Hemorrhoids
Topic Overview
What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins that develop in the anal canal. Although uncomfortable at times, this common condition rarely poses a serious problem. Normally, tissue surrounding the inside of the anus, sometimes called "anal cushions," fills with blood to help control bowel movements. Hemorrhoids develop when excessive pressure or other factors cause the veins within these cushions to swell and stretch. Nearly everyone has hemorrhoids at some time. They can develop at any age, but the incidence increases after age 30. About 50% of people older than 50 have had hemorrhoids at some time in their life.
What causes hemorrhoids?
Excessive pressure on the veins in the pelvic and rectal area causes hemorrhoids. As pressure increases, blood pools in veins and causes them to swell, stretching the surrounding tissue and forming hemorrhoids. Increased pressure can come from rushing to complete a bowel movement or from constipation or persistent diarrhea, if either causes too much straining during bowel movements. Being overweight also can contribute to developing hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids
Symptoms
Bleeding during bowel movements, itching, and rectal pain are the most common hemorrhoid symptoms.
External hemorrhoids
Rectal pain occurs mainly with external hemorrhoids. You might also notice streaks of bright red blood on the toilet paper after straining to pass a stool. In rare cases, a vein inside an external hemorrhoid breaks. Blood may pool under the skin, forming a hard, painful lump. This is called a thrombosed, or clotted, hemorrhoid. A sudden sharp or burning pain during a bowel movement, along with a small spot of blood on toilet tissue, is more likely to be an anal fissure than a hemorrhoid.
Internal hemorrhoids
The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is rectal bleeding. You may find bright red streaks of blood on the toilet paper or bright red blood in the toilet bowl after having a normal bowel movement. Blood also may be visible on the surface of the stool. Other symptoms of internal hemorrhoids may include:
  • Itching. This is a frequent complaint, because internal hemorrhoids often seep mucus, which can cause itching.

Should I be worried, and what should I do about it? Thank you. Pea-Boy Dear Pea-Boy, Although it can be embarrassing, it is important for you and your peace of mind to get your anal bump diagnosed by a health care provider. For example, if it is a wart, you do not have to treat it with a hemorrhoid medication. Hemorrhoids, enlarged veins in the lower rectum and anus, are common and not serious. Straining to have a bowel movement, constipation, a low-fiber diet, pregnancy, overuse of laxatives, and prolonged sitting can cause hemorrhoids. Once hemorrhoids develop, they tend to persist, although they may not cause major problems. Discomfort and swelling may come and go, usually lasting between three to five days. Common symptoms of hemorrhoids include:
  • pain or itching near the growth in the anus
  • bright red blood at the end of a bowel movement or on the toilet paper
  • excessively moist anal area

Definition
Hemorrhoids are painful, swollen veins in the lower portion of the rectum or anus.
Alternative Names
Rectal lump; Piles; Lump in the rectum
Causes
This condition is very common, especially during pregnancy and after childbirth. Hemorrhoids result from increased pressure in the veins of the anus. The pressure causes the veins to bulge and expand, making them painful, particularly when you are sitting. The most common cause is straining during bowel movements. Hemorrhoids may result from constipation, sitting for long periods of time, and anal infections. In some cases they may be caused by other diseases, such as liver cirrhosis Internal hemorrhoids occur just inside the anus, at the beginning of the rectum. External hemorrhoids occur at the anal opening and may hang outside the anus.

How to Care for Hemorrhoids Postpartum
Due to the incredible pushing involved in bringing forth a new life, many women suffer from hemorrhoids postpartum. A consistent daily regimen of nutrition, good hygiene and exercise can help reduce hemorrhoid occurrence and discomfort. Steps: Avoid constipation. Eat a diet high in fiber and whole grains. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Exercise, even if it is just a brisk 10-minute walk. If all else fails, ask your healthcare provider about stool softeners. Place hemorrhoid pads on your sanitary napkin. Witch hazel is the main ingredient in most hemorrhoid pads and helps decrease swelling in skin tissue. Put 3 to 5 pads onto your sanitary napkin so they are right against your rectum and change them as often as you change the napkin. Use hemorrhoids pads in place of toilet paper if using toilet paper is too painful. Cleanse your rectal area thoroughly after each bowel movement. Use a peri-bottle after you have a bowel movement. Your birthing facility should provide you with one, but if they don't you can buy one at a pharmacy. It is simply a squirt bottle you fill with lukewarm water. Squirt the water on your anus after you have a bowel movement. Pat the area dry, or air-dry if it is too sensitive to use toilet paper, or use hemorrhoid pads to cleanse the rectum.

    : Hemorrhoids What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids (or piles) are enlarged veins in and around the anus and are quite common. Some form outside the anus, while others start inside the body and may protrude out of the anus during or after a bowel movement. What causes hemorrhoids?
What are the signs and symptoms?
Hemorrhoids cause rectal itching, irritation, burning and sometimes bleeding. They may cause swelling or discomfort during bowel movements and some hemorrhoids can be quite painful. What is the treatment for hemorrhoids?
There are several ways to treat hemorrhoids.
Most people can get relief by taking these simple steps:
    • Avoid foods that upset your digestion or cause diarrhea, such as spicy foods, alcohol and milk/dairy products. Drink 6 to 8 eight ounce glasses of water each day to help keep stools soft. Do not strain during bowel movements. Trying to force a bowel movement can make hemorrhoids worse and straining for more than 5 minutes can be harmful. Try not to stay on the toilet any longer than necessary.

    Hemorrhoids
are bulging blood vessels in and about the anus and lower rectum. They can be either internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids develop beneath the anal lining. The most common symptom is painless bleeding during bowel movements; however, if the hemorrhoid is completely prolapsed—protrudes from the anus—it may cause severe pain. External hemorrhoids are hard, sensitive lumps that develop near the anus. If a blood clot develops within a hemorrhoid, painful swelling and occasionally bleeding may occur. Normal everyday pressure on the rectal veins caused by sitting and standing may eventually cause the veins to enlarge. Other contributing factors include age, pregnancy, chronic constipation or diarrhea, overuse of laxatives or enemas and straining during bowel movements. Though hemorrhoids do not cause cancer, the bleeding associated with hemorrhoids is similar to that seen in colorectal cancer and other serious diseases of the gastrointestinal system. Therefore, it is very important that symptoms be reported to a physician trained in treating colorectal diseases. Treatment Mild cases of hemorrhoids can be relieved by increasing water intake and the amount of fiber in the diet and avoiding straining during bowel movements. Pain and swelling will usually decrease in two to seven days, and the lump should resolve within a month to six weeks.

    Types and symptoms of hemorrhoids
Two of the most common types of hemorrhoids are external and internal hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids are those that occur outside of the anal verge (the distal end of the anal canal). They are sometimes painful, and can be accompanied by swelling and irritation. Itching, although often thought to be a symptom from external hemorrhoids, is more commonly due to skin irritation. If the vein ruptures and a blood clot develops, the hemorrhoid becomes a thrombosed hemorrhoid Internal hemorrhoids are those that occur inside the rectum . As this area lacks pain receptors , internal hemorrhoids are usually not painful and most people are not aware that they have them. Internal hemorrhoids, however, may bleed when irritated.
