Impotence warning call for smokers

It is hoped the fear of impotence will make men stop smoking
Cigarette packets should tell smokers to expect impotence rather than heart disease or cancer, says the British Medical Association. The BBC's James Westhead: "Smoking affects sexual performance" Doctors' leaders believe that warning younger smokers of the link between lighting up and erectile dysfunction would be a far more effective deterrent than any prospect of far more serious disease later in life. It is thought that smoking is responsible for impotence in 120,000 men in the UK aged between 30 and 49. Health Minister Tessa Jowell said that she would be pressing for clear labelling at a European health ministers' meeting which will discuss the issue next week. She said: "It is important to communicate to the public the range of conditions that smoking causes, and most people don't know that smoking can cause impotence." The message is that smoking can damage your sex life The call has also been backed both by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and the Impotence Association.

102. Performance Anxiety And Impotence
An explanation of sexual performance anxiety in men and impotence.
http://www.drdaveanddee.com/impotence.html
Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,
I'm 18 years old. I've never had a problem with impotence, never had trouble achieving an erection. But about 2 weeks ago, before sex with my girlfriend, it was very very difficult to get an erection. Ever since, thats the only thing on my mind. I find myself constantly worrying about impotence. When I'm intimate I find myself doing nothing but worrying. I do get erections, it just takes a while. Do you have any advice? Any ways I can get this off my mind? I've heard that a lot of impotence cases are mental.
Signed,
How do I get over this?
Dear How,
It isn’t unusual for a healthy 18 year old with otherwise normal erectile function to develop temporary erectile dysfunction. This is usually due to performance anxiety. This is not impotence, which is a chronic condition.
Impotence is most often linked to blood flow problems, usually due to blocked arteries and/or leaking veins. Blocked arteries and vein leakage problems are complex, but in general result from a blockage of arteries through which blood flows into the penis, or a loss of compliance of the erectile tissue inside the penis and the veins through which the blood leaves the penis. These problems, which are often related to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), are seldom seen in otherwise healthy young men, although they can occur at an early age in individuals with diabetes or a number of other chronic medical conditions.
Some impotence is due to malfunction of nerves to the penis, as seen in people with spinal cord injuries. Sometimes the cause of impotence is purely psychological, but often psychological problems are a reaction to, rather than a cause of impotence. Smoking is a major risk factor for developing impotence, which is yet another reason for folks to quit. Alcohol impairs erectile function.

Viagra has disturbing side effects
Young men who take Viagra for recreational use risk impotence, an expert has warned. The hype surrounding the drug has lead to some using it in nightclubs as an aphrodisiac. Roger Kirby, a consultant urologist from St George's Hospital in London, says young men are already reported to be experiencing medical problems after taking Viagra (technical name sildenafil). They have developed a persistent and painful erection, a condition known as priapism. This condition may result in a lack of blood supply to and consequent damage of the intracavernosal smooth muscle, the muscle that helps to produce an erection. Drugs cocktail The damage may cause the sufferer to develop permanent impotence problems (erectile dysfunction). Mr Kirby, honorary secretary of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, says there is no data to support the claim that Viagra improves the normal erection or alters orgasmic sensation.

Impotence/Erectile Dysfunction
What is impotence? Impotence is the failure to achieve an erection, a condition faced by an increasing number of men. In order to diagnose the potential problems that lead to this condition, it is useful to describe what conditions must be present for erection to take place. The first component you need to achieve an erection is a normal, intact male sexual organ. Secondly, a normal amount of circulating hormones is necessary. Third, a man must have an intact nerve supply and blood flow to the male sex organ. Finally, normal erections require a healthy psychological response to the arousing stimuli, coupled with a relaxed state of mind. Impotence is almost always treatable, a resounding majority of patients will respond to one of the available treatments. Unfortunately, many men (some estimates are as high as 1/3) will not seek treatment due to the nature of this problem. Impotence is an extremely common condition and is very treatable. Please check with your doctor to explore treatment options. Another option to try before taking the leap to Viagra, or even along with Viagra is

What is Impotence
Impotence is a consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Medical professionals often use the term "erectile dysfunction" to describe this disorder and to differentiate it from other problems that interfere with sexual intercourse, such as lack of sexual desire and problems with ejaculation and orgasm. This fact sheet focuses on impotence defined as erectile dysfunction. Impotence can be a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. These variations make defining impotence and estimating its incidence difficult. Experts believe impotence affects between 10 and 15 million American men. In 1985, the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey counted 525,000 doctor-office visits for erectile dysfunction.

