Pacemakers found to help heart failure patients
A new study shows pacemakers can help some patients with heart failure By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A pacemaker device could help up to half of all heart failure patients live a more active life, researchers told the American College of Cardiology Tuesday. "The device was shown to markedly improve patient's quality of life and their functional capacity, and by functional capacity I mean that they were able to exercise longer and they were able to perform more of their activities of daily living," said lead researcher Dr. William Abraham of the University of Kentucky. Heart failure is the most rapidly growing form of heart disease in the United States. Some 5 million people have it and as many as 700,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. When medications and surgeries and procedures like angioplasty no longer work, the only other course of action has been a heart transplant. But results from a study on 500 patients indicate pacemakers may offer another treatment option.

New pacemaker may revolutionize heart treatment

Heart Failure
What is heart failure?
Heart failure occurs when the heart loses its ability to pump enough blood through the body. Usually, the loss in pumping action is a symptom of an underlying heart problem, such as coronary artery disease. The term heart failure suggests a sudden and complete stop of heart activity. But, actually, the heart does not suddenly stop. Rather, heart failure usually develops slowly, often over years, as the heart gradually loses its pumping ability and works less efficiently. Some people may not become aware of their condition until symptoms appear years after their heart began its decline. How serious the condition is depends on how much pumping capacity the heart has lost. Nearly everyone loses some pumping capacity as he or she ages. But the loss is significantly more in heart failure and often results from a heart attack or other disease that damages the heart. The severity of the condition determines the impact it has on a person's life. At one end of the spectrum, the mild form of heart failure may have little effect on a person's life; at the other end, severe heart failure can interfere with even simple activities and prove fatal. Between those extremes, treatment often helps people lead full lives.

WHAT ARE STATINS?
  • Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs introduced in the 1980s.
  • They work by blocking a substance the liver needs to manufacture cholesterol. This makes the liver cells seek out cholesterol that's already circulating in the blood.
  • Statins have been shown to reduce your LDL cholesterol ("bad cholesterol") by up to 40 percent.
Source: Mayo Clinic WASHINGTON (Reuters) Cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, which greatly reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack, may also help keep patients with heart failure alive even if they do not have high cholesterol, new research suggests. Heart failure patients who took statins were 55 percent less likely to die during the year after they were prescribed the drugs than patients who did not get them, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found.

The program aimed to improve heart failure treatment by increasing adherence to the ACC/American Heart Association (AHA) heart failure guidelines through the use of patient and clinician tools. A core objective was to increase use of chronic care management methods and evidence-based therapies. Methods Tools for Patients

Statin therapy may lower mortality in heart failure patients
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Cholesterol-lowering statin therapy may improve survival in patients with diastolic heart failure (DHF) according to a paper published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association by cardiologists at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Currently, there are no treatments shown to improve survival in these patients, who make up about 40 percent of all heart failure cases. Systolic heart failure patients have hearts that don't pump out enough blood. In DHF, the heart does not fully relax and therefore does not fill properly with blood. The mortality rate is 5 to 8 percent per year. William C. Little, M.D., head of the cardiology section at Wake Forest Baptist, and his research team found a dramatic difference in the longevity of 137 diastolic heart failure patients followed over a three-year period. The patients were being treated with ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium blockers or statins – all drugs that are commonly used to treat hypertension or heart-related conditions. "Some patients in the group had been diagnosed with high cholesterol and placed on statin therapy by their doctors. Others in the group whose cholesterol levels were not as high in general, were not placed on statins," said Little. "But when we followed the patients we found that those who had received statins did dramatically better."

    What is heart failure?
Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough oxygenated blood to meet the needs of the body's other organs. The heart keeps pumping, but not as efficiently as a healthy heart. Usually, the loss in the heart's pumping action is a symptom of an underlying heart problem.
    What causes heart failure?
Heart failure often occurs in children with congenital (present at birth) heart defects. Other medical problems that can cause heart failure include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • heart valve disease caused by past rheumatic fever or other infections infections of the heart valves and/or heart muscle (i.e., endocarditis) cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) cardiomyopathy, or another primary disease of the heart muscle

New hope for heart failure patients
Arthritis drug may slow disease progression
HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) A genetically engineered protein called Enbrel, approved last year for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, is continuing to show promise against another threat congestive heart failure. The leading cause of hospitalizations for older Americans, congestive heart failure is a progressive weakening of the heart muscle that robs the organ of its ability to pump. It affects 4.5 million people in the United States and some 400,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (CNN) Women with congestive heart failure can live twice as long as men with the same disease, according to a study released Monday. Researchers said the cause is most likely a biological difference between the sexes: Women's heart muscles respond better to some types of heart disease, such as high blood pressure. The study, reported in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, focused on patients with advanced heart failure. "What we think may be going on is there are biological differences between men and women that effect the way they respond to the heart failure state," said lead researcher Dr. Kirkwood F. Adams Jr., a professor of medicine and radiology at the University of North Carolina.

California Pacific initiated the nation’s first heart transplant service in a private institution in 1984 and has been at the forefront of disease management and transplant ever since. We were the first center in the nation to successfully place and maintain a patient on a bi-ventricular assist device (BiVAD) while waiting for a donor heart and have been a leader in developing the “bridge-to-transplantation.”
With heart disease affecting an estimated 58 million people in the U.S. alone, medical researchers continue to pursue better treatment options. To this end, California Pacific is one of 20 clinical trial sites for the MicroMed DeBakey VAD®,
