Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Beating holiday heartburn
Dr Sanjay Gupta says his personal hot dog eating record is roughly 25 over a five year period. (CNN) The Fourth of July can be fraught with pitfalls like dangerous fireworks, boating injuries and good old fashioned heartburn. With the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest in mind, CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta considered this burning question and talked Thursday with CNN anchor Leon Harris about loading up your plate without loading down your stomach. GUPTA: Heartburn the name is sort of a misnomer. It actually, obviously has nothing to do with your heart. A lot of people used to confuse that sort of pain with chest pain from heart pain, and really [they are] two totally different things. Obviously, it's an acid that actually comes from your stomach, bubbles up into the esophagus, and causes an indigestion-type pain. Why does that occur? Usually because people eat a lot of food, and sort of keep the things open between the esophagus and the stomach, and that allows acid to pop back up.

- Heartburn (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-GERD) is a sensation of warmth or burning located in the chest or high in the epigastrium with radiation into the neck and occasionally to the arms.
- Occasional heartburn is common in normal persons, but frequent and severe heartburn is generally a manifestation of esophageal dysfunction. Causes of HEARTBURN
- Heartburn (GERD) is caused by the reflux of the gastric acid and intestinal contents back up the esophagus causing burning sensations, esophageal mucosal damage and in some cases, mucosal erosion (erosive esophagitis).
- Many factors may promote heartburn by reducing lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone, delaying gastric emptying, increasing acid secretion, or impairing the gastroesophageal pressure gradient. Factors that may reduce lower esophageal tone possibly causing heartburn:
- Certain beverages and foods such as alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, fatty or greasy foods, spearmint, peppermint.

Heartburn Heartburn, also called acid indigestion, is the most common symptom of GERD and usually feels like a burning chest pain beginning behind the breastbone and moving upward to the neck and throat. Many people say it feels like food is coming back into the mouth leaving an acid or bitter taste. The burning, pressure, or pain of heartburn can last as long as 2 hours and is often worse after eating. Lying down or bending over can also result in heartburn. Many people obtain relief by standing upright or by taking an antacid that clears acid out of the esophagus. Heartburn pain can be mistaken for the pain associated with heart disease or a heart attack, but there are differences. Exercise may aggravate pain resulting from heart disease, and rest may relieve the pain. Heartburn pain is less likely to be associated with physical activity. Check below for treatment options for heartburn and GERD.

Heartburn
Heartburn is a discomfort in the upper digestive tract. Symptoms of heartburn (acid indigestion) are sometimes mistaken for heart attack. Heartburn is caused by a back flow of stomach acid from the stomach into the esophagus. The stomach acid irritates the lining and causes pain. Signs and Symptoms
  • Belching and acid taste in the mouth
  • Heavy, burning or uncomfortable sensation in the chest
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Mild abdominal pain or a bloated feeling
  • Vomiting symptoms usually begin within an hour after eating
Prevention
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid overeating or over indulging in food. Obesity increases risk. Losing weight may help to decrease symptoms.
  • Reduce fat intake, spices, coffee, tea, and tomatoes. Avoid deep fried foods.
  • Don't lie down immediately after a meal. Avoid bending over or exercise immediately after eating.

BellaOnline's Heartburn Editor Heartburn and Pregnancy In this year, 4,000,000 women are expected to give birth. The majority of these women will probably experience heartburn. Heartburn usually occurs in the late stage of pregnancy. Fortunately, you don't need to be one of them.
Heartburn is very common. It often feels like burning in the heart and throat. Hormones change during pregnancy. These changes causes stomach acids to flow backwards into the esophagus. The stomach linings are sensitive and the acid hurts it.
A pregnant woman can take a calcium carbonate antacid. This can help the heartburn and even prevent it from happening. It can also provide much needed calcium.
TUMS have the highest amount of calcium. It is very important for the woman to take calcium because the baby uses the mother's to build bones and teeth. It is recommended that women of childbearing age take 1,000 to 15000 mg. of calcium a day. Nine out of ten women do not do this. The prenatal vitamins do not provide the recommended amount of calcium. Eating green leafy vegetables and taking a calcium supplement can help you get the calcium you need.

Home webGERD.com is a site dedicated to providing practical, useful, and up to date information for patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its related conditions. According to Geneva Workshop, Belgium, the term GERD should be used for individuals exposed to the risk of physical complications of reflux or in whom reflux causes significant impairment of health related well-being or QoL (Quality of Life), after adequate reassurance of the benign nature of their symptoms. Cohort studies demonstrate that symptoms of GERD occur monthly in almost 50% of U.S. adults and weekly in almost 20%.
GERD symptoms are among the most common complaints encountered by the generalist physician. They include: Acid Reflux, Heartburn, Hiatus Hernia, Indigestion, Barrett's Esophagus, Sleep apnea, Chronic Cough, Asthma, Laryngitis, Chronic Sore Throat, Hoarseness, Aspiration, Regurgitation, Chest Pain of non-cardiac origin, Difficulty Swallowing, Blood loss anemia, and Esophageal Cancer.

More than 44% of all adults in the United States (61 million people)experience this uncomfortable, burning sensation at least once a month. For most, it's an occasional occurrence that is easily relieved with an over-the-counter antacid. But for others, heartburn is a daily struggle that has changed the way they live their lives - from what they eat, to how they sleep, to the type of clothes they can wear. Severe cases of heartburn may be treated with extensive drug therapy or surgically corrected. The traditional surgical procedure, known as Nissen fundoplication, involves a large incision, a hospital stay of 6 to 10 days and a recovery period of 6 to 8 weeks. As a result, surgery has typically been limited to those patients with extreme or life-threatening conditions. Now, a laparoscopic technique makes it possible to perform the same operation in a minimally invasive manner. Most patients go home in 2 or 3 days with only 5 tiny marks and, in most cases, can return to work and other normal activities within a week.

NEW YORK, May 7, 2005
(Photo: AP / CBS)
(CBS) It's estimated that some 17 million Americans have gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. The most common symptom is heartburn.
Despite its prevalence, many people don't know much about this potentially serious condition. So The Saturday Early Show asked Dr. Mark Pochapin, director of the Jay Monahan Center At New York Presbyterian - Weill Cornell Medical Center, to tell us more about the disorder.
"GERD is basically when the juices of the stomach, which are made up of acids and digestive enzymes flow backwards into the esophagus," Pochapin explains. "The esophagus is the tube that brings food from your mouth to your stomach. The lining of the esophagus is very sensitive to these acids and enzymes, which causes it to become inflamed."
If it is not treated, this digestive disorder can lead to several serious conditions.
"Some people may develop an ulcer of the esophagus or a condition known as Barrett's esophagus," Pochapin says. "The most serious long-term damage is cancer of the esophagus, which has a low survival rate."
