Overview
Hematuria is defined as blood in the urine. It can be blood that you can see, known as gross hematuria. Microscopic hematuria is something your doctor may find on a routine physical exam. Regardless of which type of hematuria you may have, it is a red flag that there may be an underlying problem. You should call your doctor right away if you see blood in your urine, even after just one time and even if it disappears. Blood in the urine must originate from some part of the urinary tract. The urinary tract consists, in part, of your kidneys, which produce urine. This urine is carried down a tube called the ureter that connects the kidneys to the bladder. The bladder is a reservoir that holds urine until you are ready to urinate. Finally, the urine passes through a tube called the urethra that passes it out of the body. In a man, the urine passes through the prostate Gland on the way through the urethra. The prostate gland is involved in production of semen.

Whether the blood is visible only under a microscope or visible to the naked eye, hematuria is a sign that something is causing bleeding in the genitourinary tract: the kidneys, the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder (ureters), the prostate gland (in men), the bladder, or the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body (urethra). Bleeding may happen once or it may be recurrent. It can indicate different problems in men and women. Causes of this condition range from non-life threatening (e.g., urinary tract infection) to serious (e.g., cancer, kidney disease). Therefore, a physician should be consulted as soon as possible. Overview of this condition Hematuria is a clinical term referring to the presence of blood, specifically red blood cells, in the urine.
Whether this blood is visible only under a microscope or present in quantities sufficient to be seen with the naked eye, hematuria is a sign that something is causing abnormal bleeding in the patient's genitourinary tract. The source of the bleeding can be located anywhere along this tract: the kidneys, the ureters (the tubes running from the kidneys to the bladder), the prostate gland (in men), the bladder or the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body). The bleeding may happen only once or it may be recurrent. It may or may not be accompanied by pain or discomfort during urination, and it can indicate different problems in men than in women. The cause may be as routine as an infection or as serious as cancer. Whatever the circumstances, hematuria should be regarded as a danger signal demanding immediate attention. Only a thorough physical examination and medical evaluation can interpret its meaning, determine its cause, or provide the patient with facts needed to make informed decisions about its treatment.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Blood in the urine can originate anywhere along the urinary tract and both gross and microscopic hematuria may represent serious underlying disease. Gross hematuria is often alarming and will prompt the patient to seek medical attention. Likewise, the office practitioner may be faced with the incidental finding of asymptomatic microscopic hematuria. Patient characteristics and the clinical presentation will help guide the clinician in proper evaluation and diagnosis.

DEFINITION Hematuria is defined as the abnormal presence of red blood cells (RBCs) in the urine and is commonly divided into gross and microscopic hematuria. Gross, or visible hematuria can result from as little as 1 cc of blood in a liter of urine, and therefore, the color does not reflect the degree of blood loss. Also, numerous other substances can induce such a color change and will be discussed further in the

    Hematuria.
Definition Etiology Some cases occur from unaccountable causes, and may be termed renal hemophilia. I have an interesting case, a "bleeder"—hemophilia—who bleeds from the slightest provocation, most frequently from the nose or gums, though on three different occasions the hemorrhage has been from the kidneys. Symptoms Diagnosis The color of the urine will vary from a smoky hue to a dark coffee color, and between which there may be every shade of red. The microscope will reveal the presence of red blood-corpuscles thus distinguishing it from hemoglobinuria, in which they are entirely absent. If the hemorrhage be from the kidney, the blood is apt to be more uniformly mixed with the urine, and there will often be cylindrical clots the shape of the ureter or mold of the kidney. If from the bladder, the first urine voided may be quite clear, or at least much lighter than the last portion. When the quantity of blood is very slight, the color may not be deep enough to reveal it, and reagents will have to be used to determine its presence. At times the clotted blood may completely fill the bladder. If there be doubt as to the source of the hemorrhage a cystoscopic examination of the bladder, and catheterization of each ureter, will determine the location, and remove all doubt.
