March, 2005 (checked and updated the links, added an update to page 5 of this section) May 1997: I went to a doctor about feeling faint, dry eyes and weight loss. A series of blood tests showed that I was hyperthyroid. An appointment with a specialist was scheduled for October. I was given a prescription for Ativan, to take as needed, for 'anxiety attacks' which were really just rapid heartbeat reactions caused by the hyperthyroid symptoms. Five months is a very long time to be hyperthyroid with no treatment. Long term untreated hyperthyroidism can result in heart damage and more. If you have a hyperthyroid condition, don't delay getting it treated. I wouldn't have waited 5 months, if I'd had a choice. (This is what health 'cutbacks' do.)

Hyperthyroid Disease in Cats J. Kris Hankison, DVM
Stevens Point, WI
Hyperthyroid disease in cats is common and is usually discovered in older cats that lose weight, eat well, and seem otherwise healthy. Take a look at Hyperthyroidism in cats as explained by an experienced veterinarian... “Doctor, is there something wrong with my cat, Tigger? She's losing weight but she can’t be too sick because her appetite is terrific!” I encourage this concerned pet owner to bring Tigger in for an examination. Further questioning revealed some important clues to solving her health problem. The owner told me that Tigger has seemed restless for several months, wandering around the house at night, yowling and making a terrible racket. The owner also told me that Tigger has had occasional diarrhea and vomiting, and these symptoms have become more frequent. During the physical exam, several abnormal findings are noted. Tigger is very thin with a poor, dull haircoat. She is very anxious and restless on the exam table and her heart rate is very fast... more than 200 beats per minute! (average is 110 - 140 beats per minute.)

What is hyperthyroidism? Hyperthyroidism is the most common hormonal disease of cats resulting from secretion of excess thyroid hormone (T ). The average age of onset is 13 years of age. Thyroid hormone (T ) is responsible for regulating the metabolic rate of all cells in the body, which results in an overstimulation of nearly all organ systems. This overstimulation puts significant and ultimately fatal stresses on the body. How does hyperthydoidism affect my cat? 95% of hyperthyroid cats are classical in their presentation and exhibit some or all of the following: excessive appetite, weight loss, attitude changes, overactive, aggressive, tremors, increased vocalization, hair loss/unkept coat, excessive drinking, excessive urinating, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Feline Hyperthyroidism
by Susan Little DVM, Dipl ABVP (Feline) Hyperthyroidism (also called thyrotoxicosis) is one of the most common diseases of the middle-aged and older cat. It is a multi-system disorder caused by an increase in the amount of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) produced by an enlarged thyroid gland. It was first documented in cats almost 30 years ago but the cause of the disease has been elusive. Although the enlargement in the thyroid gland is caused by a tumor called an adenoma, it is non-cancerous. The most common clinical signs of hyperthyroidism in cats include weight loss, increased appetite (although some patients have decreased appetite), vomiting, increased thirst and urination, hyperactivity, and diarrhea. The high levels of thyroid hormones can cause the development of heart disease, and these patients may have a heart murmur, difficulty breathing, high heart rate and arrhythmias. Veterinarians will order a blood chemistry panel as well as a thyroid hormone (T4) level in cats suspected of being affected by this disease. It is important to evaluate the health of the other major organs, including the kidneys and heart in these patients. Typically, hyperthyroid cats may have elevations in their liver enzymes. Chest x-rays and cardiac ultrasound may reveal secondary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Generally, the cardiac changes will reverse when the hyperthyroidism is treated. In some cases, specific heart medication may be needed to stabilize cardiovascular health. In recent years, it has been recognized that many hyperthyroid cats have concurrent chronic kidney failure that is being masked by the effects of hyperthyroidism. It has also been found that treatments directed at curing hyperthyroidism in these patients could lead to a worsening of their kidney function.

Management of Endocrine Neoplasia Steven Withrow United States Managing common endocrine tumors constitutes significant effort in companion animal practice. The diagnosis of pituitary, thyroid and adrenal tumors in dogs and cats is often straightforward. Treatment, however, involves complex or controversial decisions and extensive post-treatment monitoring. Pituitary Neoplasia Pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) accounts for 80–85% of clinical hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) in dogs and cats and is due to a micro- or macroadenoma. Adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (AH) is due to a primary tumor of the adrenal cortex and is discussed below. The hypophyseal-pituitary-adrenal axis is systemically linked by long and short feedback mechanisms and therefore clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic management of HAC is likewise intricately linked between these endocrine organs. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and differentiation of PDH from AH has been thoroughly detailed in recent reviews and the clinical evaluation of companion animals with HAC has become a common skill of veterinarians. The predominant features in both dogs and cats include polyuria/polydipsia, alopecia, polyphagia, and nonspecific signs of lethargy and exercise intolerance. Most cats are also hyperglycemic and managed for insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus. Following effective management of HAC, insulin requirements often decline and a minority of cats with diabetes may no longer require insulin. Cats without concurrent diabetes mellitus still present with polyuria/polydipsia. Cats may have dermatologic involvement including fragile skin, recurrent pyoderma, and seborrhea.

Hortense the Hyperthyroid Cat
Hortense's owners noticed that their cat was eating more then ever but was losing weight. When they brought Hortense in to see us, she was skin and bones. She was bright and alert and very responsive. Her owners felt that she was very active and somewhat anxious when she was at home. Our examination showed a rapid heart rate and when we took her blood pressure, it was over 190. We consider 160 or under normal. We palpated the neck and we felt a bump on one side of the windpipe just below the larynx. This "bump" was an abnormally enlarged thyroid gland. We did a blood panel and found that Hortense's kidney function was normal, but there were some elevations in her liver enzymes and her thyroid level was 7 (normal thyroid levels in the cat should be under 3.5). Hortense was hyperthyroid. Hyperthyroidism has recently become a common ailment in cats. The thyroid glands become hyperactive and start producing more hormones than normal. This disease often increases the blood pressure, which can, over time, cause cardiac and renal damage. Thyroid hormones are directly related to the rate of metabolism. When the thyroid hormone level increases, so does the body's metabolism. Increased metabolism means increased food absorption, heart rate, blood pressure, and activity level, which would explain all of Hortense's symptoms.
