Lymphoma What is lymphoma? Briefly, lymphomas result when DNA damage or changes occurs to an immune cell (a lymphocyte) that alters the behavior of the cells.
The damage to DNA results in the abnormal production of proteins that prevents the cells from dying when they should, or causes sustained rapid cell division that produces more of its kind.
These malignant cells then may accumulate to form tumors that may enlarge the lymph nodes or spread to other areas of the lymphatic system , such as the spleen or bone marrow.
Lymphoma can also spread or first appear outside the lymphatic system and is called extranodal disease.

In his own words: living with Hodgkins disease
Three years ago at age 39, Rob* was diagnosed with Hodgkins disease. Fortunately, it was detected in the early stages and was aggressively treated with chemotherapy and radiation. He continues to get good reports at his follow-up visits and has returned to his active lifestyle with his wife and four children. Rob is in sales, and enjoys biking, hiking, and just being outdoors. What was your first sign that something was wrong? What symptoms did you experience? I was driving in my car when a bug flew in the window and hit me on the neck. As I brushed it away, I felt a bump. Another thing was that I was always so exhausted. However, the tiredness was such a gradual thing; I didnt really associate it with something being wrong. For two years I had a rash in the middle of my chest that I thought was just dry skin. I didnt realize these were warning signs for what turned out to be Hodgkins disease. What was the diagnosis experience like?

Hodgkins Disease
by Debra Wood, RN Hodgkin's disease, also referred to as Hodgkins lymphoma, is a cancer of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system helps protect the body against infection and disease. It consists of a network of lymph vessels and small structures that are called lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are located throughout the body. The Lymphatic Organs www.nucleusinc.com Hodgkins disease is a specific form of lymphoma. Lymphoma occurs when lymph cells divide without control or order. If cells keep dividing uncontrollably, a mass of tissue forms, called a growth or tumor. The term cancer refers to malignant tumors, which can invade nearby tissues and can spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor does not invade or spread. The cause of Hodgkin's lymphoma remains unknown. Hodgkins disease usually starts in lymph nodes or lymphatic tissue and from there has the potential to spread throughout the body Hodgkins lymphoma is one of the most curable types of cancer. People with localized Hodgkins are cured more than 90% of the time. About 7,400 Americans are diagnosed with Hodgkins disease each year, which represents about 8% of all lymphomas.

Adult Hodgkin's Lymphoma
(Also called Hodgkin's Disease)
Hodgkin's Lymphoma or Hodgkin's Disease (two terms for the same thing) is a malignant (cancerous) growth of cells in the lymph system . Hodgkin's Disease is the better known form of lymphoma (the other lymphomas are grouped into what is called the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas The incidence or number of cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma (about 7880 cases, 4330 men and 3550 women in the United States this year) is significant although less than the number of cases of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (over 53,000 in the US this year). More on Hodgkin's incidence Hodgkin's has a long and rich history . The disease was named after Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866), a English scholar and Quaker physician working at Guy's Hospital in England. Lymphatic disease was first described in 1666 by Malpighi although it was in Hodgkin's 1832 paper On Some Morbid Appearances of the Absorbent Glands and Spleen that cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma were well documented. Hodgkin's name was attached to the disease in 1865 in a paper by Wilks.

Hodgkin's disease , (also called Hodgkin's lymphoma), is a cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue includes the lymph nodes and related organs that are part of the body's immune and blood-forming systems. The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs located underneath the skin in the neck, underarm, and groin. Lymph nodes are also found inside the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Hodgkin's disease is not contagious. You can't "catch" this disease from another person. What are Lymph nodes? Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes . They are connected throughout the body by lymph vessels (narrow tubes similar to blood vessels). Lymph vessels carry a clear, watery fluid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes. Eventually the lymphatic fluid is emptied into the blood vessels in the left upper chest. The lymph nodes are a part of a larger system called the the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system includes the spleen, the bone marrow, and the thymus.

Ethan was feeling down. All of his friends were going to the big game and he couldn't join them. It wasn't because he'd been grounded or because his family had other plans. The problem was more serious than that: Ethan has a type of cancer called Hodgkin's disease. Because Hodgkin's disease affects the body's ability to fight infection, Ethan hasn't been out in crowds for a while. He's only allowed to go to appointments with his doctors and make brief visits to the library. But despite Ethan's disappointment, he knows he can look forward to the future. His support team of doctors, nurses, friends, and family members has helped him come a long way. Soon he'll be able to do all of the cool things he's missed. What Is Hodgkin's Disease?
Hodgkin's disease is a type of lymphoma. Lymphoma (say: lim- foh -mah) is cancer of the lymphatic system and is the third most common type of cancer in kids and teens ages 10 to 14. But it is still very rare for kids to get it. The lymphatic system is the system in the body that is responsible for fighting off infections and keeping you healthy. It's made up of your tonsils, spleen, bone marrow, and chains of lymph nodes (rounded masses of tissues found throughout the body). Although many types of cancer can spread to the lymph system, lymphoma actually begins in the cells of the lymph system itself.

One day while shaving, Justin noticed a lump on the side of his neck. He didn't think much of it at first, assuming it would go away. But after a week, the lump was still there, so Justin went to see the doctor. Justin was a little surprised at the questions his doctor asked. Had Justin lost weight? Was he easily tired? Did he ever get night sweats? As Justin answered yes to these questions, he wondered what they had to do with the lump on his neck. The doctor explained that the lump was a swollen lymph node and that he wanted to monitor it closely. He prescribed antibiotics because swollen lymph nodes are often caused by infections. But when the medicine did not decrease the swelling in the lymph node, Justin's doctor recommended some tests. The doctor told Justin and his mother that the test was necessary to check for disease, including lymphoma. What Is Hodgkin's Disease?
Hodgkin's disease is a type of cancer called a lymphoma , which is a cancer of the lymphatic system. (The disease is sometimes also referred to as Hodgkin's lymphoma). Like other cancers, lymphomas occur when cells divide too much and too fast. Growth control is lost, and the lymphatic cells may overcrowd, invade, and destroy lymphoid tissues and metastasize (spread) to other organs. There are two general types of lymphomas: "Hodgkin's Disease" (named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first recognized it in 1832) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The lymphatic tissue in Hodgkin's disease contains specific cells - Reed-Sternberg cells - that are not found in any other cancerous lymphomas or cancers. These cells distinguish Hodgkin's disease (HD) from non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs). Anatomy The lymphatic system - the target of lymphomas - includes the lymph nodes and other organs that make up the immune and blood-forming (hematopoietic) elements of the body.

This National Cancer Institute (NCI) booklet (NIH Publication No. 99-1555) is intended to help people with Hodgkin's disease and their families and friends better understand this type of cancer. We hope others will read it as well to learn more about this disease. This booklet discusses symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. It also has information about resources and sources of support for people with Hodgkin's disease. Cancer research has led to real progress against Hodgkin's disease increased survival rates and improved quality of life. Most people diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease can now be cured, or their disease can be controlled for many years. Continuing research offers hope that, in the future, even more people with this disease will be treated successfully. Each achievement in laboratories and clinics brings researchers closer to the eventual control of Hodgkin's disease.
