Heartburn
What is heartburn?
Heartburn refers to the symptoms you feel when acids in your stomach flow backward into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from your throat to your stomach. Heartburn is a common problem. Despite its name, it has nothing to do with the heart. Heartburn that happens often is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.
How does it occur?
At the bottom of the esophagus is a ringlike muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter. When you swallow food, this muscular ring opens to let the food pass into the stomach. The ring then closes to prevent the stomach contents from going back into the esophagus. When this sphincter muscle is not working properly, stomach acid and food flow backward into the esophagus. Because the esophagus does not have the protective lining that the stomach has, the acid causes pain. The sphincter muscle sometimes does not work properly if:

You've just eaten a big meal and feel a burning sensation in your chest. Heartburn, right? Probably, but there's a chance the chest pain is a warning sign of a heart attack. Learning to tell the difference between heartburn and something more serious may be a matter of life and death. Here's what you need to know. What is heartburn? Normally, digestive acid is trapped in your stomach by the lower esophageal sphincter. This ring of muscle functions as a valve, which opens only as you swallow. But sometimes the valve relaxes or weakens, allowing stomach acid to flow back into your esophagus. Pressure on the sphincter muscle from excess weight, overeating or lying down too soon after a meal may cause it to open slightly. Certain foods, as well as overindulgence in alcohol or caffeine, can relax the sphincter or increase production of stomach acid.

Overview You've just eaten a big meal and leaned back in your favorite chair. Then it happens. Your chest starts to hurt so much it feels like it's on fire. Heartburn is common, and an occasional episode is generally nothing to worry about. However, many people battle heartburn regularly, even daily. Frequent heartburn can be a serious problem, and it deserves medical attention. Frequent or constant heartburn is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a disease in which stomach acid or, occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus). This constant backwash of acid can irritate the lining of your esophagus, causing it to be irritated and inflamed.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)the muscle connecting the esophagus with the stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD. Doctors believe that some people suffer from GERD due to a condition called hiatal hernia. In most cases, heartburn can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes; however, some people may require medication or surgery. This fact sheet provides information on GERD-its causes, symptoms, treatment, and long-term complications.

Heartburn and Indigestion Heartburn and Indigestion
Many women have heartburn for the first time during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Although this is not usually a sign of a serious problem, it can be uncomfortable or painful. Gastroesophageal reflux is often called “acid reflux” or "heartburn.” But this condition has nothing to do with the heart! Causes of Heartburn and Indigestion During Pregnancy
Heartburn occurs when digested food from your stomach, which contains acid, is pushed up toward your esophagus. This causes a burning sensation behind your breastbone or a burning sensation that starts in your stomach and seems to rise up. You may also have a sour taste in your mouth or a feeling that vomit is rising in your throat. Normally, food moves down a pipe (called the esophagus) between your mouth and your stomach. When you’re not eating, a circular valve around the bottom of your esophagus closes off the connection between your esophagus and your stomach. This valve keeps the acids in your stomach from rising up. When you swallow, the valve relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow through. If the valve relaxes when you’re not eating, the acids from your stomach can flow back up into your esophagus, irritating it and causing a burning sensation.

Use of Antacids and Acid Inhibitors Antacids and acid inhibitors are effective and safe remedies for occasional heartburn. If antacids work for you in reducing or relieving your heartburn symptoms, it’s best to use them rather than acid inhibitors because antacids are milder and tend to cause fewer side effects than acid inhibitors. If you experience frequent or very severe heartburn, or if nonprescription medications do not work for you, consult your doctor. Other, more powerful medications are available by prescription. Nonprescription acid-blocking medications include the following:

About the author Dr. Minocha ( http://www.diagnosishealth.com/minocha.htm ) is the Professor of Medicine and Director, Division of Digestive Diseases at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS, and is the author of How to Stop Heartburn; Simple Ways to Heal Heartburn and Acid Reflux CONCEPTS Gastroesophageal reflux is a normal phenomenon. It typically occurs transiently after eating. Gastro esophageal reflux disease(GERD) is the condition where degree of exposure of esophageal mucosa to gastric contents is greater than normal. The most common symptom is heartburn but patients may have other symptoms. The modern concept of reflux esophagitis appears to emerge in a publication by Winkelstein in 1935 when he said: Ò One canÕt escape the suspicion that the disease in these cases is possibly a peptic esophagitis i.e. an esophagitis occurring as a result of acid and pepsinÓ. You may ask: So what is the big deal. Well folks, It really is a big deal. Did U know that according 1988 survey, more than 61 million or44% of adult Americans suffer at least once monthly. Did you know that as many as 13% of adult Americans reported taking antacids two or more times per week. As many as 7% of adult Americans have daily occurrence of heart burn. As such, you would agree with me that this disorder has potential for considerable morbidity and socio-economic consequences.

Digestive Problems Common Symptoms - Indigestion or Heartburn (Dyspepsia) Dyspepsia is the medical term which describes upper abdominal ("epigastric") discomfort which occurs after eating. It is a full feeling, often associated with nausea, presumably due to distention of the stomach, and irritation by acid. It is usually provoked or made worse by large, spicy or fatty meals. Dyspepsia usually settles spontaneously after 30 minutes to an hour, but can be relieved in most cases by taking some form of "antacid" medicine. Many people have some dyspepsia or indigestion from time to time, particularly when eating (or drinking) unwisely. However, recurrent or increasing dyspepsia can be a sign of serious disease, and warrants investigation, especially if it is associated with other worrying symptoms such as weight loss, reduced appetite, or vomiting

Heartburn is not just caused by lager and curry - but also our genes, say researchers.
Scientists have examined the condition which causes heartburn, known as acid reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). The condition has been linked to unhealthy living and a poor diet. But they found that our genes play a significant role in determining the likelihood of developing the condition - one of the most common digestive disorders in the developed world. RISK FACTORS FOR HEARTBURN Pregnancy Smoking Eating large meals Being overweight Bending a lot Wearing tight clothing around the waist It is thought that up to 20% of the population have symptoms of the condition every week. The condition is caused by small amounts of acid from the stomach rising up into the gullet. The gullet, unlike the stomach, does not have a protective lining. So when it is exposed to the acid, it can become inflamed and painful - leading to the sensation we call heartburn.

What happens when you have heartburn? There's a muscle at the top of your stomach called the lower esophageal sphincter . A sphincter is a circular muscle that opens and closes like a door. Your esophageal sphincter opens to let food into your stomach. A weak sphincter allows food and acid from your stomach back up into your esophagus. The acid causes a burning sensation called heartburn.
