The Facts: Women and Heart Disease
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women, accounting for 32 percent of all deaths per year. Nearly 366,000 women in America die every year of heart disease. 8 million American women are currently living with heart disease and of those, 6 million have a family history of heart disease. Fewer than half of all women are aware that heart disease is the number 1 killer of American women. Most women identify cancer as the leading cause of death. In the United States, all cardiovascular diseases combined claim the lives of more women's every year than the next 16 causes of death combined and almost twice as many as all forms of cancer. One in three women will die from heart disease, while one in 25 women die from breast cancer. Every year since 1984, more women than men have died of cardiovascular disease. There is no previous evidence of coronary heart disease in 63 percent of the women who suddenly die from the disease. Smoking is the most prevalent and preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women younger than 45.

Data Reveals Diseased Gums Pump High Levels of Harmful Bacterial Components Into Bloodstream
CHICAGO – February 7, 2002 – A newly published study in the Journal of Periodontology confirms recent findings that people with periodontal disease are at a greater risk of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease Study Abstract * Researchers found diseased gums released significantly higher levels of bacterial pro-inflammatory components, such as endotoxins, into the bloodstream in patients with severe periodontal disease compared to healthy patients. As a result, these harmful bacterial components in the blood could travel to other organs in the body, such as the heart, and cause harm.

Cellular Therapy: Potential Treatment for Heart Disease
Introduction
As novel cellular therapies move from laboratory findings to clinical practice, medical researchers and regulators face new issues and uncertainties involving long-term safety and efficacy. Currently, there are no effective drug therapies for many acquired and congenital diseases. Recent discoveries in cellular therapy research present new opportunities for cellular products to be used in disease areas with critical, unmet medical needs. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates cellular therapies to ensure that they are safe and effective, and that persons enrolled in clinical trials using cellular products are protected from undue risk. Cellular products hold great potential for use in treating damaged or diseased tissues of the body. Cellular products come from a variety of sources, such as stem cells from bone marrow and peripheral blood, and myoblasts from skeletal muscle cells. There is still much to learn about how cellular products work, how to administer them safely, and whether, over time, the cells will continue to work properly in the body without harmful side effects. FDA is committed to supporting cellular therapy research and development, and future licensure of cellular products, and wants the public to understand both the promise and the challenges presented by this exciting new therapy.

Contact Us Content Heart Disease Alternative Heart Disease Treatment Heart Disease Coronary Heart Disease Facts About Coronary Heart Disease From National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Coronary heart disease is the most common form of heart disease, the leading cause of death for Americans. About 12.6 million Americans suffer from Coronary Heart Disease, which often results in a heart attack. About 1.1 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year—about 515,000 of these heart attacks are fatal.
Fortunately, Coronary Heart Disease can be prevented or controlled. This fact sheet gives an overview of Coronary Heart Disease and its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. It describes the steps that Americans can take to protect their heart health. What Is Coronary Heart Disease?
The heart is a muscle that works 24 hours a day. To perform well, it needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which is delivered by the blood through the coronary arteries.
That blood flow can be reduced by a process called atherosclerosis, in which plaques or fatty substances build up inside the walls of blood vessels. The plaques attract blood components, which stick to the inside surface of the vessel walls. Atherosclerosis can affect any blood vessels and causes them to narrow and harden. It develops over many years and can begin early, even in childhood.

Introduction
Ischaemic Heart Disease (IHD), otherwise known as Coronary Artery Disease, is a condition that affects the supply of blood to the heart. The blood vessels are narrowed or blocked due to the deposition of cholesterol plaques on their walls. This reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart musculature, which is essential for proper functioning of the heart. This may eventually result in a portion of the heart being suddenly deprived of its blood supply leading to the death of that area of heart tissue, resulting in a heart attack. As the heart is the pump that supplies oxygenated blood to the various vital organs, any defect in the heart immediately affects the supply of oxygen to the vital organs like the brain, kidneys etc. This leads to the death of tissue within these organs and their eventual failure or death. Ischaemic Heart Disease is the most common cause of death in several countries around the world.

Spit tobacco lifts risk of heart disease, stroke
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 From local dispatches
Men who use spit (either snuff or chewing) tobacco have a higher risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and all causes combined compared to non-users, two large prospective studies from the American Cancer Society find. A prospective study follows a group of healthy people over time to gauge consequences of certain behaviors. The studies are the largest to date on the subject and challenge the claim that smokeless tobacco might be an acceptable alternative to smoking. Surveys show more than 7.7 million Americans used spit tobacco in 2003, with about four percent of middle school students and seven percent of high school students reporting spit tobacco use. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in seven male high school students use spit tobacco as a direct result of marketing to gets kids hooked via "starter" packs with less nicotine and flavorings like mint and cherry. "These studies point to a significant potential danger of spit tobacco," said Dr. Michael J. Thun, the society's head of epidemiology and co-author of the report.
