Aids and Hughes Syndrome
Dr. Vilardell, Barcelona.
The discovery of the condition came from careful clinical observation. Whilst treating patients with a condition called Lupus, Dr Hughes noted that some of his Lupus patients had a tendency to blood clots, to headaches (and even strokes) and, in pregnancy, to clotting of the placenta and miscarriage. without Hughes Syndrome
Between 1983 and 1986, Dr Hughes and his team published a series of reports describing in great clinical detail the spectrum of the syndrome, including migraine, DVT, strokes, movement disorder, spinal cord lesions, organ thrombosis including brain, heart, brain, kidney, liver and lung as well as the occasional abnormalities in blood platelet count, and of course, the all important tendency to miscarriage.

Early signs of this disease are often diagnosed as many different disorders before being correctly diagnosed. This inability to correctly diagnose is not due to any form of medical inefficiency, but is due to the disease only being recognised in the last 9 years, and it's ability to mimic the symptoms of a number of well known and documented diseases. Even though I have a clinical diagnosis of APLS, wear an SOS Talisman bracelet and carry a medical fact card on me, in an emergency the Accident and Emergency doctors still insist on treating the possibly catastrophic events as a Migraine. I hope this site will help to raise the awareness of many doctors and health care professionals, and give help and the comfort of understanding the problems to patients and their families.

Printing Help What is Hughes syndrome? Hughes syndrome, also known as antiphospholipid syndrome or 'sticky blood' is a disorder characterized by blood clotting, both in the arteries and veins. What causes Hughes Syndrome? Hughes syndrome is caused by the presence of antibodies in the blood, called antiphospholipid antibodies. These antibodies make the immune system work too hard, increasing blood clotting. Blood clotting can affect anyone of any age and can happen suddenly e.g. leg thrombosis or over a number of years. For more information on deep vein thrombosis (DVT) click here What are the symptoms of Hughes Syndrome? In some people the only symptom of Hughes syndrome is recurrent miscarriage (often late in pregnancy). This is due to small clots affecting the placenta , preventing vital nutrients getting to the growing baby. However, other symptoms could include any of the following:

Hughes Syndrome
Edited by M. A. Khamashta In1983 Dr Graham Hughes (one of the editors) described a syndrome in which the blood has a tendency to clot - now often called "sticky blood syndrome" or Hughes Syndrome. Hughes Syndrome addresses the complete range of conditions produced by this common disorder which is also known as antiphospholipid Syndrome. Hughes Syndrome is at the root of diverse conditions such as stroke, leg vein thrombosis and recurrent abortion. It is easily prevented and treated using commonly available drugs including low-dose aspirin. This book fulfils the need for a cross-disciplinary clinical textbook and contains contributions from the leading international authorities. £60.00 September 2000 352 pages ISBN 1-85233-232-8. Hughes syndrome (or sticky blood syndrome or, more technically, antiphospholipid syndrome) is an important cause of blood clotting problems and accounts for as many as one in five cases of recurrent miscarriage. Hughes syndrome may be to blame in some cases of economy class syndrome It's linked to an increased risk of vein thrombosis, including blood clots in the legs such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Hughes syndrome may be to blame in some cases of economy class syndrome, which has lead to the deaths of young people travelling on long-haul flights. There's also a great risk of more dangerous arterial thrombosis, including strokes and heart attacks. One in five cases of stroke in young people (under 45) is associated with Hughes syndrome. (For more information on stroke, contact The Stroke Association ). Others are misdiagnosed as having multiple sclerosis because of similar brain symptoms.

Living with Hughes Syndrome "Hughes syndrome ('sticky blood') is a common if little known condition in which blood is prone to thickening and clotting. Despite the fact that Hughes syndrome can be identified with a simple test and treated easily, many people have not received the help they need because the condition is not well known. In clear, straightforward language, Triona Holden explains what 'sticky blood' is, its symptoms and treatment. The chapters are illustrated with moving stories of those who have struggled to live with the syndrome and whose lives were transformed once it was diagnosed." Contents
