Hypoglycemia
I have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. My doctor put me on a diet that did not seem to work well (high carbohydrate). Recently, I have consulted a Registered Dietitian who has put me on a strict regimen to get some baseline results. She has put me on a no-sugar, hi-protein low carbohydrate diet (no wheat products, pasta or rice; eating lots of seeds and nuts, vegetables, protein; eating fats-butter or oil with starches such as quinoa, amaranth, millet, potatoes, etc.). I'm wondering if this is a good way to start, because I am frustrated with the limited food choices I have. Also, she has told me that planning to get pregnant until the problem is brought under control may be a bad idea. Can you give me any insight into these issues?
Your doctor was incorrect and the dietitian is following the current medical nutrition therapy for hypoglycemia. She needs to find a baseline amount of carbohydrate that will produce no or infrequent symptoms while providing you with the nutrients you need to meet your Recommended Dietary Allowances . Since hypoglycemia symptoms are in response to food, you should be able to stabilize your blood sugar by regulating your carbohydrate intake.

R esearch: H ypoglycemia is a major complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus, and is the predominant limiting factor in the improvement of glycemic control. In type 1 diabetes, hypoglycemia arises from the interplay of excess insulin and deficient counterregulation. Leptin per se or in combination with insulin treatment may normalize the basal HPA activity and the counterregulatory. Furthermore, leptin’s ability to increase insulin sensitivity can lead to a decrease in exogenous insulin, thus minimizing the possibility of antecedent hypoglycemia and the impaired counterregulatory responses to acute hypoglycemia in Type I diabetes. I have shown that leptin normalization without insulin treatment can increase HPA activity and epinephrine (EPI) release while decreasing norepinephrine levels in STZ-diabetic rats. Most interestingly, following leptin normalization STZ-diabetic rats demonstrated a decreased diabetes-associated hyperphagia.

    Low Blood Sugar
    Low Blood Sugar Overview
    • The body regulates its level of glucose, a primary source of energy for the brain, muscles, and other cells, by the actions of different hormones such as insulin, glucagon, and epinephrine.
      • Both insulin and glucagon are manufactured in the pancreas, an organ that assists the digestive tract. Special cells in the pancreas called beta cells make insulin and alpha cells make glucagon.
The role of insulin is to help in the absorption of glucose in the blood by causing it to be stored in the liver or used by other cells in the body.
Glucagon increases the amount of glucose in the blood by breaking down stored glucose called glycogen and releasing it into the bloodstream.
Insulin and glucagon are usually correctly balanced if the liver and pancreas are healthy.
Epinephrine (or adrenalin), traditionally referred to as a stress hormone, is made in the adrenal gland and in certain cells in the central nervous system. It also elevates blood glucose levels by making glucose available for the body during a time of stress. When this mechanism is not working properly, low blood sugar can result. Other hormones, like cortisol made by the adrenal gland and growth hormone made by the pituitary gland, also help in raising the level of blood glucose.

The Serotonin Defense By Paul Rossby Ph.D.
In 1996 I was invited to join a capital murder defense team in Nashville, Tennessee. At that time I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University. I saw this invitation as a unique opportunity to make scientific information concerning impulsive violence accessible to non-scientists, including jurors trying to find plausible explanations for inexplicable acts of cruelty. Serotonin Defense
The serotonin defense is based upon a significant body of scientific evidence accumulated internationally during the past 30+ years indicating (1) that there is a link between low serotonin activity in the brain and deficient impulse control that can lead to intermittent explosive disorder, violent suicide, and severe unrestrained aggression (rage); (2) that a majority of type-2 alcoholics ("mean drunks") have abnormally low brain serotonin activity; (3) that low dopamine activity in the brain is associated with low serotonin (dopamine is a natural brain chemical) and high risk for multiple addictions; and (4) that low serotonin activity in the brain is associated with a tendency toward non-diabetic hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), mental confusion, and panic.

    Hypoglycemia
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
    Hypoglycemia
    Hypoglycemia
is a medical term referring to a pathologic state produced by a lower than normal amount of sugar ( glucose ) in the blood. The term hypoglycemia literally means "low blood sugar". Hypoglycemia can produce a variety of symptoms and effects but the principal problems arise from an inadequate supply of glucose as fuel to the brain , resulting in impairment of function ( neuroglycopenia ). Derangements of function can range from vaguely "feeling bad" to coma and (rarely) death. Hypoglycemia can arise from many causes, and can occur at any age. Endocrinologists (specialists in disorders of blood glucose metabolism) typically consider the following criteria (referred to as Whipple's triad ) as proving that an individual's symptoms can be attributed to hypoglycemia:
  • Symptoms known to be caused by hypoglycemia Low glucose at the time the symptoms occur Reversal or improvement of symptoms or problems when the glucose is restored to normal
  • However, not everyone has accepted these suggested diagnostic criteria, and even the level of glucose low enough to define hypoglycemia has been a source of controversy in several contexts. For many purposes

    http://www.fibromyalgia-diet.ws/
Diet can help fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia symptoms
It has been estimated by Dr. Paul St. Amand that 40% all people with fibromyalgia, also suffer from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). What this means is that 4 in 10 fibromyalgia sufferers need a fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia diet - else many of their symptoms will flare-up. An improper diet will increase insulin levels, force blood sugar down, and bring out fibromyalgia symptoms that includes fatigue, irritability, headaches, depression, carb cravings, blurry vision, poor memory, and anxiety. At worst, there will also be hypoglycemic symptoms such as fainting or a rapid heartbeat. A proper fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia diet will keep insulin levels from rising and keep blood sugar from lowering.
So if you are one of the 4 out of 10 fibromyalgia sufferers that also has hypoglycemia, here is a diet that helps:

Hypoglycemia Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. This brochure is intended to increase knowledge about reactive hypoglycemia and to give suggestions on its control. What is reactive hypoglycemia?
Reactive hypoglycemia can occur when blood glucose falls, resources of glucose from the liver are exhausted and an individual chooses not to eat. Gradually the body adjusts to this situation by using muscle protein to feed glucose to brain cells and fat to fuel the other body cells. But before this adjustment takes place an individual may experience symptoms of glucose deprivation to the brain resulting in symptoms such as: anxiety, hunger, dizziness, weakness, shaking muscles and racing heart. Because these symptoms are common to many conditions a health care provider should be consulted to assess an individual's specific symptoms and concerns. Who does reactive hypoglycemia effect? Reactive hypoglycemia occurs in about 2-3 out of every 10 young women, more often in obese women and less often in people over age 45. While most people experience low blood glucose levels at times, if the symptoms are severe or ongoing it is important to learn to eat promptly and properly with a balanced meal or snack. Reactive hypoglycemia does not lead to more severe conditions.

  • Additional Readings Glucose, a form of sugar, is the body's main fuel. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occurs when blood levels of glucose drop too low to fuel the body's activity. Carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are the body's main dietary sources of glucose. During digestion, the glucose is absorbed into the blood stream (hence the term "blood sugar"), which carries it to every cell in the body. Unused glucose is stored in the liver as glycogen. Hypoglycemia can occur as a complication of diabetes, as a condition in itself, or in association with other disorders.
