States. Most people with indigestion do not feel sick enough to see a doctor; nonetheless, it is a common reason for office visits. About 3% of visits to primary care doctors are for indigestion.
Physical causes
The symptoms associated with indigestion have a variety of possible physical causes, ranging from commonplace food items to serious systemic disorders:
  • Diet. Milk, milk products, alcoholic beverages, tea, and coffee cause indigestion in some people because they stimulate the stomach's production of acid. Medications. Certain prescription drugs as well as over-the- counter medications can irritate the stomach lining. These medications include

Indigestion, also known as upset stomach or dyspepsia, is discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen, often accompanied by nausea, abdominal bloating, belching, and sometimes vomiting. Some people also use the term indigestion to describe the symptom of heartburn Indigestion might be caused by a disease in the digestive tract such as ulcer or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), but for many people, it results from eating too much, eating too quickly, eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, using medications that irritate the stomach lining, being tired, and having ongoing stress can also cause indigestion or make it worse. To diagnose indigestion, the doctor might perform tests for problems, like ulcers. In the process of diagnosis, a person may have x rays of the stomach and small intestine or undergo endoscopy, in which the doctor uses an instrument to look at the inside of the stomach. Avoiding the foods and situations that seem to cause indigestion in some cases is the most successful way to treat it. Heartburn caused by acid reflux is usually improved by treatment with antacids, H2-blockers, or proton pump inhibitors. Smokers can help relieve their indigestion by quitting smoking, or at least not smoking right before eating. Exercising with a full stomach may cause indigestion, so scheduling exercise before a meal or at least an hour afterward might help.

Why it happens
Many women start getting heartburn or acid indigestion in the second half of their pregnancy. The burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of your breastbone to your lower throat usually comes and goes until your baby is born. Heartburn is caused by both hormonal and physical changes in your body. During pregnancy, your placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. Progesterone also relaxes the valve that separates your esophagus from your stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that uncomfortable sensation of heartburn. The hormone also slows the wavelike contractions of your stomach, making digestion sluggish. In later pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, slowing the elimination of waste from your body and pushing stomach acids into your esophagus.

by Louise Davies Indigestion is a feeling of discomfort or pain within the lower chest or abdomen caused by gastric acid irritation within the upper part of the gut namely the oesophagus, stomach or duodenum. For other causes of abdominal pain see - "indigestion" . but the usual types of indigestion are:- Heart burn . A burning feeling in the center of the chest, sometimes combined with an acid taste in the back of the mouth. Usually made worse by eating a large meal, straining or leaning forward. This is caused by acid from the stomach refluxing back into the gullet. Classic indigestion comes on shortly after food and is a described as an intermittent burning discomfort in the top of the abdomen. Often helped temporarily by antacid medication (white medicine). Caused by irritation of the stomach wall (gastritis or an ulcer). If discomfort starts on an empty stomach (or starts in the middle of the night) it is more likely because of an ulcer or irritation of the section of gut which immediately follows the stomach called the duodenum. General points to remember:
  • Avoid tight fitting clothing (especially underwear, skirts or trousers)

Heartburn and Indigestion Heartburn and Indigestion
Many women have heartburn for the first time during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Although this is not usually a sign of a serious problem, it can be uncomfortable or painful. Gastroesophageal reflux is often called “acid reflux” or "heartburn.” But this condition has nothing to do with the heart! Causes of Heartburn and Indigestion During Pregnancy
Heartburn occurs when digested food from your stomach, which contains acid, is pushed up toward your esophagus. This causes a burning sensation behind your breastbone or a burning sensation that starts in your stomach and seems to rise up. You may also have a sour taste in your mouth or a feeling that vomit is rising in your throat. Normally, food moves down a pipe (called the esophagus) between your mouth and your stomach. When you’re not eating, a circular valve around the bottom of your esophagus closes off the connection between your esophagus and your stomach. This valve keeps the acids in your stomach from rising up. When you swallow, the valve relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow through. If the valve relaxes when you’re not eating, the acids from your stomach can flow back up into your esophagus, irritating it and causing a burning sensation.

Indigestion is a general term used to describe discomfort in the upper abdomen. It's not a disease, but rather a collection of symptoms. You may notice a burning sensation in your upper abdomen, nausea, bloating and belching. Causes are varied If you eat too much of any food, you can wind up with an upset stomach, particularly if you overindulge in fatty or spicy foods. Eating too quickly has the same effect. Alcohol and stress can also take a toll. Persistent indigestion may point to other digestive conditions:
    • Heartburn.
