Techniques for preventing hypotension during spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section (Cochrane Review)
Emmett RS, Cyna AM, Andrew M, Simmons SW ABSTRACT What's new in this issue Search abstracts Browse alphabetical list of titles Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 23 May 2002. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Objectives: To assess the relative efficacy and side effects of prophylactic interventions for hypotension following spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section. Search strategy: The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group Trials Register (January 2002) and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (Cochrane Library, Issue 4, 2001). Selection criteria: All published or unpublished randomised controlled trials comparing interventions to prevent hypotension with placebo or alternative treatment in women having spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section. Data collection and analysis: Trials identified from searching are assessed for inclusion by the same two reviewers independently. Studies are excluded from review where: hypotension is not an outcome measure or clearly defined prior to administering a rescue treatment; randomisation is unsatisfactory; the spinal anaesthetic technique or dose of local anaesthetic is not controlled-for; and the intervention is implemented in response to a fall in blood pressure rather than for prevention. Review Manager software is used for calculation of the treatment effect, represented by relative risks and proportional and absolute risk reductions.

Objectives. Hypotension occurs commonly among preterm neonates, but its cause and consequences remain unclear. Secondary data analyses from the NEOPAIN trial identified the clinical factors associated with hypotension and examined the contributions of morphine treatment or hypotension to severe intraventricular or death. Methods. In the NEOPAIN trial, 898 ventilated neonates between 23 and 32 weeks of gestation were enrolled, with equal numbers randomized to receive masked morphine or placebo infusions.

Alternate Names : Postural Hypotension Attribution Orthostatic hypotension is low blood pressure that occurs when a person stands up. It results in decreased blood flow to the brain. What is going on in the body? When a person goes from sitting or lying to a standing position, gravity can cause blood to pool in the lower half of the body. This can lower the blood pressure . However, the body has many ways to prevent this from happening, such as the heart pumping harder. In various conditions, the body is unable to prevent abnormally low blood pressure from happening when a person stands up. This can lead to symptoms and is called orthostatic hypotension. What are the causes and risks of the infection? Orthostatic hypotension has many possible causes, including:
