Serum free thyroxine concentrations measured by chemiluminescence in hyperthyroid and euthyroid cats
M Paradis and N Page Serum free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations using chemiluminescence were measured in hyperthyroid cats (n = 72) and clinically normal cats (n = 129) to establish reference values and to determine if this method could be a useful alternative to total T4 (TT4) measurement by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Mean serum FT4 concentration (68.3 +/- 26.8 pmol/L) of hyperthyroid cats was significantly higher than that of euthyroid cats (22.9 +/- 4.8 pmol/L). Reference values for basal FT4 of hyperthyroid and healthy cats were 33 to 114 pmol/L and 16 to 30 pmol/L, respectively. The results of the present study suggest that FT4 measured by chemiluminescence could be a useful alternative to TT4 measured by RIA when evaluating thyroid function in cats, since the hazardous effects of radioactive materials on the manipulators and the environment could be avoided. Further studies are required to corroborate these preliminary findings.

Can a hyperthyroid cause insomnia ?
Posted by Peter Berkey on January 22, 1998 at 19:27:59: I talked to my mom the other day about this and she mentioned a problem that runs in the family. We have a history of thyroid problems. My mom suffers from the condition that slows her down. My grandmother suffered from the type that speeds you up... a "toxic thyroid" or "hyperthyroidism" (she was really wired all the time). I am wondering if this would be the cause of my sleeplessness. My mother thought she had seen what looked to be a "goiter" in my neck when I was younger (early twenties)... this is, of course, an indication of hyperthyroidism... but it went away on it's own. I have never had this type of sleeplessness before. I am 38 years old. At this point, I am not insured, so I have to wait a couple weeks to be tested. Any comments or suggestions?

Berry. Department of Anatomy, Physiological Sciences and Radiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27606. INTRODUCTION : Pulmonary hyperinflation is a thoracic radiographic finding in cats with hyperthyroidism. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference between hyperthyroid (n=40, as determined by elevated serum T4 assay, or failure to suppress TSH, or a positive pertechnetate scan) and age-matched control cats (n=47) using thoracic radiographic mensuration. METHODS : Measurements were obtained from thoracic radiographs (right and left lateral and ventro-dorsal) which included: thoracic width at the level of the T3 and T8, length of the vertebrae of T8, heart width, and the position of the diaphragmatic crura (DQ and cupula (DCu) relative to vertebra using a previously described scoring system. A total inspiratory score was calculated by the sum of the average right and left crural scores (lateral), the DCu (lateral) and DCu (VD) positions and compared between the two groups using non-parametric statistics with a p value of

Objective : To determine whether simultaneous ultrasonography at the time of scintigraphy affects the diagnosis or diagnostic confidence in patients with hyperthyroidism.
Method Used: A retrospective study was carried out involving 100 patients who attended for investigation of hyperthyroidism between 01/07/01 and 31/03/02. All patients ( 15 male, 85 female) had simultaneous radioisotope scanning and ultrasound of their thyroid glands performed and reported. Subsequently the radio-isotope images were reported on in isolation and a second report generated. The results of the two reports were compared.
Results: It was found that the reports were the same in 88 cases, different in 12 cases (the diagnosis changing from isolated scintigraphy to combined examination in (n) cases as follows: MNG (multinodular goitre) to Graves (3), Graves to normal in (3), thyroiditis to MNG (2), STA (solitary toxic adenoma) to MNG (1), MNG to normal (1), Graves to MNG (1) and MNG to STA (1) ).
