What carries viruses that cause viral hemorrhagic fevers? ... What needs to be done to address the threat of viral hemorrhagic fevers? What are viral hemorrhagic fevers? Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) refer to a group of illnesses that are caused by several distinct families of viruses. In general, the term "viral hemorrhagic fever" is used to describe a severe multisystem syndrome (multisystem in that multiple organ systems in the body are affected). Characteristically, the overall vascular system is damaged, and the body's ability to regulate itself is impaired. These symptoms are often accompanied by hemorrhage (bleeding); however, the bleeding is itself rarely life-threatening. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, many of these viruses cause severe, life-threatening disease.

Health education or patient education is important aspect of disease management program. Even some programs, especially some chronic disease management can go further and introduced self-management for some aspect of illness. Good example is management of arthritis. There are a variety of models for both formal and informal self-management. However, the core concepts involve engagement in self-care, improved self-monitoring, interactions with healthcare professionals and coping with disease. Self-management programs are mostly provided to people with chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes, and some skin diseases. Patient education and self-management programs are aim to improve the efficiency and quality of the healthcare process and overall improve quality of life. It is not really about reduction in doctor visits or clinic attendances. Even sometime, an improved healthcare process can include more frequent use of services because of improved compliance. In this website, you can find resources for articles about common health topics and news. New findings in the field are included some articles. Topics are categories in the alphabetical order and you can use Health Article Search Box to search the topic you want.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers share the following characteristics:
They are all RNA viruses They are all zoonotic (natural reservoir is an arthropod or other animal host) Disease is restricted to habitat of the host Humans become infected by contact with host Some viruses can be transmitted from human to human
Transmission to humans (depends upon specific virus)
By contact with rodent urine, feces, saliva, blood From mosquito or tick bites Contact with vector-infected livestock
      Pathophysiology
The target organ is the vascular bed. Dominant clinical features are due to microvascular damage and changes in vascular permeability

VIRAL HEMORRHAGIC FEVERS What are viral hemorrhagic fevers? Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are a group of illnesses caused by several viruses, mostly found in animals or insects. Ebola, Marburg and Lassa fever are a few examples of VHFs. In general, the term "viral hemorrhagic fever" is used to describe a serious illness in which many organ systems in the body are affected. Viral hemorrhagic fevers have never been reported in the United States. How can someone come into contact with VHFs?
  • Contact with infected animals and animal body fluids; Being bitten by infected mosquitoes or ticks; or Close contact with an infected person or infected body fluids.
Viral hemorrhagic fevers as weapons: Terrorist groups have attempted to weaponize various agents that cause viral hemorrhagic fever by aerosolizing infected body fluids or rodent excrement. Please note: Just because you come into contact with VHFs does not mean you will get sick from it. What happens if someone gets sick from VHFs? The overall vascular (blood vessel) system is damaged, and the body's ability to regulate itself is damaged. These symptoms are often combined with hemorrhage (bleeding). Specific signs and symptoms change with the type of VHF. The first symptoms often include the following:
  • fever lack of energy dizziness muscle aches loss of strength exhaustion
Caution: Do not assume that just because a person has cold or flu symptoms that he/she has a viral hemorrhagic fever.)

CDC Announcement A bout Rift Valley F ever: A large outbreak of Rift Valley fever was reported early in 1998 in Kenya and Somalia. The virus is transmitted primarily by infected mosquitoes and other biting insects and occasionally by contact with the blood or body fluids of infected animals. While the CDC does not recommend travelers cancel travel plans to Kenya or Somalia, they do advise travelers to take appropriate precautions to prevent infection. This includes:
  • liberal use of insect repellent.
    wearing long sleeves and pants.
using bednets in areas where outbreaks are occurring.
avoiding contact with livestock in areas where outbreaks are occurring.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) is a term that refers to a group of illnesses caused by several distinct families of viruses. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses cause illnesses that are relatively mild, many of these cause severe, life-threatening diseases with no known cures. Perhaps the most known of this group of diseases is the Ebola virus, made famous by the movie “Outbreak.” Hemorrhagic fever viruses are caused by viruses of four distinct families:
  • arenaviruses filoviruses

Does this paradigm describe “evolutionary transmission”, as we have discussed it in classs? Case: THIS is where Hanta comes from: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome – Vermont A 61-year-old previously healthy Vermont resident was hospitalized with respiratory failure requiring ventilation., profound hypoxemia, and low blood pressure. Subsequent chest radiographs revealed bilateral edema consistent with acute respiratory distress syndrome ARDS. During the 2 months preceding hospitalization the patient had cleaned a mouse nest from a woodpile, observed mice in the basement, and trapped 2 mice under the kitchen counters. During an onsite investigation conducted by the Vermont Department of Health, mice droppings were observed under the kitchen counter and in the cellar. The wildlife services program of the U.S.D.A. trapped rodents near patient's house: 46 rodents were captured, including 6 deer mice, 13 white-footed mice, 21 woodland jumping mice, one meadow jumping mouse, four chipmunks, and one vole. These rodents were tested serologically at CDC for hantavirus antibodies and 2 of 5 deer mice were positive; all other rodents were negative.

Tear Gas / Riot Control Agents
What is tear gas? "Tear gas" is a term commonly used for a group of chemicals known as riot control agents. Riot control agents temporarily make people unable to function by causing irritation to the eyes, mouth, throat, lungs, and skin. The term "tear gas" comes from the immediate flow of tears that typically follows exposure. Over a dozen chemicals are considered to be riot control agents. The three most common are CN (sold as Mace), CS, and CR. [The full names for these chemicals are chloroacetophenone (CN), chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile (CS), and dibenzoxazepine (CR).] Pepper spray is another example. How is tear gas used? Tear gas is used by law enforcement officials for crowd control and by individuals for personal protection (pepper spray and Mace, for example). Some types of tear gas have been used during war and in military settings to test the speed and ability of military personnel to use their gas masks. It is possible that terrorists could use tear gas as part of an attack. How might people be exposed to tear gas?
