VA Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA Liver disease seems to be more severe among veterans with chronic hepatitis C. In the study from Missouri, 47.8% have advanced fibrosis (stage 3) or cirrhosis (stage 4) among those who have a liver biopsy [5]. We have made similar observations at our medical center, with > 50% of veterans with abnormal liver function tests having grade 3 or 4 inflammation and >40% with advanced fibrosis (stage 3 or 4) on liver biopsy [unpublished data]. Liver disease from chronic HCV may be more severe among veterans because of co-factors such as frequent heavy alcohol use. However, at least one investigator found no difference in the severity of liver disease between veterans and non-veterans. Visit the VA Hepatitis Web Site: References

BEAVER, Pennsylvania (AP) Green onions were the likely source of a deadly hepatitis A outbreak at a Mexican restaurant last month, but the origin of the onions and how they were tainted remains unclear, state health officials said Friday. "All the evidence suggests that people had direct contact with the green onions," said Joel Hersh, director of epidemiology for the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The outbreak, which has killed three people and sickened at least 575, is the nation's largest ever from a single source a Chi-Chi's restaurant at the Beaver Valley Mall, about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Afgørende for evt. klinisk infektion er inoculums størrelse. 70-80% udvikler kronisk infektion.

Chief Operating Officer of Chi-Chi's Inc. Bill Zavertnik issues a statement about the hepatitis A outbreak. Story Tools HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library What is hepatitis A? Digestive system YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Hepatitis A Infectious diseases or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? MONACA, Pennsylvania (AP) State and federal health officials said Saturday that Pennsylvania's hepatitis A outbreak is winding down, even as the number of those infected climbed over 600. The investigation has shifted to how green onions linked to the outbreak became contaminated. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pennsylvania, met Saturday with Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state health officials at a community college near the Beaver County Chi-Chi's restaurant where the outbreak was first confirmed November 3. "We do feel like this particular outbreak has been successfully ended," Gerberding said, although the number of cases probably will rise over the next few days as lab test results come back.
