Impotence/Erectile Dysfunction Introduction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) or male impotence is defined as the inability of a man to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for mutually satisfactory intercourse with his partner. Sexual health and function are important determinants of quality of life. As Americans age, disorders such as erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence are becoming increasingly more important. Because this subject is discussed widely in the media, men and women of all ages are seeking guidance in an effort to improve their relationships and experience satisfying sex lives. Sexual dysfunction is often associated with disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, nervous system disorders, and depression. Erectile dysfunction may also be an unwanted side effect from medication. In some men, sexual dysfunction may be the symptom of such disorders that brings them to the doctor's office. The successful treatment of impotence has been demonstrated to improve intimacy and satisfaction, improve sexual aspects of quality of life as well as overall quality of life, and relieve symptoms of depression.

Lifestyle may play role in potential for impotence
May 3, 2000 Web posted at: 11:24 a.m. EDT (1524 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen ATLANTA (CNN) Drinking, exercise and body type are factors that can affect whether or not a man will become impotent, according to new research being presented at the American Urological Association's annual meeting in Atlanta.

Your pulse quickens as the woman of your dreams kisses you passionately and then leads you to the bedroom. The candles are lit, the champagne is chilled, all systems are go! All systems, that is, but the most important one. No matter how hard you try, your once-proud rocket has become little more than a quivering useless mass. Looks like it's back to the launch pad for you.
Every year, impotence, or "erectile dysfunction," affects millions of men across the world, with one study showing that as many as half of men over the age of 40 are impotent at least part of the time. Originally, it was thought that impotence was caused by anxiety, but according to the Erectile Dysfunction Institute, up to 90 percent of all cases of impotence are physical as opposed to psychological. That's right: High cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, prostate cancers or inflammations, and hormonal imbalances cause the vast majority of all cases of impotence. The good news is that medical science has proved that all of these conditions can be virtually eliminated (and even cured) with a low-fat vegan diet.
Viagra and other anti-impotence drugs may get you through the night, but a vegetarian diet can get you through your life. Numerous physicians and nutritionists agree that the best way to prevent artery blockage as well as multiple other conditions that cause impotence is to eat a diet high in fiber, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods will scrub the plaque off the arterial walls to get your blood flowing and your love life going again in no time. They also agree that you need to avoid eating all animal foods (meat, eggs, cheese, milk, butter, etc.) to keep your cholesterol and blood pressure in check. However a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds the risk may be higher than previously thought. When Ellis Corets, 69, was diagnosed with prostate cancer six years ago, he had to choose between radiation treatment, just waiting, and radical prostatectomy the complete removal of his prostate gland.

Alternate Names : Erectile Dysfunction, Impotence, Sexual Dysfunction - Male Definition An erection problem is the inability to get or maintain an erection that is firm enough for a man to have intercourse. You may be unable to get an erection at all, or you may lose the erection during intercourse before you are ready. If the condition persists, the medical term is erectile dysfunction.
Male Reproductive Anatomy Erection problems are common in adult men. In fact, almost all men experience occasional difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. In many cases, it is a temporary condition that will go away with little or no treatment. In other cases, it can be an ongoing problem that can damage a man's self esteem and harm his relationship with his partner, and thus requires treatment.

    Impotence
    Overview Treatment Definition:
Impotence is the inability to achieve and maintain penile erection sufficient to complete satisfactory intercourse.
Alternative Names: Male impotence; Sexual dysfunction - male; Erectile dysfunction; Organic impotence; Inorganic or psychogenic impotence
Considerations: Between 2 and 30 million men in the United States are affected by impotence problems, according to recent estimates. About 52% of men between 40 and 70 years-old have some degree of erectile dysfunction (ED). Approximately 90% of ED is caused by physical, not psychological, problems. Risk factors for ED include:
    • hypertension (high blood pressure) hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) diabetes coronary artery disease peripheral vascular disease anemia medications smoking alcohol abuse surgical procedures (vascular surgeries, abdomino-perineal resection, radical prostatectomy, other pelvic surgeries, etc.) neurological conditions depression endocrine disorgers (low testosterone, thyroid disease, hyperprolactinemia, etc.)

