What is viral hemorrhagic fever?
Viral hemorrhagic fever is the collective name given to the diseases caused by a group of viruses such as Ebola virus and Marburg virus. The Ebola virus was named for the river in Zaire where it was discovered. Marburg virus was named for the city in Germany where the disease was first diagnosed. Viral hemorrhagic fever begins with fever and muscle aches and can result in a relatively mild illness or can lead to death.
Where do these viruses come from?
Although the source of these viruses in nature is unknown, this group of viruses can occasionally be found in rodents, ticks, and mosquitoes within endemic areas. Monkeys and humans are also susceptible and may become a source of virus if they become infected. Tissues of infected primates can also serve as a source of infection to staff in laboratories or in import and quarantine facilities that handle primates.
How common are Ebola and Marburg viruses?

Bleeding occurs in the form of leakage from capillaries in the internal organs and the skin and mucous membranes. The causative viruses may be transmitted to humans by insects, ticks, or rodents, but in the case of the African hemorrhagic fevers, Ebola and Marburg, the animal carrier is unknown. In addition to Ebola and Marburg, well-known hemorrhagic fevers include hantavirus hantavirus

Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever Angola
August 25, 2005 As of August 23, 2005, the Ministry of Health in Angola reported a total of 374 cases, including 329 deaths countrywide from the Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever. Of these, 368 cases, including 323 deaths, were reported in the Uige Province. A total of 158 cases were laboratory confirmed. Fifty-two contacts are still being monitored in the Uige Province and clinical specimens from alerts continue to be shipped to the Special Pathogens Program, National Microbiology Laboratory, Public Health Agency of Canada, for diagnostic testing. The last confirmed case of Marburg died on 21 July 2005 in Songo municipality, Uige Province. There have been no laboratory confirmed cases since then. Assessment of the Outbreak
The international response to the outbreak in Angola began one month ago, on 22 March. The features of Marburg hemorrhagic fever, and the conditions in Angola, have been an extreme test of international capacity to hold emerging diseases at bay. The outbreak in Angola is the largest and deadliest on record for this rare disease, which is presently showing a case fatality rate higher than 90%. For comparison, outbreaks of the closely related Ebola hemorrhagic fever have shown mortality rates ranging, according to the virus strain involved, from 53% to 88%. The only other large outbreak of Marburg, in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 1998 through 2000, had a case fatality of 83%.

What is viral hemorrhagic fever?
Viral hemorrhagic fever refers to a group of illnesses caused by four distinct families of viruses. These viruses cause severe multi-system illness, meaning that they affect several organ systems. Some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses and others cause severe, life-threatening disease. Examples of viral hemorrhagic fever include Ebola and Marburg.
How common is viral hemorrhagic fever?
Outbreaks of hemorrhagic fevers occur irregularly and cannot be easily predicted. The viruses that cause hemorrhagic fever are spread throughout the globe. Because each virus is associated with one or more particular host species, the virus and the disease it causes are usually seen only where the host species lives. Some hosts are restricted to a certain area, while others live throughout a continent or the world. Due to global trading, it is possible for a host to be shipped to anywhere.

(SAP-AFP) - An outbreak of an unidentified haemorrhagic fever has claimed the lives of 93 people in northern Angola, Deputy Minister of Health Jose van Dunem said late on Mon 21 Mar 2005. Of the 101 cases reported in the Uige provincial hospital in northern Angola, 93 people have died and 2 have left the hospital without being properly discharged, said Van Dunem at a news conference. "We are engaged in an effort with the community to find the 2 patients who fled the hospital and to detect new cases," he said.
The results of blood samples sent to Senegal showed that the mysterious outbreak was not due to yellow fever, dengue fever, West Nile virus, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever or Rift Valley fever, said Moises Francisco, a member of the Angolan technical team monitoring the outbreak in Uige. Angolan health officials have asked the Centers for Disease Control in the United States to conduct tests to determine whether the fever is caused by Ebola virus. "We have the results [from Senegal] and they are negative," said Van Dunem. "We are now awaiting the results of the Ebola tests that we have asked from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta."
Angolan health officials said that 8 cases of haemorrhagic fever were detected in municipalities near the city of Uige. The officials last week gave the death toll at 87 from November 2004 to mid-March 2005. Health officials last week said they did not believe that they were dealing with an outbreak of Ebola, fever which kills by inducing massive internal haemorrhages. Most of those affected by the disease are children aged under 5 years, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO has expressed concern over the fact that children are the main victims, saying that in general haemorrhagic fevers, such as the one caused by the Ebola virus, hit all age groups without distinction. "We're perplexed. We don't know if it's Ebola fever or something else," said Fadela Chaib in Geneva.
