I normally never talk about politics, but I find it disgusting that politicians have the time to call a press conference ( while people are dying ) to criticize the President and people that are helping but they can't find time to help victims of the disaster themselves. Take a looong look at the scumbag politicians you see on TV and ask yourself...what has THAT person done to HELP the children without food, shelter...many who have lost everything, even their family. This difference is due to the much higher heat capacity of water than of air. Offered here is an interesting life science application of water's high heat capacity and its serious implications for the maintenance of body temperature and the prevention of hypothermia in warm-blooded animals.

hypothermia may be a new word to you, but it is the only word that hypothermia is caused by exposure to cold, aggravated by wet, wind, and exhaustion.
    http://www.outdoorclub.org/Hypothermia.html
    HYPOTHERMIA
If you are outdoors enjoying your favorite sport, you presumably do not intend to jeopardize your life. Hypothermia may be a new word to you, but it is the only word that describes the rapid, progressive mental and physical collapse accompanying the chilling of the inner core of the human body. Hypothermia is caused by exposure to cold, aggravated by wet, wind, and exhaustion. It is the number one killer of outdoor recreationalists.
COLD KILLS IN TWO DISTINCT STEPS
    EXPOSURE AND EXHAUSTION
The moment your body begins to loose heat faster than it produces it, you are undergoing exposure. Two things happen: 1.You voluntarily exercise to stay warm.
2.Your body makes involuntary adjustments to preserve normal temperature in the vital organs, and you start shivering.
Either response drains your energy reserves. The only way to stop the drain is to reduce the degree of exposure.
THE TIME TO PREVENT HYPOTHERMIA IS DURING THE PERIOD OF EXPOSURE AND GRADUAL EXHAUSTION
    HYPOTHERMIA
If exposure continues until your energy reserves are exhausted: 1.Cold reaches the brain depriving you of good judgement and reasoning power. You will not realize this is happening.

    alcoholism
, drug addiction deaths were attributed to hypothermia in the United States from 1979 to 1994, but experts suspect that many fatal cases go unrecognized. Nearly half the victims were 65 or older, with males dominating every age group. Nonwhites were also overrepresented in the statistics. Among males 65 and older, nonwhites outnumbered whites by more than four to one.
Hypothermia is divided into two types: primary and secondary. Primary hypothermia occurs when the body's heat-balancing mechanisms are working properly but are subjected to extreme cold, whereas secondary hypothermia affects people whose heat-balancing mechanisms are impaired in some way and cannot respond adequately to moderate or perhaps even mild cold. Primary hypothermia typically involves exposure to cold air or immersion in cold water. The cold air variety usually takes at least several hours to develop, but immersion hypothermia will occur within about an hour of entering the water, since water draws heat away from the body much faster than air does. In secondary hypothermia, the body's heat-balancing mechanisms can fail for any number of reasons, including strokes , diabetes, malnutrition , bacterial infection, thyroid disease, spinal cord injuries (which prevent the brain from receiving crucial temperature-related information from other parts of the body), and the use of medications and other substances that affect the brain or spinal cord. Alcohol is one such substance. In smaller amounts it can put people at risk by interfering with their ability to recognize and avoid cold-weather dangers. In larger amounts it shuts down the body's heat-balancing mechanisms.

Spring is here and so is the sailing season. The days are longer and warmer but the water temperature is low enough to cause some serious survival problems. Don't be foolish and sail without a wet or dry suit early in the year. A cold dip is a chilling experience and may result in a tragedy which could have been avoided.
The following article is meant to be a starting point in the discussion of Hypothermia. It is not the most up to date material and is not intended to be the last word on hypothermia! If you have more up to date information, share it with the fleet. In case of any emergency, call a doctor!
    Hypothermia
Hypothermia is subnormal temperature within the central body. In extreme cases, you die! When a person is immersed in cold water, the skin and nearby tissue may cool very fast. However, it may take 10 to 15 minutes before the temperature of the heart and brain starts to drop. When the core temperature reaches 90 F, unconsciousness may occur. When the core temperature drops to 85 F, heart failure is the usual cause of death. However, a person in cold water may drown because he loses the use of his arms and legs and his consciousness becomes clouded.
Survival in cold water depends on many factors. The temperature of the water is only one. Others include body size, fat, and activity in the water to name a few.

    Hypothermia
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Hypothermia is a medical condition in which the victim's core body temperature has dropped to significantly below normal and normal metabolism begins to be impaired. This begins to occur when the core temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit For unknown reasons, people who fall critically unconscious (and arguably die , though there are some who argue that any reversible condition is not , by definition, death) in very cold water can, in rare cases, be resuscitated, even though they would be expected to have died of drowning and/or hypothermia. See Mammalian diving reflex There are two types of hypothermia, acute and chronic . Acute hypothermia is the more dangerous; the body temperature goes down very swiftly, often in a matter of seconds or minutes, for example when a victim falls through an ice-covered lake. Chronic hypothermia occurs when the body temperature goes down over a longer period of time.

Tony is a retired mailman. He has lived in New England his whole life and has seen some harsh winters. None, however, was as cold or snowy as one winter a few years ago. First, the temperature dipped to below zero and a snowstorm left 2 feet of snow. Then an ice storm caused lots of broken power lines. That meant Tony had no heat in his house, but he also couldn’t leave. The temperature inside dropped to 60° F quite quickly. When his neighbor rang the doorbell to check on him the next day, Tony was confused, and his speech was slurred. He was taken to the emergency room. A doctor examined him and warmed him up. Tony went to his brother’s house until the heat came back on. Turns out he’d had accidental hypothermia. Cold weather is very risky for older people. Almost everyone knows about winter dangers such as broken bones from falls on ice or breathing problems caused by cold air. But the winter chill can also lower the temperature inside your body. That can be deadly if not treated quickly. This drop in body temperature, often caused by staying in a cool place for too long is called hypothermia (hi-po-ther-mee-uh).
