Overview As many as one in five people experiences acute hives or angioedema at one time or another. HAE affects only about 6,000 people in the United States. In most cases, hives and angioedema are harmless and leave no lasting marks. The common treatment is medications. Serious angioedema can be life-threatening if swelling causes your throat or tongue to block your airway and leads to loss of consciousness.

I'm sure most people understand how gardening is a calming activity, but I'm also sure that many people can't see how beekeeping could be considered to "stress-relieving". Let's just say that no one really wants to bother me when I'm working with my bees! P lease feel free to browse around the site and see what I do after a long day in the office to wind down. It may not be an exciting life, but it keeps me happy. Notes:

    Revised 1 February 2003
IMPORTANT The information provided is of a general nature and should not be used as a substitute for professional advice. If you think you may suffer from an allergic or other disease that requires attention, you should discuss it with your family doctor. What are hives?
Hives (also known as urticaria) look like mosquito bites. They range from the size of a pinhead to that of a dinner plate. Although some unlucky individuals can have them every day for weeks, individual lumps usually go in minutes to hours. In most people, hives are not due to allergy. How common are hives?
Approximately 1 in 6 people will develop hives some time during their life and are most common in children. They eventually disappear in most people. They may reappear following infection, when under stress or for no particular reason. Hives occur in the skin
Underneath the lining of the skin, gut, lungs, nose and eyes are mast cells. These are designed to kill worms and parasites. Mast cells are like "land-mines", and contain "bags" filled with irritant chemicals including histamine. When these are released in small amounts, they cause local itch and irritation. In larger amounts, they will cause fluid to leak out of blood vessels, resulting in swelling of the skin. Occasionally, hives may not be itchy at all.

    M. T. Sanford There continues to be a great deal of interest from a variety of people in using observation bee hives. This is not surprising. The observation hive is one of the premier research and educational tools in apiculture. It can also be used as an adjunct to a diversity of public relations and selling programs. Although its allure is universal, the observation bee hive may not always be the best choice of exhibit. This is because a great deal of time and energy is needed to set up a hive and keep it going. Most persons have few problems installing an observation hive for the first time. The headache is maintaining the unit. This is especially true if the hive is to be used as a permanent display for the general public. Unfortunately, there is very little that is permanent about an observation bee hive without a lot of work on somebody's part. Even the largest units of 4 frames still only represent a portion of a full-sized colony. Because they are so small, observation hives do not usually survive major fluctuations in either population size or food availability. Anybody who has attempted to keep one of these marginal colonies for any length of time can draw up a long laundry list of potential problems. These can include swarming, queenlessness, starvation, and invasion by diseases, pests and parasites.

    Nonprescription medication for hives
By Dr. Sanjay Gupta CNN Your Health ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) This week I've been in surgery three times. Two of my patients were brought in as a result of accidents on the road: one in a car, the other on a motorcycle. It made me think about how important it is for all of us to be extra careful on the road, especially as we approach the high-travel summer season. I can't express strongly enough how critical it is to wear a seat belt, and a helmet when riding any kind of bike or motorcycle. We can reduce our risks by taking responsibility for our own health. This includes carefully considering any medications or supplements we might take, evaluating and modifying our diets for optimum health, getting regular checkups and keeping an open dialogue with our doctors. Here are some health stories I thought you would find interesting:

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Colds, aches, pains, and other ailments Hives? Originally Published: December 03, 1993 Dear Alice, What about hives? Signed, Itchy Dear Itchy, Hives are one of many of your body's inflammatory responses to an allergen. Allergic reactions are a response of the immune system, but actually an inappropriate response that is usually perceived as annoying, and occasionally can be life-threatening. Your body recognizes a relatively harmless substance, such as dust, pollen, animal hair, or a type of food, as a dangerous antigen and mounts an immune response to it. The accompanying inflammation can be in the form of hives, asthma, itchy eyes, vomiting, etc. Though allergies certainly involve physiological and immunological responses in the body, many believe they are also strongly associated with a person's emotional and psychic state. Sometimes, skin eruptions may be a sign of "itching to get away" from something or someone. This is not to suggest that the allergy is not real, but that the causes are complex and lie as much within us as in what we are exposed to in the environment. So in looking for the cause of your own hives, make sure you look at foods, dust, air quality, etc., as well as how you are feeling your mind-body balance.

    Urticaria
Urticaria refers to a group of disorders in which red patches and weals occur in the skin. The release of chemicals from mast cells in the skin causes small blood vessels to leak and results in tissue swelling. The weals can be a few millimetres or several centimetres in diameter, coloured white or red, often surrounded by a red flare, and frequently itchy. Each weal may last a few minutes or several hours, and may change shape. Weals may be round, or form rings, a map-like pattern or giant patches. The surface weals may be accompanied by deeper swelling of eyelids, lips, hands and elsewhere. The swelling is called angioedema . Angioedema may occur with or without urticarial weals (10%).
    Angioedema Urticaria
    Generalised urticaria
Generalized urticaria (hives) is often classified according to how long it has been present.
    • Acute urticaria is of recent onset (hours, days or a few weeks).

  • What Is It? Hives, also called urticaria, are rounded or oval bumps (swellings) on the skin that often are itchy. Sometimes they are red, but they don't have to be. Hives happen when the cells in the skin called mast cells release histamine, a chemical that causes tiny blood vessels (capillaries) to leak fluid. When this leaking fluid accumulates in the skin, it forms the small swellings that we recognize as hives.
