I get really faint and then drink orange juice and it passes in about fifteen minutes. Can you e-mail me asap if this sounds like symptoms of the above? I appreciate your help. I await your reply. Thank you, Y Dear Y, Low blood sugar is the same as hypoglycemia, which is its medical term. First find out whether or not you have hypoglycemia (or possibly some other condition) by making a trip to your health care provider, because Alice cannot diagnose your condition over the computer. If you are hypoglycemic, your health care provider will give you more information, offer instructions, answer questions, and/or refer you to a nutritionist to talk about an eating plan that's appropriate for you in managing your low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia symptoms
Here some information on hypoglycemia, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
Hypoglycemia is a disorder of the blood sugar. The prefix “hypo” means low, so hypoglycemia is abnormally low blood sugar. This occurs when the blood does not regulate the glucose level properly. There is also hyperglycemia, which goes by the name diabetes. It’s common to have hypoglycemia as an “illness” in itself, but many diabetics also suffer from it from time to time, depending on their insulin intake. This disorder has many different forms and can start at any time in life (some people are born with it; others discover or “catch” it later). It may also be related to other disorders, or it may occur on its own. It may be chronic, or it may only occur infrequently and randomly. Stress may cause it to start, or an infection. It may also be the result of bad eating habits or drug usage (legal drugs). Normal blood sugar is anywhere from 80 mg/dl to 120 mg/dl. Above or below this range may cause problems. There are many symptoms one may experience when a dip in blood sugar occurs. They include fatigue, vertigo (dizziness), mood changes, anxiety, trembling hands, concentration/attention disorders, visual disturbances, memory problems, sudden sweating, constant feeling of hunger, sleep problems, nightmares, yeast infections, headache, menstruation disorders, or intestinal disorders. Any or all of these may be experienced. The most common are feelings of hunger, fatigue, and vertigo – these are among the first symptoms one may experience when a drop occurs.

Knowing Who's Prone to Hypoglycemia
Adapted From: Hypoglycemia For Dummies Hypoglycemia can strike anyone at any age. Unlike diabetes, not enough studies have been performed to create an accurate profile. Nevertheless, because reactive hypoglycemia can be an early sign of diabetes, it's reasonable to believe that hypoglycemics and diabetics share a genetic predisposition for metabolic disorders and similar risks for environmental triggers. Research suggests that the following people are hypoglycemia's likeliest victims:
  • Women suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS). People suffering from severe stress. People who are overweight (though some are underweight due to their faulty carbohydrate metabolism). Alcoholics. Some researchers have concluded that alcoholism is actually an unrecognized problem with body chemistry, and that all alcoholics are, in fact, hypoglycemics.
Prevailing problem: The pudge!
The sugar and refined carbohydrate-laden diet that the majority of people in developed countries eat has led to a host of health problems, with hypoglycemia being one of them. Although most medical and health organizations recommend that no more than 10 percent of total caloric intake be derived from the refined sugars added to foods, the fact is that most people in developed countries eat far more than that (possibly three times that amount). And what's even more alarming is that some lesser-developed Asian countries are getting a sweet tooth that rivals the that of richer nations! Statistics show that the consumption of sugar worldwide is increasing by 1 to 2 percent every year. Small wonder so many people have a pudge of a problem.

Hypoglycemia The definition of hypoglycemia depends on the age of the child.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia : (Sympathetic stimulation driven by the insulin-antagonizing hormones that function to increase serum glucose). Irritability, pallor, cyanosis, tachycardia, tremors, lethargy, apnea, seizures, diaphoresis, anxiety, headache, tachypnea, weakness, confusion, stupor, ataxia, seizures, coma. Evaluation and management When hypoglycemia is suspected or is of concern:
  • Glucose oxidase reagent strip: if low then: Venous sample for glucose, basic metabolic panel (electrolytes, BUN, Cr), liver panel, lactate, insulin level, C-peptide, growth hormone, and cortisol levels. Immediately begin efforts to collect urine (bagged specimen) and send for urinalysis and urine organic acid analysis. Check urine for ketones. A good starting point for evaluating hypoglycemia is to divide patients whether they are ketotic or non-ketotic.
Normal physiologic response to decreased glucose production is increased mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation and the production of ketones. Ketones provide an indirect indication of whether hypoglycemia is the result of inadequate production or of over-utilization of glucose (insulin-induced over-utilization, associated with low urine or plasma ketones). The history of the relationship of the hypoglycemia to feeding is often helpful. Hypoketotic hypoglycemia developing within several minutes of feeding is typical of hyperinsulinism. Patients with defects in glycogen breakdown, gluconeogenesis, or fatty acid oxidation tend to tolerate short-term fasting much better.

ADULT HYPOGLYCEMIA (Low Blood Sugar) Causes Symptoms Treatment 1. Skipping a meal or snack
2. Not eating all foods allowed for each meal.
3. Extra exercise/activity
4. Combining certain medication together.
5. Drinking alcoholic beverages without eating.
6. Sometimes hypoglycemia occurs without warning. Hypoglycemia Prevention 1. Test your blood sugar frequently to know the values and help identify when and how much insulin, food or exercise is needed to prevent/avoid hypoglycemia reactions
2. Eat healthy meals and and snacks on time.
3. Check blood sugar before exercising (ex: exercise 90 minutes after a meal).
4. Do not change your insulin dose, brand, type or source except on your doctor's advice.
Mild hypoglycemia (70 or lower) shakiness, sweating, hunger, chest pain, numbness/tingling Moderate hypoglycemia (50 or lower) dizziness, headache, slurred speech, mood changes, blurred vision, feeling very tired Severe hypoglycemia (40 or lower) unresponsiveness unconsciousness convulsions or seizures coma Caution If you have seizures or heart problems never allow blood sugars below 100.
