Fen Phen Recalled - Linked to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH)
The combination of the diet drugs Redux (dexfenfluramine), Pondimin (fenfluramine), and phentermine, also known as "fen phen", have been linked to severe, life-threatening heart and lung disease. Despite early questions about their safety, the manufacturer of the diet drugs, American Health Products (AHP, now a subsidiary of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) aggressively marketed the drugs. At the time the diet drug was approved in the US there were already 130 known cases in Europe of the rare and potentially life threatening disease, primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) linked to the diet drug combination. Despite these reports, the drug manufacturer fought against any requirement for a "black box" warning on their products. In a company memorandum, the drug manufacturer expressed concern that a "black box" warning" would reduce sales of their diet drugs by 50%. Unaware of the potential dangers of the drugs, more than 6 million people used the diet drug cocktail. The FDA also received reports showing a significant number of fen phen users had also developed the potentially life-threatening disease Primary Pulmonary Hypertension or PPH. The reports of heart valve damage and PPH prompted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to recommend that fen phen users get tested for heart or lung disease. The FDA continues to receive reports of heart valve damage and PPH among fen phen users. To date, the FDA has received reports of 123 deaths related to fen phen use.

UNDERSTANDING HYPERTENSION
Nearly one in four Americans has hypertension. Hypertension is a dangerous condition that may lead to heart attack, stroke or kidney failure. To help you control blood pressure, it's important to understand what blood pressure is, what causes it to rise, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent it.
Hypertension occurs when arterioles, small blood vessels that branch off from the arteries, become constricted making it difficult for blood to pass through them. As a result, blood pressure rises causing your heart to work harder. If your blood pressure at rest stays at 140/90 or more, you may have hypertension.
If you have hypertension, a physician can help you manage the condition effectively. Unfortunately, hypertension usually presents no clear symptoms. Some people may experience headaches or dizziness in the morning but, for most, there are no symptoms at all. The easiest and most reliable way to find out if you have hypertension is to have your blood pressure checked regularly.
RISK FACTORS
You may be at greater risk for high blood pressure if you:
  • Have a history of hypertension in your family.

Dear readers As you probably know, high blood pressure is one of he most important cardiovascular risk factor (as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and tobacco) all over the world. Several medical studies have demonstrated the relation between the knowledge of that cardiovascular risk factor and its management: the more the patients are informed and the best high blood pressure is managed. Quick Facts...
  • Calories and body weight go hand in hand. Excess body fat leads to an increased risk of health problems. Potassium has an important role in blood pressure treatment. Low calcium intake may increase risk of hypertension. Excessive sodium intake is linked with high blood pressure or hypertension in some people. Dietary recommendations suggest avoiding too much sodium. The suggested range is 1,100 to 3,300 mg per day. Table salt is 40 percent sodium. One teaspoon has about 2,000 mg sodium.
Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects one in four adults in the United States. Another 25 percent of adults have blood pressure readings considered to be on the high end of normal.
Your blood pressure is the force exerted on your artery walls by the blood flowing through your body. A blood pressure reading provides two measures, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure, which are expressed as millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), or how high the pressure of blood would raise a column of mercury. Systolic pressure is measured as the heart pumps. Diastolic pressure is measured between beats, as blood flows back into the heart.

Blood is carried from the heart to all parts of your body in vessels called arteries. Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries. Each time the heart beats (about 60-70 times a minute at rest), it pumps out blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is at its highest when the heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When the heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure.
Blood pressure is always given as these two numbers, the systolic and diastolic pressures. Both are important. Usually they are written one above or before the other, such as 120/80 mmHg. The top number is the systolic and the bottom the diastolic. When the two measurements are written down, the systolic pressure is the first or top number, and the diastolic pressure is the second or bottom number (for example, 120/80). If your blood pressure is 120/80, you say that it is "120 over 80."
Blood pressure changes during the day. It is lowest as you sleep and rises when you get up. It also can rise when you are excited, nervous, or active.

http://www.rjmatthewsmd.com/Definitions/pulmonary_hypertension.htm
Pulmonary Hypertension TREATMENT OF PRIMARY PULMONARY
HYPERTENSION - THE NEXT GENERATION PRIMARY pulmonary hypertension predominantly affects women, frequently in the prime of life, and usually leads to death from right ventricular failure within a few years after diagnosis. It is a vascular disease but is oddly confined to the small pulmonary arterioles, where intimal fibrosis and medial hypertrophy lead sequentially to vascular obstruction, elevated pulmonary vascular resistance, pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular overload. Coagulation at the endothelial surface contributes to obstruction, and thromboembolism may occur as a secondary event. The right ventricle compensates through hypertrophy, and although it can sustain function at high pressures for months to years, decompensation is ultimately manifested in reduced cardiac output and the development of peripheral edema. Many conditions and diseases lead to similar pulmonary vascular lesions and clinical outcomes, including the scleroderma spectrum of diseases, human immunodeficiency virus infection, liver disease, and the use of certain anorectic drugs. These illnesses, along with primary pulmonary hypertension, are now classified as types of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
