Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is an uncommon group of disorders that can occur at any age. These disorders affect women more often than men. About half of the time, the cause of autoimmune hemolytic anemia cannot be determined (idiopathic autoimmune hemolytic anemia). Autoimmune hemolytic anemia can also be caused by or occur with another disease, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, and rarely it follows the use of certain drugs, such as penicillin.

Alternate Names : Anemia - Immune Hemolytic - Secondary to Drugs, Immune Hemolytic Anemia Secondary to Drugs Definition Drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia is an acquired form of hemolytic anemia caused by interaction of certain drugs with the immune system. The result is the production of antibodies against the red blood cells and premature red blood cell destruction.
Antibodies Drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia occurs when certain drugs start an immune reaction against red blood cells. In some instances, the drugs interact with the red blood cell membrane, causing the cell to become antigenic. This means the body identifies these cells as not belonging to the body.

Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: This disorder results from an abnormality of the immune system that destroys red blood cells prematurely. The cause is unknown. Alternative Names: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia; Anemia - idiopathic autoimmune hemolytic Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Idiopathic autoimmune hemolytic anemia is an acquired disease that occurs when antibodies form against the person's own red blood cells. In the idiopathic form of this disease, the cause is unknown. There are other types of immune hemolytic anemias where the cause may result from an underlying disease or medication. Idiopathic autoimmune hemolytic anemia accounts for one-half of all immune hemolytic anemias. The onset of the disease may be quite rapid and very serious.

Signs and Symptoms Hemolytic anemia is a term used for a variety of anemias characterized by a low count of red blood cells. Red blood cells are produced by stem cells in bone marrow. They contain hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen in the blood stream throughout the body. Hemolytic anemia occurs when red blood cells have an abnormally short life span. They're destroyed faster than bone marrow can produce them. The term for destruction of red blood cells is "hemolysis." Symptoms of hemolytic anemia may vary with each child. The following are some of the most common symptoms:
    • Abnormally pale skin as well as jaundice or yellowing of skin and eyes Confusion Dark colored urine Dizziness, weakness or intolerance to physical activity Enlarged spleen and liver Fever Heart murmur Increased heart rate
These symptoms may be similar to other blood conditions and medical problems. Your child's doctors will conduct several tests to diagnose the disease. There are more than a dozen conditions characterized by hemolytic anemia. Certain forms of hemolytic anemia are "inherited" or "congenital," such as sickle cell anemia or thalassemia. Others are "acquired" and can be triggered by certain drugs, infections or other environmental exposures.

General Discussion Cold Antibody Hemolytic Anemia is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the premature destruction of red blood cells by the body's natural defenses against invading organisms (antibodies). Normally, the red blood cells have a life span of approximately 120 days before they are removed by the spleen. In individuals with Cold Antibody Hemolytic Anemia, the red blood cells are destroyed prematurely and bone marrow production of new cells can no longer compensate for their loss. The severity of the anemia is determined by the length of time that the red blood cells survive and by the capacity of the bone marrow to continue new red blood cell production. Immune Hemolytic Anemias may be subdivided by the temperatures at which the antibodies destroy red blood cells. As its name implies, Cold Antibody Hemolytic Anemia occurs at temperatures of approximately to 10 degrees centigrade (while Warm Antibody Hemolytic Anemia, for example, occurs at temperatures of 37 degrees or higher).
