HYPOPARATHYROIDISM
Too little parathyroid hormone production
Hypoparathyroidism is the combination of symptoms due to inadequate parathyroid hormone production. This is a VERY rare condition, and most commonly occurs because of damage or removal of parathyroid glands at the time of parathyroid or thyroid surgery. If this is the first parathyroid page you have read from our site, we strongly recommend that you read our introduction to the parathyroid gland first! Remember, hyperparathyroidism is much more common than hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is the state of decreased secretion or activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This leads to decreased blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia) and increased levels of blood phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia). Symptoms can range from quite mild (tingling in the hands, fingers, and around the mouth) to more severe forms of muscle cramps leading all the way to tetany (severe muscle cramping of the entire body), and convulsions (this is very rare!). Parathyroid gland insufficiency is quite rare, but it can occur in several well defined ways. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is the loss of active parathyroid tissue following thyroid or parathyroid surgery. More rare is a defect present at birth (congenital) where a person is born without parathyroid glands. Occasionally, the specific cause of hypoparathyroidism cannot be determined.

Endocrine glands Definition Return to top Hypoparthyroidism is having too little parathyroid hormone , which causes abnormal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Calcium and phosphorus are important body minerals. They form the mineral component of bones, and they exist as charged particles called ions in the blood and inside cells. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorus in bone and blood. PTH is made by four small parathyroid glands located in the neck, behind the thyroid gland. Hypoparathyroidism is the disease caused by a lack of PTH. Blood calcium levels fall, and phosphorus levels rise. Low blood calcium levels may cause symptoms such as tingling in the lips, fingers, and toes. It may also cause muscle cramps or spasms. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is injury to the parathyroid glands during head and neck surgery. Rarely, hypoparathyroidism is a side effect of radioactive iodine treatment for

Endocrine glands Alternative names Return to top Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy; Types 1A and 1B pseudohypoparathyroidism Definition Return to top Pseudohypoparathyroidism is a genetic disorder that resembles hypoparathyroidism (lowered levels of parathyroid hormone) but is caused by a lack of response to parathyroid hormone rather than a deficiency in the hormone itself. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands that helps regulate calcium and phophate levels in the blood. The effects of PTH are seen in several body systems including the skeletal, gastrointestinal, renal (kidney), muscular, and central nervous system In pseudohypoparathyroidism, there is an adequate amount of PTH but the body cannot respond to it. The body is "resistant" to the effects of PTH. As a result, a picture very similar to hypoparathyroidism develops with low calcium levels in the blood and high phophate levels. This results in the characteristic symptoms which are generally first seen in childhood. There are two different types of pseudohypoparathyroidism, both of which are caused by abnormal genes. Type I can be further divided into two sub-types: type Ia is caused by a one-gene abnormality inherited in an autosomal dominant manner (only one parent needs to have the gene for the child to inherit it). This defect also causes short stature, round face and short hand bones and is also called Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy.

The parathyroids produce parathyroid hormones that regulate blood levels of calcium necessary for strong bones and teeth, nerve function, and blood clotting. Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder associated with insufficient production of parathyroid hormone, the inability to make a usable form of parathyroid hormone, or the inability of kidneys and bones to respond to parathyroid hormone production. A deficiency of parathyroid hormone lowers blood calcium levels and raises phosphate levels. Hypoparathyroidism either may be inherited or acquired; the acquired form usually results from parathyroid surgery or an underlying disorder, such as cancer or neck trauma. Signs and Symptoms Hypoparathyroidism is often accompanied by the following signs and symptoms:
  • Muscle spasm or cramping, typically in hands or feet
