Why is this medication prescribed? Return to top
Acyclovir is used to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals; herpes zoster (shingles); and chickenpox. It does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching and promotes healing. Topical acyclovir does not prevent the recurrence of sores but may decrease pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear. Oral acyclovir decreases the frequency and severity of recurrent sores, but it is used only by people with severe herpes infections because of possible adverse effects. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How should this medicine be used? Return to top
Acyclovir comes as an ointment for use on the skin and as a tablet, capsule, and liquid to take by mouth. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take acyclovir exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Use this medication as soon as possible after symptoms appear.

Herpes is an infection caused by either the Type 1 (HSV-1) or Type 2 (HSV-2) herpes simplex virus. Although the two viruses are closely related and either may be found at various body sites, each has a preferred location. Generally, HSV-1 causes infections on the lip, mouth or facial areas. HSV-2 is usually found in the genital area. HOW COMMON IS GENITAL HERPES?
It is estimated that 50-80% of American adults have HSV-1 and 21% have HSV-2 herpes simplex virus. More than two-thirds of these people have positive blood tests for HSV with no history of symptoms or outbreaks. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE IS INFECTED WITH GENITAL HERPES?
HOW IS GENITAL HERPES TRANSMITTED?
The herpes virus is transmitted when a person makes direct contact with a lesion or secretions of an infected person. The virus enters the body through the skin or mucous membranes of the genital area. Transmission occurs primarily through vaginal, anal and oral-genital sexual contact. The herpes virus is quite fragile and cannot survive long outside the body. Transmission through inanimate objects such as toilet seats is unlikely. Precautions include not sharing towels, underwear, or other objects that come into contact with genital lesions. Latex condoms or latex squares can reduce the risk of transmitting the virus, but lesions may be in areas not covered by the barriers. A person is considered infectious during the prodromal phase right before the outbreak of the lesions and throughout the time until the lesions are completely healed. The prodromal phase is often marked by itching, tingling or burning at the site of the upcoming outbreak. The infected person is generally contagious during the prodrome and when lesions are present. Patients with genital herpes often shed virus in outbreaks, particularly in the first year or two after acquiring HSV-2. During times of asymptomatic shedding of virus, an individual is capable of unknowingly passing the virus to others.

Go to PDF Version Herpes Simplex (Cold Sores) WHAT IS HERPES SIMPLEX?
Herpes simplex is a viral infection that attacks the skin and nervous system, and usually produces small, irritating and sometimes painful fluid-filled blisters on or around the mouth and nose. WHAT CAUSES IT? Herpes simplex is caused by a virus, herpes simplex 1 (HSV 1). After the initial outbreak, the virus usually lies dormant in the skin or in nerve tissue until something triggers another eruption. Often the trigger is unknown, but in some people overexposure to sunlight, fever, physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menstruation, or certain foods and drugs seem to reactivate the virus. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SYMPTOMS?
The first symptoms of a herpes simplex infection usually include burning, tingling or itching sensations around the edges of the lips or nose; this is referred to as a prodromal stage. Within a few hours, small-reddened areas develop followed by the formation of small blisters filled with fluid. Several small blisters may merge to form a larger one. As the blisters enlarge, they rupture and leak sticky serum-like fluid, which rapidly crusts. In uncomplicated cases, the herpes attack usually runs its course in three weeks or less, and seldom leaves a scar. Between cold sore eruptions, the herpes simplex 1 virus lies dormant, presumably in the skin or in nearby nerve tissue.

Facial infection There are two main kinds of herpes simplex virus: type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Although HSV-1 is generally considered to be associated with orofacial infection, and HSV-2 with genital infection, both types can affect any region of the body. There are some differences, however, in the infectivity and severity of infection — HSV-1 infections are more easily acquired and infections are more severe in the orofacial region and similar with HSV-2 in the genital region. HSV-2 infection is of particular concern because of the largely asymptomatic nature of the infection, and the shedding of infective virions even in asymptomatic individuals. New vaccine prevents herpes sores but works only for women
TORONTO, Canada (AP) Researchers have made the first vaccine that protects against genital herpes. But there is a major catch: It works only in women and only if they have never had cold sores. The findings, reported Sunday, are a surprise. Until now, no vaccine has ever been shown to work in one sex but not the other. Experts say this could present unexpected trouble for creating other vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases, such as AIDS.

Herpes Zoster (Shingles) Eye Infections
What is Herpes Zoster?
Herpes zoster is the medical name for shingles. It is caused by reactivation in the adult years of the chicken pox virus that occurred during childhood (the varicalla-zoster virus). The virus can be reactivated when the body's immunity to the virus breaks down. This may happen due to normal aging, or the body's immune system may become weakened due to stress from illness, physical or emotional stress, fatigue, poor nutrition, certain medications, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other factors.
Once reactivated, the virus travels along nerve fibers, usually settling in fairly isolated areas of skin on one side of the body. The infected area of the body usually has severe pain, itching, redness, numbness, and the development of a rash. The rash on the skin develops into small, fluid-filled blisters called vesicles. Within a few days of their appearance on the skin, the vesicles break open and form scabs. In severe cases, the rash can leave permanent scars, long standing pain, numbness, and skin discoloration.

Genital Herpes Overview
Genital herpes is a common, highly infectious disease. It is transmitted from one person to another during sexual activity. Genital herpes causes blisters or groups of small ulcers (open sores) on and around the genitals in both men and women. It cannot be cured, only controlled.
  • Genital herpes is extremely widespread, largely because it is so contagious. Carriers can transmit the disease without having any symptoms themselves of active infection. As many as 50 million Americans are infected with genital herpes, with 1 million new infections each year. As many as 80-90% of those infected fail to recognize herpes symptoms or have no symptoms at all. The highest rates of infection are seen among the poor, those with less education, those using cocaine, and those with many sexual partners.
