Clinical investigations in female urinary incontinence
By Hogne Sandvik
Female urinary incontinence (UI) is a condition with severe economic and psychosocial impact . I have studied the epidemiology of UI in the general female population and the prevailing management of UI by Norwegian general practitioners (GPs). Those who are interested in more details, may take a look at this synopsis . The main conclusions that may be drawn from these studies are that UI is very prevalent among adult women, mostly in the form of stress incontinence. At least 6% may be regarded as potential patients. Although complicated by methodological difficulties, studies of GPs' management indicate that available therapeutic tools are not used to their full potential. A literature review demonstrates that the history is the most important diagnostic tool in general practice, and that the value of clinical investigations (described below) is poorly documented.
Gynaecological examination
Review papers and guidelines agree that a gynaecological examination should be included in the basic evaluation of incontinent women.(1-6) Accordingly, all authors who have actually evaluated management programmes for UI have included a gynaecological examination in their programme.(7-10) However, in a British survey only 25% of incontinent women reported that their GP had actually done a gynaecological examination.(11)

While it may be fairly common for number of the elderly, it usually can be kept under control through medications, exercise or surgery. However, those with Alzheimers tend to have functional incontinence: difficulty finding the bathroom on time, or remembering what to do there, inattentiveness to body signals, and reduced concerned about social appropriateness. It can cause skin breakdown and urinary tract infections. It is expensive and burden some, and can lead to social isolation, increased dependency and finally, placement in a care home. Incontinence should be medically evaluated. Many conditions can contribute to incontinence: Diabetes, stroke, infections, constipation, prostate problems, or medications such as tranquilizers, sedatives and diuretics. The patient may be referred to a urologist. Observe patterns of voiding, when accidents occur, and the time needed to get to the toilet in use it. Urinary Incontinence in Children
In the United States, at least 13 million people have problems holding urine until they can get to a toilet. This loss of urinary control is called "urinary incontinence" or just "incontinence." Although it affects many young people, it usually disappears naturally over time, which suggests that incontinence, for some people, may be a normal part of growing up. No matter when it happens or how often it happens, incontinence causes great distress. It may get in the way of a good night's sleep and is embarrassing when it happens during the day. That's why it is important to understand that occasional incontinence is a normal part of growing up and that treatment is available for most children who have difficulty controlling their bladders. Incontinence

Incontinence effects millions of people every day. While many adults still "whisper" the word, incontinent products and adult diapers fill a complete aisle in drug and department stores everywhere. Logic would dictate that in our profit driven society, there must be millions of customers for these products. Doctors claim 15 million in the United States alone. We suspect that figure is quite conservative. The IRC provides an opportunity for incontinent adults to hear from others who have traveled the same road. Undergone the same tests. Worn the same diapers. Had the same embarrassing accidents. The sharing of ideas and experiences is what the IRC is all about. Incontinence should not be debilitating. It is merely an inconvenience and modern technology has given us many tools, which allow us to control our problem and go on with our every day lives. Through our articles, product and adult diaper reviews, forum, IRC chat links and manufacturer links, we hope to assist incontinent people in finding the right products for themselves. We will provide the information necessary to allow a person to live with incontinence rather than be controlled by it.

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) Germany has only a small amount of its own natural oil reserves, but an enterprising power plant chief believes it has found an alternative source of energy with a bright future in an aging nation used incontinence pads. "It's an environmentally friendly source of energy," said Thomas Lesche, director of a Bremen incinerator plant that has signed a pioneering deal with a local retirement home to buy up 100 tons of used pads and soiled tissues each year. "The pollution emissions with used pads are far lower than with oil or coal," added Lesche, who said he did not know of any other plant in Europe that turns incontinence pads into energy. "The content of nappies provide a great source of energy. The demand for used incontinence materials will grow in the future." Lesche said the used pads may not be quite as good a source of energy as conventional fossil fuels such as oil, but he added they were nearly as efficient a source of energy as lignite, a softer coal with a higher water content.

Bladder Problems and Urinary Incontinence
Over 35 million Americans suffer from bladder problems, and yet few people realize just how widespread these problems are. The term "bladder problems" covers a wide range of disorders, some of which cause pain, urinary incontinence or other complications that affect quality of life. Patients suffering from urinary incontinence often have difficulty discussing their symptoms with their doctor. That's the reason for this section: to provide an overview of the various types of bladder disorders for sufferers and their families. The articles provided here should not replace professional diagnosis and care. They do, however, provide a well-rounded description of various bladder problems that may further your understanding of the disease or disorder. Your doctor should be your primary source of information about the causes and treatment of any bladder problem. Armed with the information provided here you will be better able to discuss your symptoms with your doctor. This section is divided into multiple articles, covering topics such as
