7 March 2005
Are there days on which for no apparent reason you sweat way more than usual? I had one of those days yesterday. It was so extreme that I'm temporarily breaking my writing hiatus to report about it here. Yesterday was our first spring-like day of the year. It dawned mild and the weather guys said temps would be near 70. Now, I know what you're thinking, "Janet, the warm weather made you sweat more." I don't think that's it because I was indoors most of the day where the heat was turned off. I decided to celebrate the spring by wearing a pretty lavender silk blouse over which I pulled on a coordinating sweater. Yes, I know, not the best thing for someone with HH to wear, but I'm determined not to let my sweating control my life and tell me what I can and cannot do. As I prepared to leave the house for work I saw the temperature was already near 60, so I realized the sweater had to go. After taking it off, I checked my hair in the mirror and saw I had already sprouted large wet stains under my arms. That should have been a warning sign. It's not uncommon that my pits are damp before I even get out of the house, but usually it's only a little. I should have donned my comfywear undershirt, or worn something else, but I didn't. Instead I used the ol' blow drier trick as the girls in this picture seem happy to demonstrate, and headed out the door. But when I got to the office, I had soaked through again, and now the dark wet circles were even larger.

Millions of People Suffer from Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is a condition of excessive sweating. This is a medical condition caused by an overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system of the sweat glands. The only effective medical treatment for severe hyperhidrosis is a surgical procedure called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy or, ETS. This operation can now be performed safely as an outpatient, same-day procedure. There is very little bleeding involved, which reduces recovery time, minimizes scarring, and contributes to less post-operative pain. Patients enjoy quality results, immediately! People come from around the world to the Hyperhidrosis Center to consult with experts in the cure of hyperhidrosis . There are four major types of hyperhidrosis: palmar hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms)

Questions and Answers About Hyperhidrosis
Q. What is hyperhidrosis?
A.
Hyperhidrosis is a disorder of the eccrine, or sweat, glands. Sweating is the way your body naturally cools itself off. But people with hyperhidrosis have excessive sweatingusually on the palms, the soles of their feet, or in their underarm area.
Q. What causes hyperhidrosis?
A.
The causes of hyperhidrosis are not understood. The condition occurs daily, often without provocation. It can be worsened by stress, anxiety, a warm environment, and physical activity.
Q. Is hyperhidrosis a genetic disorder?
A.
Experts aren't sure. But a study in the Journal of Vascular Surgery indicates that palmar hyperhidrosis may be due to genetic factors. While more research is still needed, experts agree that excessive sweating is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body to cope with stressful situations. Normally, this system helps the body with its "fight or flight" responses. But in people with hyperhidrosis, something goes wrong and excessive sweating is the result.

Introduction Not many people know what hyperhidrosis means or even what is it. Not even I until I found out what it was. After I found out what it was, I was one of its victims. This is something that you do not want to have nor is it a good thing.
For an average human being, the body perspires to regulate the body from overheating. For others, there is a condition called hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is defined as abnormal excessive sweating. To give you an idea what hyperhidrosis is, under hyperhidrosis condition, a person would sweat more than what is really needed to cool the body down. Additional to this, the person can also sweat when the body doesn't need to cool down - the body can sweat anytime it feels like it, even if it's already cool, which is a major problem. Hyperhidrosis is traced back to hereditary, as in a family member having such condition.
Hyperhidrosis can happen anywhere in the body, but excessive sweating are found at the palm of each hands, the sole of the feet, armpits, and the face. The hyperhidrosis condition is not temporary. I had hyperhidrosis for about 7 years (1995-2001) and I doubt it'll ever stop in days, months, or many years down the road of my life if I never had surgery.

Hyperhidrosis
Medical Author: Alan Rockoff, M.D.
Medical Editor: Frederick Hecht, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.M.G. What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating , is a common disorder which produces a lot of unhappiness. An estimated 2-3% of Americans suffer from excessive sweating of the underarms ( axillary hyperhidrosis ) or of the palms and soles of the feet palmoplantar hyperhidrosis .) Underarm problems tend to start in late adolescence, while palm and sole sweating often begins earlier, around the age 13 (on the average). Untreated, these problems may continue throughout life. Sweating is embarrassing, it stains clothes, ruins romance, and complicates business and social interactions. Severe cases can have serious practical consequences as well, making it hard for people who suffer from it to hold a pen, grip a car steering wheel, or shake hands. What is the cause of hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is a common disorder affecting many people. Palmar hyperhidrosis or sweaty palms is the most common form of hyperhidrosis, causing excessive sweating of the hands. Hyperhidrosis can also cause excessive foot, underarm and facial sweating. It is thought that hyperhidrosis is a result of over activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Sweating is often uncontrollable, embarrassing and not anticipated . Normal sweating is needed for thermal regulation however in people suffering from hyperhidrosis, sweating exceeds the bodys need for physiological thermal regulation. Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the body sweats excessively and inappropriately. Usually this sweating happens for little or no reason and can be so profuse as to dominate the sufferer's life because of the amount of wetness produced. It is not the same as the excessive sweating which occurs in association with medical conditions such thyrotoxicosis or carcinoid syndrome, and it is not the same as the hot flushes which occur during a woman's menopause.

Summary Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating from the palms and soles, is often an embarrassing and disabling condition that afflicts individuals of all ages. Diagnosis is usually evident based upon the history and visible signs of sweating. Treatment of this condition has proven to be difficult; however, numerous treatment options are now available. The therapeutic armamentarium includes topical and systemic agents, iontophoresis, botulinum toxin injections, and sympathectomy, all of which will be discussed.
Introduction
Diagnosis is evident by the history and visible signs of sweating. Many patients complain of social embarrassment and work-related disability due to palmoplantar hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately, this condition has not been easy to treat. Fortunately, many treatment options, including topical and systemic agents, iontophoresis, botulinum toxin injections, and sympathectomy, are now available.
Treatment
Therapy can be challenging both for patient and physician. Fortunately, numerous medical, surgical and electrical treatment options are now available. Treatment may require visualization of the affected area, which may be accomplished by the iodine starch test (spraying the area with a mixture of 0.5 to 1 gram of iodine crystals and 500 grams of soluble starch). The treatment options include topical and systemic medications, iontophoresis, injections of botulinum toxin, and sympathectomy:
