Pacemaker OK'd for heart failure
The FDA has approved this pacemaker for patients with heart failure. By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit ROCKVILLE, Maryland (CNN) A pacemaker device that could help up to half of all heart failure patients live a more active life was approved for marketing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Tuesday. The device is Medtronic's InSync Biventricular Pacing System. "The device was shown to markedly improve patient's quality of life and their functional capacity, and by functional capacity I mean that they were able to exercise longer and they were able to perform more of their activities of daily living," said Dr. William Abraham of the University of Kentucky, who conducted a major study of the device. He presented his findings at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology in March. Heart failure is the most rapidly growing form of heart disease in the United States. Some 5 million people have it and as many as 700,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Study links abnormal protein, heart's ability to pump blood
Story Tools RELATED Guidelines to heart disease prevention A new sign of heart disease risk Study: Heart after exercise test can predict death risk Science magazine WASHINGTON (AP) In a study that could lead to new treatment for congestive heart failure, researchers have shown that an abnormal form of a protein can be a fundamental cause. Earlier studies in animals had suggested that the protein phospholamban, or PLN, played a key role. Now, by studying four generations of a family in which the heart disease was common, researchers have shown that an abnormal form of the protein molecule was the primary cause. Dr. Christine E. Seidman, a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Harvard Medical School, said the abnormal PLN disrupts the calcium cycle in heart muscle and causes the heart to lose its ability to efficiently pump blood. Calcium causes heart muscles to contract and PLN then helps move the calcium away so that the muscles can relax between beats. This action, called a calcium pump, is essential for the proper beating of the heart.

Are there other surgeries that can be done for people with heart failure?

What is heart failure? The term "Heart Failure" can be scary, and is misleading. The heart does not "fail" in the sense that it suddenly stops. It doesn't mean that you're about to die. It means the heart is not working as efficiently as it should. Heart "failure"occurs when the heart muscle cannot keep up with the needs the body has for blood flow. It is not a disease itself, but is rather a "syndrome" (a syndrome is a collection of findings which may arise from a number of causes). Most often, it is caused by weakening of the heart muscle ("cardiomyopathy"), leaving it unable to pump enough blood. It is termed "congestive" heart failure (commonly referred to as "CHF") because fluids typically build up in the body, which is then said to be congested. In addition to heart failure caused from a weakened heart, there are two other major varieties of heart failure. These are CHF secondary to thick "muscle-bound" hearts (this is termed "diastolic dysfunction"), and CHF due to the body having needs which are too high for even a normal heart to keep up with. This occurs, for example in some cases of thyroid disease in which too much thyroid hormone is produced, in persons with anemia, or several other conditions.

EECP for Heart Failure
EECP (enhanced external counterpulsation) is a novel, non-invasive means of effectively treating angina that cardiologists just don't want to hear about. A new clinical trial suggests that EECP may also offer some benefit to patients with heart failure - but the evidence is equivocal, and probably won't change the minds of most cardiologists. Congestive Heart Failure
What is congestive heart failure?
The heart is a muscle that acts as an automatic pump to circulate blood throughout the body. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart's function as a pump is inadequate to meet the body's needs. A poor blood supply resulting from CHF may cause the body's organ systems to fail. When the heart's pumping action is inadequate as a result of CHF, the blood "backs up" (becomes congested) behind the heart. This congestion can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs and body tissues. CHF is a grouping of clinical findings rather than a specific diagnosis or a single disease. CHF can be considered a symptom of impairment of the pumping action of the heart that is caused by an underlying disease. CHF can be broadly divided into categories depending on the underlying heart condition present. The strength (forward pumping function) of the heart may be impaired (so called systolic dysfunction) due to illnesses that cause heart muscle weakness or the ability of the heart to relax and fill may be impaired. Additionally, in some cases, although the pumping action of the heart may be intact, other factors due to abnormal demands by the body's tissues may make it difficult for the heart to supply an adequate blood flow (called high output heart failure).

I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma until 1981 when my mom and myself moved to Scio, Oregon. I attended schools in Scio and Salem until high school, when we moved to Newport, OR. I attended Newport High School until the end of my sophomore year when I moved to Corvallis. I played basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer throughout junior high and high school. I really enjoyed athletics. I also played in the band all throughout school. I graduated in June 1990. I truly miss all the friends I made while living in Oregon. In July 1994, I moved back to Oklahoma City. In January 1995, I enrolled in the psychology degree program at Oklahoma City Community College. It turned out to be a major life-changing event. I learned many things, especially about myself, and met some great people. I enjoyed college. However, the last 8 months of my degree were difficult. I received my Associate of Arts in May 1998.

Heart failure is a condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood throughout the body. Heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped or is about to stop working. It means that your heart is not able to pump blood the way that it should. The heart cannot fill with enough blood or pump with enough force or both. Go to the section on How the Heart Works for details.
Heart failure develops over time as the pumping action of the heart grows weaker. It can affect the left side, the right side, or both sides of the heart. Most cases involve the left side where the heart cannot pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. With right-sided failure, the heart cannot effectively pump blood to the lungs where the blood picks up oxygen.
The weakening of the pumping ability of the heart causes:
  • Blood and fluid to "back up" into the lungs
  • The buildup of fluid in the feet, ankles, and legs
  • Tiredness and shortness of breath
Heart failure is a serious condition. About 5 million people in the U. S. have heart failure and the number is growing. Each year, another 550,000 people are diagnosed for the first time. It contributes to or causes about 300,000 deaths each year.

Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a syndrome of progressive decrease in cardiac function and inability of the heart to pump sufficient blood for proper function of the lungs, kidneys, and other vital organs and tissues. Symptoms include decreasing activity, shortness of breath, and peripheral and pulmonary edema. There are a total of approximately 9 million people in the U.S. and Europe with CHF. Currently, only approximately 50% of patients diagnosed with CHF survive for five years, and only 50% of patients with class IV CHF survive one year. New treatments for CHF are greatly needed to improve symptoms, enhance cardiac function, and avoid dangerous and progressive complications of CHF.
The Role of Thyroid Hormone
Thyroid hormone is an important regulator of the heart and blood vessels, and adequate levels of thyroid hormone are essential for proper function of the cardiovascular system. Thyroid hormone improves the ability of the heart to fill properly (improves diastolic function), reduces the pressure against which the heart pumps by relaxing small blood vessels (reduces peripheral vascular resistance), and improves the efficiency of contraction of the heart so that a greater amount of blood is pumped per contraction (improved systolic function).
Researchers have demonstrated that approximately 30% of patients with advanced (NYHA Class III and IV) CHF have abnormally low levels of T
