http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/nervous system disorders/hydrocephalus.htm
What is hydrocephalus? With hydrocephalus there is an abnormal build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in cavities ( the ventricles) in the brain. The resulting increased pressure on the brain causes the clinical signs that occur with this condition. Hydrocephalus can be primary (congenital ) - the animal is born with the condition, or secondary - the condition is acquired later in life due to some disease process that blocks normal drainage of the CSF. The primary form, discussed here, is seen most often in brachycephalic (dogs with a shortened head) and toy breeds. How is hydrocephalus inherited? The mode of inheritance is unknown, but there is a predisposition to this condition in the breeds listed below. What breeds are affected by hydrocephalus Toy breeds - Cairn terrier, chihuahua, Maltese, Manchester terrier, pomeranian, toy poodle, Yorkshire terrier - and brachycephalic breeds - Boston terrier, English bulldog, Lhasa apso, Pekingese, Shih tzu For many breeds and many disorders, the studies to determine the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed have not been carried out, or are inconclusive. We have listed breeds for which there is a consensus among those investigating in this field and among veterinary practitioners, that the condition is significant in this breed. What does hydrocephalus Puppies with severe hydrocephalus often die at a very early age due to pressure from the increased fluid in the brain. In other less severely affected pups, the signs gradually become apparent over the first few months of life, and in some mild cases the condition is only diagnosed later in life.

    Kori 1997
I wanted to create a place for loved ones to come and learn a little more about hydrocephalus. My oldest daughter, Kori, has hydrocephalus. She is now 5 years old. She was diagnosed when I took her in for her 2-month well baby check-up. She was shunted the following morning at The Children's Hospital, in Denver, Colorado. When she was an infant, I would have given anything to know what to expect from her as she grew up. Nobody told us that she may be developmentally delayed or that she would be at risk for learning disabilities. I have learned so much in the past few years, that I would hope that I could help somebody else. Above all, I just want everybody to know that Hydrocephalus is not a death sentence. Children are amazingly resilient, and with a lot of love, patience, and hard work, children with hydrocephalus can grow to achieve great things! So, sit back, check out my links to other hydrocephalus sites, read Kori's story, but most of all check out the links to the personal web pages. Upon them you will meet some amazing children! Don't forget to sign my guest book! Thanks!!!!!!!!!
These were both taken when she was 2 mos old. This is how she looked 5 days before she had her

A personal story of the hope and courage of a young woman's struggles against hydrocephalus and over 40 shunt revisions.

Melissa's Journey
A Story of Hope and Courage.
This page is to introduce you to my daughter Melissa,
she is 18 years old and a junior at our local High School.
She likes music, videos and she loves little children
especially babies. She dreams of the day she will become
a mother. This all sounds pretty normal I guess but
the part of her life that we want people to know about and
possibly help with is she has also had 40 shunt revisions
for a condition she has called hydrocephalus
She also has cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder,
and is developmentally delayed. Melissa has not been one of the lucky ones that normal medical treatment works for, no one understands exactly why (and we have been to many doctors, some of the best in the east). Melissa's joumey started at birth when she was born 8 weeks too soon, she developed spinal meningitis at birth and because of the meningitis and respiratory distress she was suffering she developed seizures at 3 days old. Her first 6 weeks of life were spend in the neonatal intensive care unit as we all waited and prayed she would continue to survive another day. In those first weeks we had no idea what we were up against and all we wanted was to be able to have our beautiful daughter live. We would deal with whatever else we had to as time went on. She was able to leave the hospital when she was six weeks old but we only had her home for three days before we found out she would be going back four days later to have a shunt placed to treat the hydrocephalus that had began before she was even discarded from the hospital.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
ADULT HYDROCEPHALUS PROGRAM
ADULT HYDROCEPHALUS DIAGNOSES INDEX What is normal pressure hydrocephalus? NPH is a disorder usually involving the elderly that presents primarily with difficulty in walking. The difficulty has been described as a "magnetic gait," one in which the patient feels that his or her feet are stuck to the floor as if there were magnets on the soles of their shoes. A person with NPH usually has problems initiating their gait - typically having to take many tiny steps in order to get going and/or if trying to stop. If severe, the patient may be completely unable to walk and be confined to a wheelchair. The second common feature of NPH is impaired bladder control. Early on, the most common complaint is urgency - having to rush to the bathroom as soon as the urge is felt. Later in the disease, urinary incontinence may develop. Declining short -term memory is the third feature of NPH. The degree of forgetfulness is above that normally attributed to aging. If advanced, the patient can become quite demented which may make the diagnosis difficult to distinguish from Alzheimer's Disease. The above three findings are commonly referred to as the "clinical triad" of NPH: 1) Gait disorder, 2) urinary incontinence, and 3) dementia. In some cases, patients with NPH can present with signs and symptoms mimicking Parkinson's disease. It should be noted that NPH is in many ways very different from hydrocephalus that begins in childhood. The symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options are different for children, and therefore caution should be taken when reading about hydrocephalus in general at other sites.

