    Strawberry hemangiomas
by Robert Steele, MD (see more from this expert) When our son was two weeks old, a pink mark appeared between his nose and mouth. Since then the mark has grown to almost the size of a dime and has become bright red and slightly raised. Our doctor has told us it is a strawberry hemangioma birthmark and will most likely get bigger. We are upset because the mark is in a prominent spot and is the first thing people notice about our son. How large is it likely to get, and what, if anything, can be done to remove this mark?
Strawberry hemangiomas are the most common tumors of infancy. I say tumor, not as it is typically used to mean cancer, but rather, meaning a collection of cells. In the case of hemangiomas, the collection of cells are those that make up tiny blood vessels. Strawberry hemangiomas, while they are technically birth marks, are often not noticed at birth. In fact, they usually do not become obvious until the first few weeks of life. These occur more often in females than males and are more commonly seen in Caucasian infants than in other racial groups. The vast majority of these occur as one solitary mark. However, in about 20 percent of these infants, more than one may be present.

Hemangiomas What is it?
Hemangiomas are benign tumors consisting of masses of twisted, congested blood vessels. They are usually found incidentally on an ultrasound or CT. These tumors cause no symptoms and generally require no treatment from an orthodox medical perspective. What causes it?
These generally develop due to poor liver function and congestion. Treatment
It is important with these conditions to have a strong functioning immune system - this can only come from having a strong functioning liver. Recommended Dr Cabot books: "The Healthy Liver and Bowel Book"
"The Liver Cleansing Diet"

"Raw Juices Can Save Your Life"
General Recommendations: From a nutritional medicine perspective it is recommended to take excess workload off this organ via sound eating principles and supplementation therefore improving the liver function and helping to ease the congestion.

Also known as a strawberry hemangioma, a hemangioma is a proliferation of blood vessels that typically occurs shortly after birth. Hemangiomas usually starts off flat and then becomes raised. They can remain small or can become very large. Hemangiomas can be entirely superficial or remain deep to the skin. A hemangioma generally regresses once it has reached its peak size. This may take several years, and for larger and deeper hemangiomas, there may some residual scarring.
Vascular lasers are helpful in treating the red superficial component of the hemangioma and are also used if a hemangioma is bleeding. When a hemangioma is deep, other treatment modalities such as corticosteroids may be required.
Given the natural regression of hemangiomas, treatment is usually reserved for hemangiomas in vital areas (

Hemangiomas
Hemangiomas are a type of vascular lesion and are the most common soft-tissue tumors of infancy. While slightly more than half of hemangiomas are visible at birth, many do not appear for several weeks after the baby is sent home from the hospital. Also unlike other birthmarks, hemangiomas grow rapidly for several months, stop and then slowly disappear on their own over many years. Appearance
Usually, a pediatric dermatologist can tell by the appearance of a hemangioma, how deep and in what stage it is. In infants, hemangiomas may begin as a pale white spot. As the hemangioma grows, it becomes more recognizable and changes into bright red, slightly raised hard bumps. Deep hemangiomas will be soft, warm and have a slight bluish color. They range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters. Usually there is only one hemangioma, but about 20 percent of infants will have many. Generally, hemangiomas are at their largest by 6 to 8 months of age, but deep hemangiomas can take 12 to 14 months to mature. Incidence
Hemangiomas are the most common soft-tissue tumors of infancy, affecting about 5 to 10 percent of 1 year olds. Girls are more likely to have hemangiomas (3:1). Premature infants also have a higher incidence.

Hemangiomas of Infancy Clinic
Hemangiomas are the most common benign tumor of infancy. The lesions usually are seen soon after birth and grow for several months. Eventually the lesions will go away, but the process may take up to 10 years. Complications are rare but can be devastating if not treated in a timely and appropriate manner.
This clinic provides comprehensive care for the child and family with hemangiomas. In addition, dermatologists at Children's Hospital are leaders in a Hemangioma study group. This group of 10 pediatric hospitals has developed a database of 1,000 hemangioma patients and collaborates on research projects to stay on the leading edge of treatment options.
Family-centered care
At Children's Hospital of Wisconsin we provide family-centered care because we know that a child's health affects the whole family. We create a partnership with families talking openly and often about their child's care and their personal beliefs. Our goal is to support families by building on their strengths.
Treat ages 0-18
Our staff specializes in caring for children and many have advanced degrees and training. Our doctors are trained and certified in pediatrics and devote their entire practice to treating kids.

HEMANGIOMAS AND VASCULAR MALFORMATIONS
Description
Hemangioma, a type of birthmark, is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor made up of rapidly growing vascular cells. These congenital lesions are not necessarily apparent at birth but appear from 1-4 weeks afterwards (may initially manifest as a faint red mark). In fact, only 30% are visible at birth. Usually occurring on the head or neck, hemangiomas can appear anywhere, even on the internal organs. This type of birthmark is typified by its rapid growth and change during the first year and then its regression or slow disappearance which can last from 3-10 years. Some disappear completely while others only partially fade. The vast majority of hemangiomas occur on the head and neck. In early stages some appear as reddish or bluish spots or patches. Vascular Malformation is a congenital growth or birthmark that is composed of blood vessels. Unlike hemangiomas, vascular malformations due not These malformations are categorized into five types: Port Wine Stains: Capillary malformation that cause a change in skin color and may be associated with nerve supply deficiency to blood vessels.

Dermoid Cyst Hemangioma and vascular malformations are frequently discussed in the same setting with the thinking being that these two conditions are due to their vascular nature. In fact, these lesions are completely different with different presentations, treatments, and long term outcomes. A hemangioma is a non-malignant tumor which is made up of rapidly growing endothelial or vascular cells. They may be capillary, cavernous or mixed in origin. Usually these lesions appear at the time of birth, or shortly thereafter, as a small spot that appears pink or red. They may present on the face or elsewhere on the body. In may cases, this is the only manifestation of the process. However, there are times when these lesions will undergo rapid growth during the newborn period. This rapid growth phase will last from 6 to10 months and during this time may grow very large. Problems that may occur during this stage include bleeding, infection, mass effect and the possible obstruction of critical structures such as the mouth, nose, eyes or ears, which would require early treatment.
