Subject: Can liver hemangiomas be related to other vascular issues?
From To Post catcrazy
I have been having upper right abdominal pain for the last 6 months. After much testing the following has been found: 3 liver hemangiomas each measuring at or a little above 1 cm in the right lobe of the liver near the dome. Also, a small right kidney cyst measuring 5mm. And lastly, several phleboliths within the pelvic area. My question is are these somehow related? and can having multiple hemangiomas in one area like this cause pain?
Thanks so much for any information you can provide. Forum-M.D.-KYP
catcrazy I am not aware of a disease connecting the three findings. Yes, it is possible that the hemangiomas may be causing your discomfort. If this is the case, then surgical resection should be considered.
If you are female and taking birth control pills, you should consider stopping, since they are associated with hemangioma enlargement.

Hemangioma - angiogram Hemangioma on the face (nose) Circulatory system Definition: Hemangiomas are abnormally dense collections of dilated small blood vessels (capillaries) that may occur in the skin or internal organs. Alternative Names: Cavernous hemangioma; Strawberry nevus Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The classically recognized hemangioma is a visible red skin lesion that may be in the top skin layers ( capillary hemangioma ), deeper in the skin (cavernous hemangioma), or a mixture of both. Hemangiomas are usually present at birth, although they may appear within a few months after birth, often beginning at a site that has appeared slightly dusky or differently colored than the surrounding tissue. Hemangiomas, both deep and superficial, undergo a rapid growth phase in which the volume and size increase rapidly. This phase is followed by a rest phase, in which the hemangioma changes very little, and an involutional phase in which the hemangioma begins to disappear. During the involutional phase, hemangiomas may disappear completely. Large cavernous hemangiomas distort the skin around them and will ultimately leave visible changes in the skin. A superficial capillary hemangioma may involute completely, leaving no evidence of its past presence.

Research article Treatment of hemangiomas in children using a Nd:YAG laser in conjunction with ice cooling of the epidermis: techniques and results Ioannis Vlachakis Stefanos Gardikis Eleni Michailoudi and Georgios Charissis BMC Pediatrics The electronic version of this article is the complete one and can be found online at: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2431/3/2 Received Accepted Published Keywords: Children, Hemangioma, Nd:YAG Laser Outline Abstract Abstract Background Methods Results ... Pre-publication history Background Hemangiomas are the most common type of congenital anomaly in childhood. Although many resolve spontaneously, intervention is required when their growth could damage vital adjacent structures. Various therapeutic approaches to childhood hemangiomas with different types of laser have been described previously. The objective of this study was to determine whether the cooling of the epidermis during irradiation of hemangiomas with a Nd:YAG laser prevents thermal damage and decreases the number of sessions required to treat these lesions. Methods Results After 6 months of follow-up, from the first session of laser treatment, total resolution was obtained in 72 (65.5%) patients. A second or third session followed in 30 out of 38 patients in which, the initial results were good, moderate, or poor. The parents of the remaining eight children refused this second session and these patients excluded from the study Complications were seen in nine (8.8%) patients. One patient had postoperative bleeding which stopped spontaneously, while atrophic scars occurred in six (5.8%) patients, and hypertrophic scars in two (1.9%) patients.

Birthmarks - red
Definition: Red birthmarks are colored, vascular (blood vessel) skin markings that develop before or shortly after birth. (See also birthmarks - pigmented
Alternative Names: Strawberry mark; Vascular skin changes; Angioma cavernosum; Capillary hemangioma; Hemangioma simplex
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: There are two main categories of birthmarks. Red birthmarks are a vascular type of birthmark. Pigmented birthmarks are areas in which the color of the birthmark is different from the color of the rest of the skin.
Hemangiomas
are a common vascular birthmark. They are usually painless and harmless. The cause of hemangioma is unknown. The color results from the extensive development of blood vessels at the site.
Strawberry hemangiomas (strawberry mark, nevus vascularis, capillary hemangioma, hemangioma simplex) may appear anywhere on the body, but are most common on the face, scalp, back, or chest. They consist of small, closely packed blood vessels. They may be absent at birth, and develop at several weeks. They usually grow rapidly, remain a fixed size, and then subside. 95% of strawberry hemangiomas disappear by the time the child is 9 years old, although there may be some slight discoloration or puckering of the skin where a strawberry hemangioma existed.
Cavernous hemangiomas (angioma cavernosum, cavernoma) are similar to strawberry hemangiomas but are more deeply situated. They may appear as a red-blue spongy mass of tissue filled with blood. Some of these lesions disappear on their own, usually as a child approaches school age.

Stroke "Vascular malformations of the head, face, and neck" is often used as a general term and includes a number of different abnormalities that usually occur in children or young adults. They may appear as a cosmetic blemish or mass, or may come to attention by causing a disturbance of function. Vascular malformations have received different names depending on the cause: A hemangioma is a benign blood vessel tumor appearing within the first month of life. The tumor may grow rapidly, disproportional to the child's growth, during what is known as the proliferative phase, and usually reaches a maximum size when the child is between one and three years of age. The hemangioma then begins to get smaller during the involutive phase. Eventually, in most cases, all that remains is some excess fatty fibrous tissue (like wrinkled skin) that can easily be removed by a plastic surgeon. Generally, hemangiomas only require treatment early in life if they bleed or result in some obstruction of normal function, for example the inability to close the eye. Embolization of the hemangioma may be performed to stop bleeding or preserve function.

A very important grant has been denied. It is needed to help fund research and treatment studies for Birthmarks. This study would have helped many families and saved some lives (yes, some Birthmarks can be life threatening).
Please read this petition and sign it. If you know other people who would be willing to sign this, please forward it to them.
If you need more information about Hemangiomas and other Birthmarks, please visit my support group and learn more. My site is at http://tarheelhemangiomas.tripod.com. Please read on to learn more about this Grant.....
THIS FUNDING WOULD HAVE PROVIDED CRITICAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO HELP EXPAND THE MEDICINE AND SCIENCE OF HEMANGIOMA AND VASCULAR MALFORMATION, AS WELL AS COORDINATE PATIENT SUPPORT IN THE FIELD.
Because the NIH denied this grant the necessary funding will not be available to the institutions thus delaying the development of a multicenter organization. THIS DENIAL WILL EFFECT OUR CHILDREN.
According the to physicians involved it is apparent that some politics are involved in these applications and while it is not clear what programs have received funding it is suggested that some already well funded programs have received more funding from the NIH.

HEMANGIOMAS