Signs and Symptoms The most common cause of congenital hydrocephalus is obstruction of the cerebral aqueduct   the long, narrow passageway between the third and fourth ventricle or cavity of the brain. This condition may result from a blockage, infection, hemorrhage, tumor or arachnoid cyst. Other medical problems associated with this form of hydrocephalus are:
  • Chiari malformations , an abnormality at the base of brain where the spinal column joins the skull Craniosynostosis, when the bones in the skull fuse together before the brain has stopped growing Dandy-Walker syndrome, when the fourth ventricle is enlarged because of partial or complete closure of its outlets Hydranencephaly, a rare condition in which the brain's cerebral hemispheres are absent and replaced by sacs filled with cerebrospinal fluid Neural tube defects or spina bifida, when the spinal cord is exposed at birth and is often lacking cerebrospinal fluid Schizencephaly, an extremely rare disorder characterized by abnormal slits, or clefts, in the brain's cerebral hemispheres

Other Resources Hydrocephalus Print Format Hydrocephalus from the Greek word for water (hydro) and head (cephalus) occurs when abnormal amounts of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulate in the brain's cavities, called subarachnoid space. Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, colorless liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, protecting them from injury. It carries nutrients to the brain and spinal cord and takes away waste. In a healthy person, the amount of this fluid produced by the brain is absorbed by the body. In hydrocephalus, the fluid fails to drain and accumulates, leading to pressure on the brain.  A build-up of this fluid may result from one of three reasons:
  • Too much CSF is being produced, a condition known as choroid plexus papilloma. The flow of CSF through the cerebrospinal system is blocked. The brain is not reabsorbing enough of the fluid.
Hydrocephalus may be congenital caused by a brain malformation or birth defect affecting one out of every 1,000 newborns or acquired , occuring after birth when a tumor, injury or disease blocks the absorption of cerebrospinal fluid.

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. Although hydrocephalus was once known as "water on the brain". The "water" is actually cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) - a clear fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The excessive accumulation of CSF results in an abnormal dilation of the spaces in the brain called ventricles. This dilation causes potentially harmful pressure on the tissues of the brain. What are the different types of hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus
Definition
Hydrocephalus is an abnormal expansion of cavities (ventricles) within the brain caused by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid. Description
Hydrocephalus is the result of an imbalance between the formation and drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Approximately 500 milliliters (about a pint) of CSF is formed within the brain each day, by structures called choroid plexus, with epidermal cells lining chambers called ventricles. Once formed, CSF usually circulates among all the ventricles before it is absorbed and returned to the circulatory system. The normal adult volume of circulating CSF is 150 ml, so that the CSF turn-over rate is more than three times per day. Production is independent of absorption, and reduced absorption causes CSF to accumulate within the ventricles. Reduced absorption most often occurs when one or more passages connecting the ventricles become blocked, preventing movement of CSF to its drainage sites in the subarachnoid space just inside the skull. This type of hydrocephalus is called "noncommunicating." Reduction in absorption rate can also be caused by damage to the absorptive tissue. This type is called "communicating hydrocephalus." Both of these types lead to an elevation of the CSF pressure within the brain. This increased pressure squeezes the soft tissues of the brain, distorting and damaging them. In infants whose skull bones have not yet fused, the intracranial pressure is partly relieved by expansion of the skull, so that symptoms may not be as dramatic. Both types of elevated-pressure hydrocephalus may occur from infancy to adulthood.

Hydrocephalus What is hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. The fluid (the CSF) is often under increased pressure which can compress (squeeze) and damage the brain. Hydrocephalus is sometimes familiarly called "water on the brain." (The word "hydrocephalus" in Greek literally means "watery head.") When does hydrocephalus occur?
