Incontinence
Overview Treatment Definition:
Incontinence is the inability to control urination (passage of urine). Urinary incontinence can range from an occasional leakage of urine, to a complete inability to hold any urine. See also bowel incontinence
Alternative Names: Loss of bladder control; Uncontrollable urination; Urination - uncontrollable
Considerations: Incontinence is fairly rare in children. Infants and children up to the time of toilet training are not considered incontinent, but merely untrained. Occasional accidents in children up to age 6 years, especially with urine, are not unusual. Nighttime incontinence is usually referred to as bedwetting or nocturnal enuresis in children, and is normal until the age of 6 years. In young girls, and occasionally adolescent females, slight leakage of urine may be associated with laughing.
Incontinence in children may be associated with urinary tract infections , spinal injuries, urinary tract anatomical abnormalities, and neurological abnormalities that result in abnormal bladder control.

Urinary Incontinence
What is urinary incontinence (UI)?
Urinary incontinence (UI) is the loss of urine control, or the inability to hold your urine until you can reach a restroom. More than 13 million people in the United States experience incontinence male and female (women are twice as likely to develop UI than men), young and old. Urinary incontinence may be a temporary condition, resulting from an underlying medical condition. It can range from the discomfort of slight losses of urine to severe, frequent wetting. What causes UI?
Incontinence is not an inevitable result of aging. Sometimes it is the first and only symptom of a urinary tract infection. It is caused by specific changes in body function that often result from diseases or use of medications, and may be brought on by any illness such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer. What are the different types of urinary incontinence?

Urinary Incontinence General Information
General Information Facts About Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine from the bladder. It affects an estimated 25 million or more Americans of all ages and economic levels. The great myth about urinary incontinence is that it is a natural part of growing older. There is nothing natural about incontinence. One in five older men suffer with incontinence and half of all women experience incontinence at some point in their lives. However, it is not a necessary consequence of having had children. Urinary incontinence is not a disease, but rather a symptom of an underlying condition. continue discovery Types of Incontinence Stress Incontinence is the symptom of loss of urine when pressure within the abdomen increases. Stress incontinence is usually described as the involuntary loss of urine while coughing, sneezing, laughing, or lifting heavy objects. Poor bladder support by the pelvic muscles results in the opening and descent of the urethra when abdominal pressure is increased.

The urinary tract or system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The key players in the system are the kidneys, a pair of purplish-brown organs located below the ribs toward the middle of the back. The kidneys remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine, keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood, and produce a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells. Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, a triangle-shaped chamber in the lower abdomen. Urine is stored in the bladder and emptied through the urethra. The average adult passes about a quart and a half of urine each day. The amount of urine varies, depending on the fluids and foods a person consumes. The volume formed at night is about half that formed in the daytime. For more, read the Urinary Tract Infection in Adults article.

incontinence affects an estimated 15 to 19 million people in North America. incontinence is not an inevitable part of the aging process.
http://www.depend.com/learn/faq.asp
Dispelling the myths. Although it's a common condition, fewer than 40 percent of incontinent individuals seek medical advice. Rather than seek treatment, the vast majority adapt to their "problem" by altering their lifestyle. Reasons for failing to report symptoms include the perception that incontinence is "normal" with advancing age or that symptoms are not severe enough to treat.
How common is urinary incontinence? Incontinence affects an estimated 15 to 19 million people in North America.
Is it just a natural part of aging? Incontinence is not an inevitable part of the aging process. According to the U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, 86 percent of incontinent individuals who seek medical treatment realize improvements, including complete restoration of continence. However, some age-related changes such as the loss of estrogen in post-menopausal women and enlargement of the prostate in men, may contribute to urinary incontinence.
Isn't this simply a matter of controlling wetness and odor? Incontinence is more than a hygiene concern. Individuals with incontinence should always see their health professional for a thorough evaluation.

Urinary Incontinence
What Is Urinary incontinence?
Urinary incontinence (UI) is the unintentional loss of urine. UI is a problem for more than 17 million Americans - 85 percent of them women. Although about half of the elderly have episodes of incontinence, bladder problems are not a natural consequence of aging, and they are not exclusively a problem of the elderly. Although UI can be improved in 8 out of 10 cases, fewer than half of those with bladder problems ever discuss the condition with their health care professional. The disorder, therefore, often goes untreated. UI is also referred to as bladder incontinence. What are causes of UI?
UI has a number of causes. Women are most likely to develop incontinence either during pregnancy and childbirth, or after the hormonal changes of menopause , because of weakened pelvic muscles. Older men can become incontinent as the result of prostate surgery. Pelvic trauma, spinal cord damage, caffeine, or medications, including cold preparations and diet drugs that are available over-the-counter, can also cause episodes of UI. Diseases which affect the nerves that control the bladder, such as
