BrainTalk Communities General Subjects Complementary and Alternative Medicine PDA View Full Version : Hyperthyroid ravenscape 10-22-2004, 10:28 AM Hi, I am new here. I have several different medical problems but medication always seems to make things worse. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid and the doctor tried two different medications. PTU and methimazole. Both made me feel terrible. I don’t understand that much about hyperthyroid but I guess the levels were changed not too long ago. I wasn’t considered hyperthyroid with the same blood levels until the last test. All this makes me wonder if I really am hyperthyroid to start with.
Are there any alternatives to medicines that help with hyperthyroid? If I’m not very hyper maybe an alternative would work for me. Chemar 10-29-2004, 07:31 PM Hi ravenscape

BrainTalk Communities Specific Neurological Conditions (A - L) Chronic Fatigue Syndrome PDA View Full Version : CFS and Hyperthyroid? ravenscape 10-27-2004, 02:06 AM Do CFS and Hyperthyroid go together? Since the recalibration of the TSH test I am now considered hyperthyroid. Before this most recent test my doctor thought I might have CFS. I wasn’t considered hyperthyroid with the same blood levels until the last test. All this makes me wonder if I really am hyperthyroid to start with.
I have several different medical problems but medication always seems to make things worse. The doctor tried two different medications for thyroid. PTU and methimazole. Both made me feel terrible. The medications make me feel tired and spacy. I forget really important things. I can't stay awake. Does anyone have a diagnosis of both hyperthyroid and CFS? How do you feel with no thyroid treatment? How do you feel with thyroid treatment? Are there any alternatives to medicines that help with hyperthyroid? If I’m not very hyper maybe an alternative would work for me. I feel like the medications made things much worse and I have not gotten back to normal even though I haven’t taken the thyroid medications for about two months. Not that normal was so great.
I answered a checklist for someone on the Endocrine and Glandular forum. I’ll include that information.

Many cats are both hyperthyroid and diabetic. Special considerations are taken for treating a diabetic hyperthyroid cat.

Hyperthyroidism and Diabetes What is it? Signs Effects Diagnosis ... References What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder in cats, and is one of the most common diseases of older cats. Most cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism are over 10 years old. It is not unusual to have both a diabetic and hyperthyroid cat. Hyperthyroidism is rare in dogs. The information presented here is for cats.
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland, a small double-lobed gland in the neck, produces an excess amount of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland produces two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodithyronine (T3). In most cats, hyperthyroidism is the result of too many active cells in the thyroid gland. Very rarely is it caused by thyroid cancer (1-2%). Treatment of hyperthyroidism is usually very successful.
Signs
Typical signs of hyperthyroidism include
  • weight loss increased appetite vomiting excessive drinking excessive urination hyperactivity diarrhea the coat may look dirty and dull some cats have very rapid toenail growth or thick nails some cats display aggression a few cats (less than 10 percent) have decreased appetite, depression, and weakness

Part 4: TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR HYPERTHYROIDISM
There are readily available and effective treatments for all common types of hyperthyroidism.
Some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as tremor and palpitations which are caused by excess thyroid hormone acting on the cardiac and nervous system can be improved within a number of hours by medications called beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol; Inderal). These drugs block the effect of the thyroid hormone but don't have an effect on the thyroid itself, thus Beta-blockers do not cure the hyperthyroidism and do not decrease the amount of thyroid hormone being produced, they just prevent some of the symptoms. For patients with temporary forms of hyperthyroidism (thyroiditis or taking excess thyroid medications), beta blockers may be the only treatment required. Once the thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland) resolves and goes away, the patient can be taken off of these drugs.
Anti-Thyroid Drugs
F or patients with sustained forms of hyperthyroidism, such as Graves' disease or toxic nodular goiter, antithyroid medications are often used.

