Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)
What is hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia is the condition of having a glucose (blood sugar) level that is too low to effectively fuel the body's blood cells. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. The normal range of blood sugar is approximately 60 to 120 mg/dl (milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood). When the level is below 45 mg/dl, a serious condition is suspected. Hypoglycemia may be a condition by itself, or may be a complication of diabetes or other disorders. It is most often seen as a complication of diabetes, which is sometimes referred to as insulin reaction.
What causes hypoglycemia?
There are many different possible causes of hypoglycemia, including:
  • diabetics taking too much insulin to lower the blood sugar
  • other drugs used to treat diseases such as AIDS-related pneumonia
  • psychological disturbances
  • alcohol consumption without eating adequately
  • diabetics who miss a meal or exercise too strenuously
  • insulin-producing tumor in the pancreas

Hypoglycemia
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Hypoglycemia occurs when your body's blood sugar, or glucose, is abnormally low. The term insulin shock is used to describe severe hypoglycemia that results in unconsciousness
Alternative Names: Insulin shock; Low blood sugar
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Hypoglycemia results when your body's glucose is used up too rapidly, when glucose is released into the bloodstream more slowly than is needed by your body, or when excessive insulin is released into the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas in response to increased glucose levels in the blood, which then reduces blood glucose.
Hypoglycemia is relatively common in diabetics. It occurs when too much insulin or oral antidiabetic medication is taken, not enough food is eaten, or from a sudden increase in the amount of exercise without an increase in food intake.

Symptoms Of Hypoglycemia And Hypoadrenocorticism
The Wrong Diet can produce stress in the body. The body must then compensate, or adapt to keep functioning. Selye and Tintera have found that the keystone of defense is the adrenal cortex. An individual with adrenal under-function does not handle stress well. Tintera calls this hypoadrenocorticism (Bul 96). Selye writes that the main regulators of the stress syndrome are: brain, nerves, pituitary, adrenals, thyroid, liver, kidney, blood vessels, connective tissue cells, and white blood cells. These main regulators interact, causing the body to adjust or adapt. The way in which they interact is different for every person depending on one's conditioning factors such as heredity, previous exposures, diet, etc. Thus, the same stress my result in chest pain in one person, depression in another, and allergies or general well being in others who are able to adapt, at least for the time being. The Great Number of Symptoms which may result from the failure of the hormonal adaption mechanism is admittedly a challenge to credibility. Excessive fatigue and inability to concentrate are the most common. Salzar found that relative hypoglycemia mimics any neuropsychiatric disorder. He listed the major symptoms from a psychiatric standpoint: depression, insomnia, irritability, lack of concentration, crying spells, phobias, forgetfulness, confusion, unsocial or anti-social behavior, and suicidal tendencies.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE HYPOGLYCEMIA?
Do you know that shakiness, faintness, dizziness or tremor are a frequent sign of idiopathic reactive hypoglycemia (IRH), particularly when it is accompanied by nausea and fatigue. It may be caused by certain foods or food combinations. Do you get palpitations or heart irregularity which are not uncommon food in this condition? These are symptoms due to adrenaline release. Transitory gray patches in the field of vision (called scotomata) may also occur without warning, but may precede a Migraine type headache or fuzzy headedness and mental depression, even melancholia. Confusion and seizures may also occur. These are central nervous system symptoms.
Note: Idiopathic reactive hypoglycaemia (IRH) should be differentiated from Diabetic hypoglycaemia. In the latter case there is a fall in blood sugar mainly due to the relative over treatment with diabetic medication, particularly insulin. There are also other, more rare causes of a low blood sugar.

Hypoglycemia
What is Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is considered a cluster of symptoms, not a disease. Normally the body maintains a fairly constant blood sugar level. The amount of sugar in the blood is regulated by the hormone, insulin. Hypoglycemia is thought to be caused by an oversecretion of insulin in response to the blood sugar rising too rapidly after food is eaten, usually after eating foods high in simple carbohydrate. Hypoglycemia can also result from lack of food for example, skipped meals. Symptoms of Hypoglycemia:
The symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, shakiness, fatigue, sweating, anxiety, blurred vision, dizziness. Treatment:
The goal of treatment of hypoglycemia is to slow down the absorption of food through the intestines. This is best done through changes in eating habits. Follow these general guidelines: 1. Avoid simple (refined) carbohydrates. These are foods high in sugar content, such as jams, jellies, table sugar, honey, syrup, molasses, pies, candy, cakes, cookies, pastries and soda pop. 2. Increase your intake of complex carbohydrates (starches). These foods are absorbed more slowly than simple carbohydrates and therefore do not cause rapid increases in blood sugar levels. Examples of complex carbohydrates are breads, cereals, pasta, rice, vegetables, and legumes. If carbohydrates are removed from the diet, the body loses its ability to handle carbohydrate properly.

Jake hadn't eaten since breakfast - he'd just been too busy. As he headed off to wrestling practice, he felt like he was running out of energy, so he grabbed some mini donuts from the vending machine. Two hours later, Jake felt dizzy and shaky, and he was starting to get a headache. Jake had felt this way before, and one of his friends said he might have hypoglycemia. But when Jake visited his doctor, she told him that it was unlikely. Lots of people wonder if they have hypoglycemia (pronounced: hi-po-gly- see -mee-uh), but the condition is not at all common in teens. Teens who do have hypoglycemia usually have another health condition, such as diabetes What Is Hypoglycemia?
The body's most important fuel is glucose, a type of sugar. When you digest most foods, sugar is released, and that sugar ends up in your bloodstream as glucose. Your body, particularly your brain and nervous system, needs a certain level of glucose to function - not too much, and not too little. If your blood glucose level isn't right, your body will react by showing certain symptoms. Hypoglycemia occurs when a person's blood sugar levels are abnormally low, and it's a potentially serious condition. If you know someone who has diabetes, you may have heard them talk about "insulin shock," which is the common name for a severe hypoglycemic reaction. People with diabetes may experience hypoglycemia if they don't eat enough or if they take too much insulin - the medicine most commonly used to treat diabetes in kids.

In a newborn, glucose levels rapidly fall to a low point in the 1 st 2 hours of life which is usually transient (as the source of maternal glucose is removed) and the infant achieves homeostasis. This transition is usually smooth but there are certain high risk infants who are at risk of hypoglycemia. High risk infants:-
  • Infants with increased utilization of glucose (Hyperinsulinism):
Infants of Diabetic mothers . Erythroblastosis fetalis. Beckwith Wiedman syndrome.
