Hereditary angioedema
Definition: Hereditary angioedema is an inherited abnormality of the immune system that causes swelling, particularly of the face, and abdominal cramping. Also see angioedema
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Hereditary angioedema is an inherited disorder. It is caused by low levels or improper function of a protein called C1 inhibitor . This, in turn, affects blood vessels. People with hereditary angioedema can develop rapid swelling of the hands, feet, limbs, face, intestinal tract, or airway (larynx or trachea). Unlike an allergic reaction , there is usually no itching or hives . Swelling of the gut can cause intestinal cramping. If swelling closes the airway, it can be fatal. Attacks of swelling can become more severe in late childhood and adolescence. There is usually a family history of the condition, but this may only reported to descendants as an unexpected, sudden, and premature death of a parent, aunt, uncle, or grandparent.

Hereditary angioedema is rare, affecting an estimated 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50,000 people in the US and worldwide. However, if you or a loved one suffers from this disease, you're not alone. The US Hereditary Angioedema Association , run by patients and their families, offers helpful information and a chance to talk to others dealing with HAE. Quantity and Quality of
DX-88 Data
Dyax has accumulated an impressive quantity and quality of data on the safety and efficacy of DX-88.
As of June 30, 2005
Efficacy Data (HAE):
218 HAE attacks
99 HAE patients
have been treated with DX-88*
*with exception of 2 attacks in 2 AAE patients.
Safety Data: 363 doses of DX-88 in 168 people have been administered Safety data includes patients treated via compassionate use, normal volunteers, and patients treated with DX-88 in the CABG indication. Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) What is HAE? Current Treatment for HAE? Why DX-88 in HAE? Clinical Trial Status What is HAE? Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is an acute inflammatory condition characterized by episodes of severe, often painful swelling affecting the extremities (hands, feet, face, etc.), the gastrointestinal tract, the genitalia, and in life-threatening cases, the larynx. HAE is caused by low or dysfunctional levels of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), a naturally occurring molecule that inhibits kallikrein and other serine proteases in the blood.

Hereditary Angioedema
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a debilitating, potentially life-threatening genetic disease characterized by unpredictable attacks of edema (swelling) in various areas of the body, including the upper airways, hands, feet, face, and abdomen. HAE attacks affecting the hands, face, and feet can be disfiguring, whereas abdominal episodes are associated with severe bouts of pain caused by swelling in the intestinal wall. Attacks that affect the upper airways can be life-threatening, as swelling can constrict the larynx or enlarge the tongue. Because HAE is a dominant inherited disease, a parent has a 50% probability of passing the condition on to their child. It is estimated that HAE affects approximately 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50,000 people worldwide. Currently, there is no specific treatment for HAE available in the United States and only one approved therapy, which uses a blood product administered intravenously, is available in a limited number of countries.
