I have been diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia after a battery of tests on my heart because of tachycardia episodes. A glucose tolerance was done and 1 hour after a 100g glucose charge, my levels were normal. I don't know very much about this condition but I have a few questions.
My brief history: 19 y/o male. Overweight. Cholesterol normal 120 LDL. No diabetes / previous medical problems.
1. I have read that this may be caused by cancer of the pancreas. Would there be a low chance of that in me considering my only symptom was tachycardia? No weight change, no seizures, headaches, etc.
2. What tests would be recommended in order to rule out any other problems of the pancreas?
3. Is it likely that this condition could be caused simply by being overweight?

ABSTRACT Background Prospective studies suggest that hyperinsulinemia may be an important risk factor for ischemic heart disease. However, it has not been determined whether plasma insulin levels are independently related to ischemic heart disease after adjustment for other risk factors, including plasma lipoprotein levels. Methods In 1985 we collected blood samples from 2103 men from suburbs of Quebec City, Canada, who were 45 to 76 years of age and who did not have ischemic heart disease. A first ischemic event (angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, or death from coronary heart disease) occurred in 114 men (case patients) between 1985 and 1990. Each case patient was matched for age, body-mass index, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption with a control selected from among the 1989 men who remained free of ischemic heart disease during follow-up. However, the criteria for excluding case patients and controls with "diabetes mellitus" were not well clarified. Many of the subjects with elevated insulin levels in the fasting state may have had undiagnosed type II diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes) and would have been excluded had more rigorous criteria for diabetes been applied. It would have been valuable to measure glycosylated hemoglobin levels in all subjects to exclude Full Text of this Article References

Abstract Although there is evidence that variations in insulin action are under genetic regulation, probably as much as 50% of the variability in insulin-mediated glucose disposal within a population of normal volunteers is secondary to difference in life-style. In this context, obesity and decreased physical activity play particularly crucial roles, each contributing approximately equally to the variability in insulin-mediated glucose disposal seen in the population at large. It is also worth noting that powerful ethnic differences exist, with essentially every other ethnic group studied being more insulin resistant than individuals of European ancestry. Insulin resistance

Background: Intensive insulin therapy in critically ill patients reduces morbidity and mortality. The current study elucidates whether acute hyperinsulinemia per se could attenuate the systemic cytokine response and improve neutrophil function during endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide)-induced systemic inflammation in a porcine model. Methods: Pigs were anesthetized, mechanically ventilated, randomized into four groups, and followed for 570 min: group 1 (anesthesia solely, n = 10), group 2 (hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp [HEC], n = 9), group 3 (lipopolysaccharide, n = 10), group 4 (lipopolysaccharide-HEC, n = 9). Groups 3 and 4 were given a 180-min infusion of lipopolysaccharide (total, 10 [mu]g/kg). Groups 2 and 4 were clamped (p-glucose: 5 mm/l, insulin 0.6 mU [middle dot] kg-1 [middle dot] min-1) throughout the study period. Changes in pulmonary and hemodynamic function, circulating cytokines, free fatty acids, glucagon, and neutrophil chemotaxis were monitored.

Persistent Hyperinsulinemia Hypoglycemia of Infancy Topic Tree Definition:
A form of nontransient HYPOGLYCEMIA, unique to infancy, due to autosomal recessive mutations of the sulfonylurea receptor gene on CHROMOSOME 11. Defects in the sulfonylurea receptors (ATP-BINDING CASSETTE TRANSPORTERS) on the PANCREATIC BETA CELLS prevent negative feedback of GLUCOSE-regulated INSULIN release thus resulting in HYPERINSULINEMIA. Lori, I have PCOD and I am hyperglycemic, I don’t know if hyperglycemic is anything close to hyperinsulinemia. But I am on an injection called Zoladex this is suppose to let you know if a hysterectomy will work for you. I have been on this medicine since February and I love it. I have since changed my mind and have decided that I will take the injection until my insurance stops paying for the medicine. At that time I will have a hysterectomy. This injection is also giving me time to do more research on the PCOD and make sure a hysterectomy is really what needs to be done. The injection cost about $500.00 for one month and $1500.00 for three. Make sure to do research on the injection if you want to do it though, there is a lot of information out there under a search engine (i.e. http://www.ask.com
