Doug M. Evans, D.V.M.
Dr. Doug Evans was the first veterinarian in the Pacific Northwest to be licensed to provide I therapy for hyperthyroid cats at the Feline Thyroid Clinic in Springfield, Oregon. The clinic is a special purpose veterinary nuclear medicine facility that provides safe, compassionate and state-of-the-art care for hyperthyroid cats and their people. Radioactive Iodine ( I) is the safest, best and ultimately least costly lifetime treatment for virtually all hyperthyroid cats. There are no radiation side effects for treated cats, owing to the selective uptake of radioactive iodine by "abnormal" thyroid cells. After receiving a painless injection of I subcutaneously on the day of admission to the clinic, cats can go home 4-5 days later. Dr. Evans has successfully treated more than 3500 hyperthyroid cats.

Thyroid Disorders
The thyroid gland is located in the lower front part of the neck and weighs less than an ounce. For something so small, it can create a lot of havoc when it is not functioning properly. Thyroid disease is more common in women than in men, with the risk increasing as one gets older. Graves Disease is the most common type of hyperthyroidism.
Our Health News page tracks the latest health news from around the web, from the new treatments to the latest research.
Did You Know? More than 50% of people with hypothyroidism don't know they have it. (American Thyroid Association) Soy interferes with the absorption of thyroid replacement medications. (American Thyroid Association).
Spotlight on Healthy Foods: SALMON Iodine is essential for thyroid function. For this reason, people with underactive thyroid glands are often told to eat salmon and other foods with high iodine levels such as trout and seaweed. On the other end of the spectrum, too much iodine can damage the thyroid, so those with an overactive thyroid gland should watch their iodine intake carefully. A thyroid scan was done and showed no nodules. I was placed Tapazole for four months and went into remission and followed by a relapse eight months later. With the relapse, I decided to find an acupuncturist with a real herbal medicine background and fortunately, I found Dr. Tao from Internet. My symptom included palpitations, weight loss of 5 lbs, scratchy eyes and fatigue. I feel much better after second treatment. On the third treatment, I have no eye symptom and palpitation. In addition the acupuncture treatment, I also taking three Chinese herbs, one for the thyroid, one for the palpitations and one for the eyes. After I finished one cycle-12 visits, I do feel calm and much less stress than before. Now I come once every two weeks for maintenance and very satisfied the progress so far."

HYPERTHYROID?
From: rachelle anonymous@obgyn.net
Fri, 16 Nov 2001 17:37:36 -0600 (CST)
My lab results show that I have a hyperthyroid (over 4.0). I've retaken a blood test to see if it was a lab error, so what i'm wondering is is it possible to have a hyperthyroid without ANY signs or symptoms? I've reviewed some symptoms on various pages and my doctor has taken my pulse, felt my neck, etc. and we can't find anything. Should I seek a second opinion? Are there other tests that can confirm the blood work-up? Is there any danger in treating a normal thyroid for either hyper or hypothyroid? Sorry for all the questions, but I haven't had very much time to research causes and any possible unseen symptoms. Thanks for any help you may offer..........

74. Hypermania Versus Hyperthyroid
Hypermania Versus hyperthyroid. How can I tell the difference between hypomania and hyperthyroid? Do I have to get a new blood test every time I feel
http://www.mental-health-today.com/bp/bipolardr/194.HTM
Q. I am a woman in my forties with a bipolar disorder. I've been on Depakote for four years, and combined Depakote (750 mg) and lithium (450 mg) for two years. This month my blood work showed a thyroid imbalance (hypothyroid), and I'm being treated with Levoxyl. This was probably caused by the lithium. Shortly after beginning the Levoxyl I began having "pressured thinking," irritability, anxiety, and heart palpitations. I also had occasional bouts of euphoria for the first time in six months, and I didn't mind that at all! Although I've made an appointment to see my doctor, I have a question. How can I tell the difference between hypomania and hyperthyroid? Do I have to get a new blood test every time I feel high? A. . A very good question. Hyperthyroidism can mimic or induce mania in folks like yourself. The best thing you can do is call your psychiatric doctor if you feel hyper. The mania has some fairly severe consequences, whereas the hyperthyroidism (which would be mild at most) has a lot less. By assuming the worst case scenario (mania) you will be protecting yourself. There is no good way for you to tell which is which. Chances are you will get better shortly with the thyroid addition, and not have the highs once your level of thyroid hormone is stabilized in your body. You will not need to get thyroid levels but once or twice yearly once your daily dose of thyroid is stabilized.

I-131 Treatment for Hyperthyroidism in Cats at Washington State University
  • Approximate cost (total bill which includes examination fee, I-131, some limited diagnostic evaluation if needed, and hospitalization): $1000-1,200; a cardiology evaluation if needed could add $300 to this estimate. Length of time in hospital: 6 to 8 days. The campus Radiation Safety Office, not the clinician, authorizes release of the cats) Route of I-131 administration: single subcutaneous injection Side effects: none expected, though, as with other treatments for hyperthyroidism, decreases in renal function (please see below) may be observed following I-131 therapy; hypothyroidism is uncommonly observed. Tapazole®: We would like to have Tapazole® discontinued 2 weeks prior to treatment with I-131.
Bloodwork Current lab tests including a minimum of BUN, Creatinine, urine specific gravity and TT4 during a euthyroid state (or nearly normal TT4 ) induced by methimazole treatment, should be available in an otherwise healthy cat. If a cat is showing signs of illness a CBC, Chemistry panel, UA, and possible further diagnostics may be required prior to injection. Bloodwork can be sent with the client, or drawn at WSU. Bloodwork may be repeated at WSU at the discretion of the admitting/supervising clinician. We often ask for Faxes (509-335-3330) of recent laboratory results- especially the CBC, chemistries and urinalysis- so that any concerns we have may be addressed prior to the trip to Pullman.
