The Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke Overview An estimated 17 million people die of CVDs, particularly heart attacks and strokes, every year. A substantial number of these deaths can be attributed to tobacco smoking, which increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease 2–3 fold. Physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are other main risk factors which increase individual risks to cardiovascular diseases. One of the strategies to respond to the challenges to population health and well being due to the global epidemic of heart attack and stroke is to provide actionable information for development and implementation of appropriate policies. As part of such efforts, WHO in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has produced for the wider audience, "The Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke". The atlas addresses the global epidemic of heart disease and stroke in a clear and accessible format. This highly valuable reference material has been designed for use by policy makers, national and international organizations, health professionals and the general public. This picturesque atlas is in six parts: cardiovascular disease; risk factors; the burden; action; the future and the past; and world tables.

National Heart Foundation AHAF's National Heart Foundation (NHF) program was established in 1976 to fund research on and educate the public about heart disease and stroke. Coronary Heart Disease: The narrowing of the coronary arteries due to the accumulation of plaque causes coronary heart disease (CHD). The narrowing and blockage of the arteries by plaque is called atherosclerosis. Coronary heart disease is the single greatest cause of death for both men and women in the United States, eclipsing all other causes, including cancer and lung diseases. Heart Failure: When the heart loses the ability to pump enough blood through the body, heart failure occurs. The seriousness of the condition depends on how much of the pumping capacity has been lost. Mild heart failure may have little effect on one's life, while severe heart failure interferes with even simple activities and can often prove fatal. It is a major chronic condition in the United States. Stroke: When brain cells are deprived of their blood supply, a stroke or "brain attack" occurs. Without access to vital nutrients and oxygen, brain cells die. 80% of strokes occur from a blocked blood vessel in the neck or brain, while the remainder result from a weakened blood vessel in the brain that bursts and bleeds into the surrounding tissue. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the primary cause of disabilities in adults. People over age 65 experience almost three fourths of all strokes.

Coronary heart disease
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Coronary heart disease
Coronary heart disease
(CHD), also called coronary artery disease (CAD) and atherosclerotic heart disease, is the end result of the accumulation of atheromatous plaques within the walls of the arteries that supply the myocardium (the muscle of the heart ). While the symptoms and signs of coronary heart disease are noted in the advanced state of disease, most individuals with coronary heart disease would have evidence of disease decades before the first symptoms arise. After decades of progression, some of these atheromatous plaques may rupture and (along with the activation of the blood clotting system) start limiting blood flow to the heart muscle . Current views are that an inflammatory process of the lining of the arteries, though poorly understood in specifics, promotes the disease progression.