( andro- a combining form meaning "male", "male part or organ". Also, andr- [ < Gk andr- ] ) Ask any ten year old school kid with an average GK (general knowledge) who a gynecologist is or what gynecology is, and pat will often come the right answer. For some obscure reason, the Greek root 'gynaik', which means 'woman', seems to be very well known to many. Yet 'andrology', with its exactly identical and obvious Greek roots, is something that even most doctors haven't heard of. What's worse is that many respectable dictionaries don't mention it either. This is despite Google and Yahoo yielding more than 200, 000 links when one enters 'andrology' as the search term. Confusing the issue further is the fact that, except in a few countries, andrology remains a sub-specialty area within urology. This is probably because, unlike in the female, the same organ (penis) is used for both urination and copulation in the male, and hence the territorial encompassment - and confusion. It is quite obvious therefore, that there's a lot of confusion here and that this nomenclature needs to be reviewed.

    Impotence / Erectile Dysfunction
    What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?
Impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is the inability to achieve an erection, and/or dissatisfaction with the size, rigidity, and/or duration of erections. Erectile dysfunction affects millions of men. Although in the past it was commonly believed to be due to psychological problems, it is now known that 80 to 90 percent of impotence is caused by physical problems, usually related to the blood supply of the penis. Many advances have occurred in both diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction. What are the risk factors for erectile dysfunction?
According to the National Institutes of Health, erectile dysfunction is also a symptom in many disorders and diseases. Direct risk factors for erectile dysfunction may include the following:
    • prostate problems type 2 diabetes hypogonadism in association with a number of endocrinologic conditions hypertension (high blood pressure) vascular disease and vascular surgery high levels of blood cholesterol low levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) drugs neurogenic disorders Peyronie's disease (distortion or curvature of the penis) priapism (inflammation of the penis) depression alcohol ingestion lack of sexual knowledge

    Q:
For the last three weeks, I have been unable to have intercourse with my wife because of impotence. I've been diagnosed with Lupus and am taking Cardizem, prednisone, Plaquenil, and ketoprofen. I used to drink pretty heavily but haven’t touched a drop for the last three weeks. I’d like to do something about this and would appreciate your help.
A: In order for an erection to occur, a matrix of blood vessels in the penis must be able to sufficiently fill with blood at a pressure necessary to maintain the erection. This requires normal blood vessels and blood flow, as well as a properly functioning nervous system. There is a multiplicity of causes for impotence and often, the identified cause may still not lead to satisfactory resolution of the problem. Although I can find no link between lupus and impotence, other problems causing blockages in small blood vessels can cause impotence including diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. The next place to look is medications. Drugs to treat high blood pressure like Cardizem are one of the most common causes for impotence. It would be useful to check the side effect profile of all your medications for others that may cause this problem.

    Garlic and Impotence
Garlic has always been known as an aphrodisiac and from a medical point of view it can improve blood circulation significantly. Now it appears that an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is primarily responsible for the mechanism of erection. Studies have recently shown that garlic in certain forms can stimulate the production of NOS particularly in individuals who have low levels of this enzyme. Summary: Smoking and Erectile Dysfunction in Men Terms Impotence, or penile erectile dysfunction, is the repeated inability to have or maintain an erection. The condition affects roughly 1 in 10 men between the ages of 21 and 75 - that's about two million men in the UK alone. In up to 75% of cases, the cause is physical. 50% Increased Risk in Smokers Smoking increases the risk of erectile dysfunction by around 50% for men in their 30s and 40s. Diabetes, high cholesterol levels and drugs used to treat high blood pressure are also important risk factors. 120,000 UK Men in their 30s and 40s impotent due to smoking On the basis of these risks and the prevalence of smoking in the UK, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and the British Medical Association (BMA) estimate that up to 120,000 UK men in their 30s and 40s are impotent as a direct consequence of smoking. This figure is likely to be an underestimate, because it does not include impotence due to previous smoking in men who no longer smoke. Mechanisms During an erection, large quantities of blood flow, under pressure, into the penile arteries. This causes the veins which drain the penis to become compressed, so preventing the immediate outflow of blood. This process is significantly impaired by smoking.