Part 3: MAKING THE DIAGNOSIS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM
The actual diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is easy to make once its possibility is entertained. Accurate and widely available blood tests can confirm or rule out the diagnosis quite easily within a day or two. causes of hyperthyroidism page which shows a hot nodule.
Common tests used to diagnose hyperthyroidism Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) produced by the pituitary [will be decreased in hyperthyroidism]. Thus, the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is nearly always associated with a LOW (suppressed) TSH level. If the TSH levels are not low, then other tests must be run.
Thyroid hormones themselves (T3, T4, T7) [will be increased]. It should be obvious to you by know that for a patient to have hyperthyroidism they must have high thyroid hormone levels. Sometimes all of the different thyroid hormones are not high and only one or two of the different thyroid hormone measurements are high. This is not too common, as most people with hyperthyroidism will have all of their thyroid hormone measurements high (except TSH).
Iodine thyroid scan [will show if the cause is a single nodule or the whole gland]
We now have a new page that examines in detail all the Laboratory and X-ray Tests used to diagnose thyroid diseases, including a description of these tests and what they mean.

rainian Speaking from experience (dx with thyroid disease a few years ago)..........you really need to listen to your doctors, you need to have your thyroid disease treated. I am not sure what your doctors have told you or if you have educated your self on thyroid function, but the thyroid function has an effect (and controls) most of your body and it's organs. You say you were dx with hyperthroidism - which has an effect on your heart - you can develope a heart disease called cardiomyopathy or have other heart problems as well as well as other problems not associated with the heart. Believe me, I am speaking from experience, you need to listen to you doctors and get this treated before worse things start happening to your body!!!! TwinkyPants

The presence of thyroid tissue is felt to be a stimulus to promote thyroid eye disease. Therefore removing all thyroid tissue has been shown to decrease eye disease. Total thyroidiectomy still leaves a small amount of thyroid tissue behind. 55 patients with Grave's hyperthyroidism and mild or moderate eye changes (swelling, double vision, protrusion of the eyes). All had thyroidectomy, and 16 of the 55 had Radioiodine ablation of the residual thyroid tissue after the surgery. All received T4 therapy. Clinical eye scoring was done at the time of surgery and at 6, 12, and 24 months.
Results - 31 had active eye disease at the time of the surgery. There was a 61% drop in active eye disease by 6 months, and 71% were inactive at 24 months. 38% of inactive eye disease patients became active during 24 month follow-up.

    Hyperthyroid treatment for cats
Posted by buzzard My Page ) on Fri, Jul 29, 05 at 17:26 My 13 year old Sylvester has been recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He is being given tapazole methimazole for this condition. At first he was put on 5mg twice a day. He began to vomit a lot. He was then cut back to half that amount. He is still vomiting. I just did some research on this and this is one of the side effects of this drug. He is also sleeping a lot, which was another side effect. Is there another type of drug that he can take without the side effects? He also has a heart murmur, which goes along with the hyperthyroidism. Follow-Up Postings:
    RE: Hyperthyroid treatment for cats
Hyperthyroidism can be cured, not just medicated, with a single, radioactive iodine treatment administered at a specialty clinic. It's not an inexpensive procedure, but it will cure the condition so your cat can live a normal life without the potentially serious side effects of Tapazole. You can read about radioactive iodine treatment at the link below.

My thyroid was very overactive. I was then sent to seek an endocrinologist (a doctor that specialises in endocrinology, particularly the thyroid and pancreas); I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease, an auto-immune disorder which involves an overactive thyroid and possibly a goiter (over-sized thyroid gland).
My endocrinologist explained that these blobs were actual nodules in my thyroidknown as cold nodules because they were not producing anything, just growths (as opposed to warm nodules). I had to undergo several ultrasound scans as well as I had the characteristic of most patients with Graves' Disease, a goiter (an oversized thyroid gland). After all this testing was done, I was pretty anxious for some answers, as you could imagine. Basically, I was told that I have three options. 1.) Medication to block the iodine from the thyroid and thus decrease production of
