Women with hirsutism who find mechanical removal and local treatments ineffective have several off-label medical options, Dr. Anne Lucky said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in Washington, D.C. Hirsutism stemming from hyperandrogenism often can be lessened by competitive inhibitors of the androgen receptor. "Probably the best agent we have in this country for androgen-related hirsutism is spironolactone," said Dr. Lucky, professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati. "You need a fairly high dose for hirsutism, 100-200 mg/day."

Hirsutism in women, caused by male hormones, can be treated
By Dr. Ned Weiss
The Medical Center at Princeton
Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001

Hirsutism is a condition marked by excess facial and body hair growth in women.
Women with hirsutism have an increased production rate of one or several male hormones. While it may come as a surprise, women produce small quantities of male hormones and men produce small quantities of female hormones. Excess male hormones in women can be caused by a variety of factors, including certain chronic and/or inherited conditions, pregnancy or medications.
For women who suffer from excess hair, self-image issues are quite common, and much time, effort and money is spent trying to remove the unwanted hair.
To understand the condition, it is helpful to recognize that there are two types of hair growth in females. One kind is villous hair that appears on the face, is soft and light, and is sometimes referred to as "peach fuzz." The other kind is terminal hair. It is a coarse, stubbly hair that appears on the midline of the body, side burns and on the face. Terminal hair is what we worry about when discussing hirsutism.
'Hirsute women can take heart in the knowledge that both the medical community and the pharmaceutical community take hirsutism seriously and are constantly striving for ways to help.'