111. Impotence: A Woman's Perspective
An article about the woman s response to her mate s impotence.
http://www.grandtimes.com/impotencew.html
Impotence: A Woman's Perspective by J. Douglas Trapp, M.D. After the initial concern that something is going wrong with the relationship, a woman may turn her frustration and disappointment into anger at her mate-especially if they don't communicate well. More likely, though, the reaction is self-blame. The woman may feel that she's no longer attractive or that her partner doesn't love her any more. She worries that he may be having an affair and that she'll be rejected or abandoned.
Another strong emotion the partners of impotent men often feel is the fear that he may be physically ill. After all, it's generally known that about 85-90 percent of erectile problems are caused by an existing medical condition. Despite their worry, many women are reluctant to suggest that their partner see a doctor. Sometimes, both partners see a doctor. Sometimes, both partners avoid the issue entirely and pretend that everything is fine. This attitude can intensify anger or depression.
Some women are honestly glad for the impotence-glad they don't "have to have sex" anymore. Their secret relief, however, may be accompanied by guilt at feeling that way or a sense of inadequacy because they don't enjoy sexual intercourse.
A woman's emotions regarding the impotence of her partner can be complex. And don't forget that the male partner is going through similar strong emotions. If you've had some of these feelings, remember that such emotions are normal and that most women dealing with impotence will experience them. Acknowledge them. Understand you're not alone and you're not unusual. There are 30 million partners of impotent men!

    Successful treatment for impotence
Summary: The causes of impotence and how to find the best treatment.
Text: Jana had always thought her marriage was happy. But lately she'd noticed that her husband Luis* had lost interest in making love. Maybe he didn't find her attractive any more now she was older, she wondered. Maybe he was seeing another woman.
But something else was stopping Luis from making love - the fear that he might be impotent. The last time they'd made love he'd had trouble getting an erection. What if it happened again? Like many men, he found his problem difficult to talk about, even to his wife.
But it's common for men of any age to have this problem sometimes. Fatigue, stress or too much alcohol can all cause erection difficulties - just because it happens once doesn't mean it will continue. Although there are many physical rea-sons for erection problems, feelings also play a part. For some men, simply being worried about impotence can affect their erection.
But whether the problem is physical, mental or both, it's usually treatable. The im-portant thing is for men not to feel shy about talking to their partners or getting professional help - after all, it's a common problem affecting more than a million men in Australia.

          What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?
Impotence, or erectile dysfunction (ED), may result from the total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to achieve an erection, or the ability to only sustain a brief erection. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 15 million to 30 million men are affected by ED, depending on the definition used. Although in the past it was commonly believed to be due to psychological problems, it is now known that 80 percent to 90 percent of impotence is caused by physical problems, usually related to the blood supply of the penis. Many advances have occurred in both diagnosis and treatment of ED.

        Introduction
The problem of an inadequate erection is probably one of the biggest issues a man confronts. Most men experience erectile problems on occasion, but impotence, also called erectile dysfunction, is defined as "the persistent failure to develop and maintain erections of sufficient rigidity for penetrative sexual intercourse." Of course, men have other kinds of sexual problems including lack of desire and problems with ejaculation, yet impotence is the most common and troubling. The best way for men to begin solving erectile problems is by reading about men's sexual system - anatomy, physiology, diseases, drugs, diagnosis and treatments. Some problems may be solved simply and others may require a visit to your family doctor or a urologist. In either case, we encourage you to become an educated health care consumer, which should help you regardless of the cause or cure for your problem.
